Chapter 2

Author: Maroon Cypress
I nearly laughed out loud just reading the headlines.

"Sacrificing Himself"? "The Strength of Kinship"?

Seriously, who even thought to come up with titles like these? These reporters sure had a way with words.

I tapped on one of the articles, and the accompanying photo that popped out immediately stung my eyes.

Dad's eyes were red and bloodshot in the photo, and he looked haggard and worried as he leaned against his assistant for support, unable to stand on his own.

Meanwhile, William was lying in a hospital bed with a pale face and an IV drip in his hand. Violet was sitting by the bed, peeling an apple for him.

What a touching scene of fatherly love, full of tender affection for each other.

I saved the photo to the phone before turning it off.

Time passed. I wrapped myself tighter in my last thermal blanket, curling myself up into a ball.

Even though I was sheltered from the falling snow and the chilling winds by the snow cave, the chill still seeped into my bones through my clothes.

After what felt like forever, my satellite phone rang once more. It was Zack.

"Wilfred! Wilfred, can you hear me? We've already arrived at the mountains, but the helicopter can't land. We can only come up from the foot of the mountain. Hold on tight!"

"Don't worry. I'm not going to die just yet," I said, licking my dry, chapped lips. "By the way, I need you to do me a favor."

"What is it?"

"Check all the flights going in and out of Lesterville in these past few days. Is there anyone named Violet Hathaway on the list?"

I was referring to my "gentle" and "quiet" fiancee, of course.

In my past life, it wasn't until after my death that I found out she and William had been seeing each other behind my back since a while back.

The so-called marriage alliance was just nothing more than a conspiracy between the Carsons and the Hathaways to seize the inheritance my mom left me after she passed away.

Violet played the role of the perfect fiancee in front of me, even though she was basically glued to the hips with William behind my back.

Zack went silent on the phone for a while. Then, I heard the sound of a keyboard tapping away.

"I got it. She returned from Parres three days ago. Business class."

She flew back three days ago, which was the day before the avalanche happened.

My heart sank at the realization.

She was in such a hurry, anticipating it after all.

"One more thing, Zack," I said, my voice as cold as ice. "Send photos of Violet and William being intimate with each other in the hospital's VIP ward to the largest entertainment media outlets in Lesterville. Make sure to stay anonymous.

"As for the headline, tell them to use, 'Body of Heir Not Yet Laid to Rest, but Fiancee and Stepbrother Begin Their Hospital Romance'."

Zack let out a low whistle. "That's a good, ruthless headline. I like it. You've finally come to your senses, Freddie. You know you can't be soft when dealing with scumbags like them."

"This is just the appetizer," I said before hanging up. Then, I stuffed the last of the energy bar into my mouth and forced myself to swallow.

I needed to conserve energy. A fierce battle was still awaiting me.

The sky had completely darkened by then, and the snow cave had turned pitch black.

Just as I was about to pass out, I suddenly heard faint footsteps and several muffled shouts outside the snow cave.

"Wilfred!"

"Freddie!"

It was Zack and the others!

I roused myself and crawled out of the snow cave with whatever energy I had left. Just a short distance away, several figures were braving the wind and snow as they struggled to approach me with powerful flashlights.

Zack was right in front of the group, leading them along.

When he caught sight of me, he immediately dashed toward me and pulled me tightly into his arms.

"You bastard! Thank God you're still alive!" he exclaimed, his voice trembling from relief.

I patted him on the back and said, "I told you I wasn't going to die yet."

"Cut the crap and let's get going. I don't want to stay in this hellhole for another second."

One of the rescue team members immediately draped a thick down jacket over my shoulders while another handed me a thermal flask. The warm cocoa flowed down my parched throat, dispelling much of the chill in my body.

The descent was far more difficult than I had imagined, yet Zack's team was very professional, securing a safety rope around my waist and protecting me from both sides as we climbed down.

