Chapter 4

作者: Gwen
After waiting for a while, the news finally arrived that the patient’s condition had stabilized.

The very next second after I woke up, Elijah threw a document hard into my face. The sharp edge instantly cut my cheek, but before I could even react, a furious roar exploded in my ears.

“I can’t believe you conspired with the doctors to forge your condition, all just to avoid donating your bone marrow to Chloe! Open your eyes and look at this physical report! Just how many times are you going to lie to us over and over again!”

Enduring the agonizing pain racking my body, I forced myself up with all my remaining strength to pick up the report.

If Elijah had bothered to take even one proper look at it, he would have realized it was riddled with flaws. Even my weight on the report was what I had weighed three years ago. I had been so ravaged by medication over the past three years that I was dangerously emaciated. Yet, he still chose to believe it anyway.

Cold sweat drenched my forehead from the intense pain. It took everything I had to tell him the truth.

“This report… It’s forged.”

Before I could finish what I wanted to say, Tyler barged into the hospital room and dragged me off the bed. The IV needles and various monitoring wires were ripped out of me.

“All I asked was for you to donate your bone marrow, and that was to save Chloe’s life. Why do you refuse to give her a chance to live?”

His eyes were bloodshot. “I didn’t want to hurt you, but you… Nora, don’t blame me for what I’m about to do.”

I shook my head frantically, begging for mercy, sobbing that I would be good from now on. However, he ignored my pleas and ordered the bodyguards to drag me toward the car.

As my legs dangled out of the doorway, he brought his foot down on mine, and the very legs that had danced for sixteen years snapped just like that. My piercing, agonizing screams were instantly muffled by a bodyguard’s hand clamped tightly over my mouth.

“You’re full of lies, and I can’t gamble with Chloe’s life.”

The car sped toward the estate where they had locked me away for three years, and I was thrown straight into the basement. To my surprise, it wasn’t long before the door was pushed open and Chloe walked in.

Tyler and Elijah escorted her, flanking her on either side.

“Chloe is kind-hearted. She said she wanted to come and check on you.”

“You'd best behave yourself. If you dare say anything out of line to trigger her, you can say goodbye to your tongue.”

As the heavy door slowly shut behind her, the fragile, weak look on Chloe’s face instantly vanished. She leaned right next to my ear and let out a soft laugh.

“The great heiress of the Benson family amounts to nothing more than this! Since you’re about to die anyway, I’ll give you some peace of mind. The truth is, I’m not sick at all. And I don’t give a damn about Tyler or Elijah. I just wanted to fake my death and take the money to live a lavish life abroad. But then you had to come along and show up as a perfect bone marrow match. Perfect. I’ll just use this opportunity to play the game with you a little longer.”

My eyes widened in sheer shock. Before I could utter a word, she drew a paring knife from her coat and stabbed it into her own abdomen.

“Help! Nora is trying to kill me!”

Hearing the commotion, Tyler and Elijah rushed back inside. Seeing Chloe collapsed in a pool of blood, they both lost their minds.

The accompanying doctor scrambled forward to examine her.

“The wound is too deep and has triggered organ damage! We must operate immediately, or it’ll be too late to save her!”

“Then what the hell are you standing around for? Get her to the hospital right now!” Elijah roared, his eyes bloodshot, as Tyler scooped Chloe into his arms and dashed out like a madman.

They hadn’t made it very far before Elijah suddenly remembered something.

“Where is Nora? Bring her out, too! We are doing the bone marrow transplant for Chloe today!”

The bodyguard nodded quickly to comply. However, before Elijah could even step back into the estate, a deafening explosion shattered the air.

Elijah’s eyes were wide with horror as a roaring wall of fire instantly swallowed the entire building.

