Chapter 2

作者: Stars
On the drive to the altar, my best friend raged the entire way.

"What kind of mate is he? It's your engagement ceremony! Letting Yvette steal the spotlight was bad enough, but then he just dumps you and runs off after her?"

"You have never had to put up with this kind of crap."

"No. I'm turning around. I'm dragging him back."

I caught her arm before she could. "Leave it. Even if you bring him back, his heart's somewhere else."

She looked like she was about to cry. "You haven't even had the mating ceremony yet and he's already treating you like this. If you actually spend your life with him—"

"I won't," I said quietly. "I'd never spend my life with a man like that."

A memory from eight years ago rose up to meet me.

I'd agreed to the alliance back then. The first time we met, he'd held my hand and said: "I don't expect you to accept me right now. Just give me some time. Let me prove I love you."

"If you still don't love me a year from now, I'll call off the alliance myself."

After that came the expensive gifts. The trips to places I'd always wanted to see. Care so attentive it made me dizzy.

Slowly, I fell for him. Genuinely. I wanted to build a happy home with that man.

Later I found out the truth. Everything he'd done had been about one thing—using my pack's power to secure his claim as Alpha heir.

I let it go. No point dwelling on it.

The car stopped at the foot of the altar. The Moon Goddess stood carved in stone at its center.

I'd come here once before. Years ago. My head had been full of Xavier, and the wish I'd made was to walk the rest of my life hand in hand with him.

What a joke that was now.

I stepped up to the statue, closed my eyes, and pressed my palms together.

Moon Goddess, hear me. From today, Claire belongs only to herself. She will not love Xavier again. She will not cry over any man again.

I opened my eyes and saw them.

Two figures coming up the path—Xavier leading Yvette by the hand.

My friend looked ready to tear him apart.

He didn't notice. He just launched into his little speech. "Yvette talked me into it. You're right, it wasn't fair to make you come alone to pray at our engagement ceremony. So I've made time to come be with you."

"Also, I want you to see Yvette like this. See her properly. She's not plain—she just hasn't had the money to present herself. With a little effort, she's just as good as any of you."

Yvette stood there in a couture gown so weighed down with jewelry it hurt my eyes. But her small frame couldn't carry any of it. The most expensive pieces in the world looked cheap draped on her.

My friend snorted and rolled her eyes, already opening her mouth. I stopped her.

"You're right. It's lovely. The dress suits her."

Xavier swelled. "Of course. I picked it out myself."

Yvette blushed, reached up to touch her neck—and let out a cry.

"Oh—my necklace. It's gone."

Xavier waved it off. "It's just a necklace. Nothing worth getting upset over. I'll buy you a prettier one."

She pouted, voice small. "But I have to meet your friends later. Without the necklace, the whole outfit looks incomplete."

He couldn't stand to see her upset. That's when his eyes found my throat.

"Claire. Yvette needs a necklace to complete the look. Give her yours and I'll forget everything you've pulled tonight."

I froze. My hand drifted up to the pendant at my collarbone.

It had been a gift from Xavier's father. The Luna heirloom. Every Luna in the pack had worn it. Only the Luna was entitled to wear it.

When his father had given it to me, I'd been almost too overwhelmed to accept it.

"Xavier is the Alpha heir," he'd insisted. "You are the future Luna. This is going to be yours anyway. Wear it."

"You seriously want me to give this to Yvette?" I asked, looking Xavier dead in the eye.

"It's just a necklace. You've got a dozen. What's one to Yvette? Don't forget, you're going to be the Luna. Don't be petty."

He stepped toward me, reaching to unclasp it himself.

I blocked his hand. "Don't touch me. I'll take it off myself."

I reached back, unhooked the clasp, and fastened it around Yvette's neck with my own hands.

I stepped back. Looked her over. Smiled.

"You're right. It suits you better than it ever did me."

I never heard from him again after that. His pack, though—their financial troubles kept hitting the news.Without our funding, the pack had no real income. And the cheating scandal had destroyed any reputation they had left. No other pack would deal with them. They decayed, one day at a time. It was only a matter of time before a stronger pack swallowed them whole. Some time later, over coffee with my best friend, I heard that name again."Claire. Do you remember Xavier?"It had been years. He'd faded in my memory."Vaguely. Why?"She leaned in, clearly enjoying herself. "You want to hear what happened to him?""After you dumped him, he and Yvette went through with the mating ceremony. They've been scraping by in some dark, damp rental.""It was okay at first. Then Xavier started drinking. Every night. Hit the bars, picked up a bar hostess."I took an unhurried sip of my coffee. I wasn't especially surprised."And?""By then Yvette was pregnant. She found out about the hostess and lost

