Chapter 4

Author: Ivy Rue
I hid in the pile of junk, peeking through the gaps at the shadowy figure standing before me. My whole body was trembling. Fortunately, the killer only paused for a moment before continuing down the stairs.

"Wow, she's smart, hiding in such a disgusting pile of filth. The killer would never have guessed a clean lady like her would be there."

"Guys. I'm starting to hate the idea of her dying."

I didn't have time to care about the comments. I quickly opened my phone and scanned my WhatsApp contacts for anyone who could be the hero.

My contact list was short. After a quick check, I narrowed it down to two people who fit the description. The first was Joseph Finch, my classmate, and the second was Paul Waechter, the grandson of the building's janitor.

I froze. They were both strangers to me!

I quickly typed out a message asking for help and sent it to both of them. According to the comments, the hero had set a special notification ringtone for me. Whoever replied fastest would be him.

Soon, my phone vibrated. It was Joseph.

"Stay where you are and don't go anywhere! I'm coming to find you!"

The next second, Paul also responded. "Get out of there right now! That man is highly intelligent, and your location is no longer safe. Run!"

Joseph and Paul replied almost simultaneously, but their messages pointed me in completely different directions. Which of them was the hero?

I looked up, hoping to see some hints from the comments, but there was nothing. Just as I hesitated, a new set of hurried footsteps echoed through the stairwell.

Was Joseph coming for me? No, it couldn't be. He lived on the top floor of the building, while these footsteps were clearly coming from below. It was the killer—he had to be back!

The steps drew closer by the second, and my heart slammed wildly against my chest. I wasn't close to either Joseph or Paul, so I had no way of telling which one was the brilliant protagonist.

Just then, the live comments returned.

"Oh my gosh! The heroine is asking the hero for help!"

"But why did she ask two people at once? Who's that other dude?"

"She's saved! Our hero is coming!"

"Are we about to see his handsome face? I love seeing him and the heroine together!"

I caught yet another key detail. The hero was supposedly handsome.

I recalled carefully. Joseph was indeed attractive. When we first started university, he had even been voted the campus heartthrob.

Meanwhile, I had never seen Paul as an adult. His grandfather, however… Well, chances were, he probably didn’t stand out in looks either.

Therefore, the hero had to be Joseph. I decided to trust him and stayed hidden, holding my ground.

When the footsteps finally stopped in front of me, my heart clenched in terror. "Stephanie Moore? Are you in there?"

It was Joseph!

I pulled away the reeking pile of junk covering me, and my eyes met his handsome face. He was panting, carrying a large bag as if he had just returned from outside. No wonder the footsteps sounded like they had come from below, even though he lived on the top floor.

"Sorry, Stephanie. I just went out for a late-night snack. I hope I'm not too late," he said, still gasping for air.

Before he could continue, I suddenly realized something was off. Soon, I remembered the discrepancy.

The comments had indicated that, although the hero lived in the same building as me, he would've been home, sleeping, when the incident started. Joseph, on the other hand, had just returned from outside…

A chill shot straight from the soles of my feet to the top of my head. The next second, I heard the faint clicking of footsteps again.

This time, the live comments were completely different from the previous life, when he appeared as the heroic protagonist."Help. He's so ugly. What the hell.""Ew… I'm logging off to throw up.""Hey, whose pet pig is this?"…From the moment I called Mom, and she told me my birthday, I was certain this world wasn't real.On the phone, she said I was born on June 18th, 2000. That was indeed the birthday listed on my ID, but when I was little, due to a mistake by the local government office, my birthday had been recorded a day early. In other words, my real birthday was June 19th.Over the years, even I would sometimes grow unsure, but Mom was the one person who could never forget my true birthday. And yet, in this false world centered around Paul, everything existed only as his memories shaped it.The woman I called on the phone wasn't my real mom. Whether as a killer or as a hero, Paul was nothing more than a character he had imagined. All of them were merely projections of h