Elijah bounced right up from the floor.“What did you just call her?”I took over the conversation. “Let me introduce you. This is my husband, Julian Grey.”“Julian? You’re the one from the black market back then…”“Yes, that was me. I happened to be right there when you dumped her into that hellhole.”He walked over to my side, dropped to one knee, and gently took my hand in his.“Nora saved my life in the black market. She gave me the half loaf of bread she had hidden on her, and because she helped me, the guards in the black market tortured her twice as hard.”Elijah’s face drained of all color.“Do you even know why she was thrown into the black market in the first place? It was because Chloe claimed that Nora had hired people to teach her a lesson.” Julian paused for a moment before continuing, “But did you ever stop to think, how could Nora have ever hired anyone to beat someone up? She didn’t even know how to swear at people.”I smiled softly at him, then turned my atte

Elijah was taken aback. “So… so you should know that I didn’t mean to hurt you. I thought–”“You thought you were avenging me? Do you honestly think doing this wipes away what you all did to me?”Elijah’s voice shook. “Nora, I just wanted to make her pay for what she did.”“The law will make her pay, not by keeping her locked up in a basement like you are doing right now. You think doing this is sticking up for me? You think this is love? Tell me, how is what you’re doing any different from when you threw me into the black market all those years ago?”Tyler snapped his head up. “Nora! This is different! We’re getting revenge for you!”“It is the same.” Nora stared dead into his eyes as she said, “You threw me into the black market all those years ago because you believed Chloe’s lies and thought you were getting justice for her. Now, you have locked Chloe in a basement because you found out the truth and think you are getting justice for me. But it never once crossed your mind: wh

Three years passed in the blink of an eye. The name Nora became an absolute taboo within both the Benson and the York families.Aside from throwing himself entirely into his work, Elijah spent every waking hour guarding the newly rebuilt estate. Tyler, on the other hand, donated the vast majority of his fortune to various charitable organizations. He spent his days in total silence, stripped of the high-spirited pride he once possessed. That was until today, in the top-floor conference room of York Group’s headquarters, a newly hired project manager flipped through his documents while delivering a presentation. “For this upcoming children’s charity dance project, our partner organization is based overseas. Our primary point of contact is the industry’s top choreographer, Ms. Nora Benson.”As soon as the words left his mouth, the entire conference room fell into a dead silence. The veteran employees instinctively lowered their heads, bracing themselves for Elijah’s inevitable rage

The room fell silent. After what felt like an eternity, Elijah spoke up, his voice hoarse. “So… you were the one behind all of it?”Chloe threw her head back and admitted, “Yes, it was all me. I just wanted her to taste what it felt like to be trampled under someone else’s feet.”As she laughed, tears started streaming down her face again.“But what was the point of beating her to it? You bunch of absolute idiots are still thinking about her! I stayed by your side for so many years and played my part. Did any of you, for even a single moment, actually treat me like a real human being?”Tyler slowly crouched down and stared directly into her eyes. “So that’s why you orchestrated this entire nightmare? Chloe, do you have any idea how I felt when I discovered all of that evidence?”Suddenly, Chloe grew calm. “I do, but so what? She’s dead, and you will never find her again. As for you two, you get to live with this suffocating guilt for the rest of your miserable lives.”Elijah wav

Something snapped inside Elijah’s mind. He strode forward and clamped his hands around Chloe’s throat. Gripping her neck, he slammed her hard against the wall, pinning her there until her entire face turned a suffocating shade of red and purple.“E-Elijah? Why are you–”“Why am I here, you ask? That is exactly the question I should be asking you! Aren’t you supposed to be dead? Why aren’t you lying in the hospital morgue right now?”The man standing next to Chloe was so terrified that his legs turned to jelly. Sensing an opportunity while Elijah was distracted, he tried to slip away and escape, but one of the closely following bodyguards immediately kicked him to the ground.Elijah sounded like a demon straight out of the depths of hell. “Speak! What the hell is going on here?”Chloe trembled violently, with tears streaming down her face. “Elijah, you’re hurting me… You look so terrifying right now. Please don’t scare me like this, okay?”“Scared? You didn’t seem the slightest bi

Elijah ripped the items out of the young nurse’s hands. The brown paper bag tore open, and a phone, along with a thick stack of documents, spilled onto the floor. The phone’s screen lit up, displaying endless rows of chat logs and audio recordings. Inside were conversations between Chloe and the thugs from years ago, paired with the bank transfer records. There were even messages showing how she had bribed doctors to forge her depression diagnosis, along with a few voice notes she had sent to her friends.“Those idiots in the Benson family… All it took was a few tears from me, and now they see their daughter as an enemy.”At the very bottom of the pile was a medical evaluation report from the hospital. It stated in black and white that Chloe’s hematopoietic function was completely normal. She had never suffered from leukemia. The so-called bone marrow match was nothing more than a scam she had orchestrated by bribing the laboratory staff.Elijah’s hands shook uncontrollably. After