Xavier hadn't believed his father would actually do it.It hit him all at once—how serious this was."No—no, I didn't mean it. I was upset. Please, don't throw me out."His father didn't look at him.Xavier broke. He turned. Looked at me. Dropped to his knees. The thud of them hitting the floor was loud in the quiet hall."Claire. I know now. I was weak, I gave in to temptation, I wronged you. But it didn't mean anything. Every man slips up at some point. Please. One more chance."I shook my head. "You don't know you were wrong. You just know you're finished.""I'm not forgiving you. Don't hold out hope."The last light in his eyes went out. He turned to my father."Sir—our packs have been allied for generations. Even if not for me, for the sake of both packs—you can't cancel this alliance."My father didn't soften. Instead he made the thing bigger."Centuries ago, this alliance existed to maintain cooperation. And cooperation means mutual benefit. What you've been doing is taking from

Xavier's father turned on him. "Xavier. Explain. Is everything Claire said true? Did you cheat?"Xavier mumbled. Couldn't get a sentence out.His mother grabbed his arm. "Speak. What happened?"Every eye in the hall was on him, waiting. He dropped his head. His voice shook. "I—I didn't know. I thought it was just a regular necklace. I gave it to Yvette."His father jabbed a finger at him. "You—do you know what that necklace means? How could you just give it away?""I only gave her a necklace," he shot back. "That's all. You can call me ignorant for not knowing what it stood for. But that doesn't prove I cheated."Watching him squirm, I felt nothing but pity and disgust."A necklace proves nothing. Fair. Photos, though—those are different."The screen behind me lit up.A second later, a photo of him and Yvette filled the wall. The two of them tangled up in bed. Yvette in a lace nightgown, draped against his shoulder. Marks trailing from her neck down to her chest. There were more. I'd l

Xavier's face changed. He knew exactly what he'd done. But he set his jaw and doubled down."What—what did I do to Claire? All I did was work late a few nights before the ceremony. That's it."His father turned on me. "You're calling off the alliance over that? Xavier's the Alpha heir. He's going to run this pack one day. He can't orbit you every minute. As the future Luna, you should understand."I walked toward Xavier. One step at a time."You were really 'working late'? All those nights?"His eyes flickered. He held the line anyway. He hadn't been anywhere but at work."I swear on my position as Alpha heir. I've never done anything to betray you."So he wanted to dig in. Fine. I stopped trying to coax it out of him.I turned. Every eye in the room followed me.I looked straight at Yvette. And the spotlights, as though answering, slid down my line of sight and landed squarely on her.She flinched against the glare. My voice was low and even. "Xavier. This 'working late'—was it at a h

"I won't go through with the mating ceremony. Because I know—you and Yvette are the ones made for each other. I wish you both the best."The words dropped like a bomb. Everyone but my parents froze.Xavier's smile was still stuck to his face. He stared at me like he didn't recognize the language I was speaking. The room went cold. Then he shot to his feet. "Claire! What do you think you're doing? Is this really the time for you to lose it?"I looked him straight in the eye. "Whether I've lost it or not, you know better than anyone."I'd once believed Xavier was the most important person in my life. Now I understood—he was just a passing stranger. A footnote in a long life. The lovesick filter was gone. And without it, he was painfully ordinary. The deadlock stretched. His mother stepped in to smooth things over."Claire, honey—whatever Xavier did to upset you, this isn't the place to joke about it. Please. Just get through the ceremony, and I promise we'll deal with him. We'll make him

The night before the mating ceremony, Xavier finally came home, reeking of alcohol. The second he walked in, he wrapped himself around me from behind and started rubbing his face against mine. The thought of him kissing another woman made me sick. I shoved him off. He came back, shameless, arms around me again.Mumbling into my neck. "Claire. I missed you.""I'm sorry, baby. Pack business has been crazy these past few days. I haven't had a minute. You are not mad at me, are you?"Yvette's Twitter was lit up with photos of the two of them. Only an idiot would've believed him.I didn't call him on it. Just made a cold sound in the back of my throat. He took that as encouragement. His grin widened. He leaned in to kiss me.My jaw tightened—and before I knew it, my hand came up and cracked across his face. The slap echoed. He sobered up fast.He stared at me, stunned, one hand to his cheek. "Claire, what the hell?"I shook out my stinging palm. "Nothing. It's late. Get some sleep."I walke