From what I remembered of my previous lives, going to Paul hadn't actually been a mistake. At the very least, his plot armor had kept me alive for one whole night.Still, I knew that if I truly wanted to survive, I would have to stay with him every single moment. The instant I stepped away, the killer would turn the tables and strike me down. I refused to live like that.I stood in front of my door, staring at the blurry mass of darkness outside the narrow crack. The bastard who had killed me four times was standing right there.I frowned and thought for a few seconds before an idea struck. I hurriedly made a call to my mom. I didn't ask for help. I simply asked a question—the date of my birthday. After getting the answer, I hung up. When I looked at the shadow outside the door again, my mind had finally made its decision. To hell with it.This time, I wouldn't run anymore. I would face him alone—and fight back.I rushed back into my room and flung open the cabinet, rummaging thr

However, that was all I knew about Paul.I waited for a long time. There was almost no sound outside. Even so, my heart stayed tightly clenched. I couldn't relax for a second. Nervous, I paced around the cramped space.Without warning, I noticed a small corner hidden in the shadows. The walls there were covered with photos. They were all of me at different times. Some of them were ones I didn't even remember anything about.Beside them was a sheet of paper filled with my personal information and hobbies. "Stephanie Moore, born on June 18th, 2000. Likes dancing and being in a fandom…"A sense of unease crept over me. Then, as if on cue, the comments returned in waves."Holy crap. His one-sided love is seriously unhinged. Dark, but I love it.""Oh my gosh. He's been secretly keeping so many photos of her and writing down all her preferences. That's true love.""What a touching story. I think she's about to fall for him. Look at her! She's obviously moved!"I was more than confuse

"I like how the hero is forced to show up early in the story. Does that mean the heroine might escape her fate this time?""No idea. Let's see."…Maybe the live comments were hyping Paul up a little too much, but I was starting to feel a little excited as I waited outside his door. I wanted to see just what kind of man could become the protagonist of a novel. When the door opened, I was shocked to the core. I tried to confirm by asking, "Are you… Paul Waechter?"The man glanced cautiously around the hallway, then quickly pulled me into the apartment. "Get in first."Even after the door closed behind me, I couldn't register what was happening. Never mind a hot guy—the man before me was below average in terms of looks. He was stocky and heavyset, with a round, greasy face. When he spoke, a strong, unpleasant odor came from his mouth. I was completely dumbfounded. The live comments made me question reality all over again."Oh my gosh, there he is! He's so hot!""He's so handsom

Maybe it was my nerves making me extra cautious, but I knocked lightly, keeping an eye on my surroundings. The door opened quickly anyway, and a retired SWAT officer with a stern face appeared before me.I marveled at how sensitive his ears still were, then hurriedly explained my situation. The retired officer immediately let me inside and carefully closed the door behind us.Paul texted that he had called the police and was on his way to Unit 502.In the last two attempts, I had considered calling the police myself, but time had never allowed it. Besides, I already knew this world was part of a novel, on a story centered around Paul, so calling the police wouldn't have mattered as much as letting him handle it.Just as I began to finally relax, I heard two soft knocks at the door. "Food delivery's here!"My heart skipped a beat. I looked up, ready to stop him, but the retired officer had quietly moved to the door, his hand on the handle. Muttering to himself, he said, "Huh… I don

Suddenly, slow but deliberate footsteps echoed from behind Joseph. I trembled as I looked up. A figure had stopped right behind him. He was still wearing the black mask and cap, holding a menacing chainsaw in his hands. Before Joseph could react, the killer struck, and he collapsed into a pool of blood. The killer slowly turned his gaze toward me. Then, the familiar sharp pain hit me again, and my world started to blur. The live comments appeared."Wait… The heroine is no longer the first victim.""Who's this young man? He's so handsome. Too bad, he's dead as soon as he appears.""What are you talking about? The hero is definitely the most handsome in this story.""But the heroine reached out to him for help. Why did she die, still?"…When I woke up again, I was back, standing at my door, ready to unlock it."Don't open the door! That dude isn't a delivery guy at all! He's a murderer!""He called you to check if you're a woman living alone!""Seriously, why are all thriller