Every tree and every blade of grass here was still the same as how I remembered it to be.The first thing I did was to dismiss all of the house help. Previously, Dad had fired the original team and replaced them with his own people instead.I began living alone in this empty villa, but I never felt more relaxed and secure in my life. One afternoon, I received an unexpected phone call from the police station."Hello, is this Mr. Wilfred Carson? Mr. Michael Carson wants to see you."I went silent for a while be

The past several hours of intense tension left me feeling extremely exhausted."Is it over now?" Zack asked."No. It's just the start."Next, the Carson family would be facing shareholder withdrawals, bank debt collections, and a thorough investigation by the Securities and Exchange Commission. Since they were all interconnected, there was no way for Dad or William to escape."You did well," Zack said, handing me a bottle of water. "But are you really just going to let that Hathaway woman off just like that?""Let her off?" I uncapped the bottle and took a swig of the water. "The best is yet to come."The first thing I did after returning to my hotel suite was to call up Violet's dad, Andrew Hathaway, who was also the chairman of Hathaway Group. The Hathaway and Carson families were old friends, and the Hathaways were the main driving force behind this marriage alliance in the first place.Andrew had always thought highly of me and wanted to use the marriage to bind the two com

It took less than ten minutes for stock prices to go from limit up to limit down. Countless calls bombarded Dad's phone, all from the board of directors, shareholders, business partners, and more. However, Dad didn't pick up a single call.He just stared intently at me like he was staring at a monster."Why…"His voice was hoarse."I brought you up for 20 years… Why are you doing this to me?""You brought me up for 20 years?"I felt like I'd just heard the funniest joke in my life."Sure, you did bring me up for 20 years, and you did it with Mom's money, spending it not just on me but also on your bastard, illegitimate son."You were also the one who forced me to call your mistress 'Mom' and her son my elder brother. You enjoyed everything Mom provided you with while simultaneously despising me, Mom's biological son, for being an eyesore to you."Why don't you ask yourself if you've done right by me, or my deceased mom, over the past 20 years?"My voice got louder and louder

William was right.Dad had built a strong foundation at Carson Group over many years and forged deep, personal relationships with all stakeholders at the company.Meanwhile, I had little say in the company because Mom died young, and I constantly rebelled against Dad. As long as Dad refused to admit his wrongdoings, it would indeed be difficult for me to completely bring them down based on these two recordings alone. However, William missed something important.I had never intended to engage in any business competition with him in the first place."You seem to have forgotten something, William," I said, looking at him with a sly smile on my face. "I may have the last name 'Carson', but my mom's last name is 'Sheppard'—the very same family who founded Sheppard Group that was later acquired by Carson Group, but still retained their original 30% share in the company."William's expression finally dropped.Sheppard Group was my grandfather's life's work. When Mom married Dad, who

Meanwhile, my dear fiancee, Violet, kept glaring daggers at me with a gaze so intense it looked like she wanted to skin me alive.I met their gazes and grinned. "Aren't you all happy to see me?"I walked up to the front of the stage, and one of the bodyguards pulled out a chair for me."Dad, were you just holding a memorial service for me earlier?"Dad trembled. "Wilfred! You're back! That's wonderful! Do you know how worried I was about you?"He rushed down the stage to grab my hand while sporting a grimace on his face that was probably meant to be a smile. However, I ducked slightly, avoiding his touch. "You were worried about me? Or, were you worried that I would die on the alpine mountains instead?"Dad's expression froze at once. Now, all eyes on us were even more intense than ever before. All of the reporters could sniff a massive story from a mile away."Please answer our questions, Mr. Wilfred! Is it true that your father and your stepbrother plotted your death in the

Dad was just about to announce at the press conference that he was going to formally take legal action against the media houses spreading the false rumors on both William's and Violet's behalf when the giant LED screen behind him suddenly turned black. There was a commotion in the press conference room. However, just a few seconds later, the screen lit up again, and a video appeared on it.The video was somewhat shaky and very dark, but anyone could still tell that it was recorded in a hospital room.William was lying in the hospital bed, and Violet was sitting next to him, looking extremely impatient."Ugh, those reporters are annoying as hell! How much longer do we have to keep up this act?""Just put up with it a little longer," William answered, his voice sounding rather excited. "Nobody will dare to bother us anymore once Wilfred's death is confirmed. And when that time comes, Violet, everything in the Carson family will belong to us!""Is your dad alright with it too?""D
