THE FIRST CRACK

Ashley Kade had no memory of leaving the private lounge. One moment she was watching Damian and Lyra Moretti, and the next, she sat alone in her car staring at her phone.

ARE YOU SURE ARORA VANCE IS DEAD?

Seven words only shattered the six months of peace. She hated uncertainty, hated not knowing, and most of all she hated the fear crawling beneath her skin. When she closed her eyes, she saw Lyra Moretti watching her across the ballroom, smiling and recognition without memory; she saw a shadow of someone dead.

“Ashley.”

Damian’s voice pulled her back; he was unfastening his cufflinks, calm and unaffected.

“We need to talk.”

She handed him her phone; he scanned the screen and handed it back. “Is it a prank?”

“You think this is funny?”

 “No.”

“Then why are you acting like it doesn’t matter?”

Damian poured his whiskey. “You’re overthinking it.”

“I am not.”

“You are.”

Ashley’s irritation rose. “You didn’t see that woman, the way she was smiling.”

“Lyra Moretti?”

He remembered her name instantly, which only annoyed her further.

“There’s something wrong about her.”

“What exactly?”

“I don’t know.”

The confession tasted bitter, and for the first time in years, her instincts screamed, and she couldn’t decode why. Damian hesitated. Just a fraction of a second, Ashley caught it: something about Lyra had affected him. Her stomach twisted, not for jealousy but something colder. Damian was detached by nature; he rarely noticed anyone, yet tonight, he hadn’t been able to take his eyes off Lyra.

“I want a full investigation,” Ashley demanded.

A heavy silence. Then: “I already ordered one.”

She stared at him, knowing he had already acted, which made her feel worse.

Across the city, Lyra stood on a balcony; the ocean stretched endlessly, dark, powerful, and unforgiving. Her first appearance had been a success; everything went according to plan. Yet exhaustion weighed on her. The glass door slid open. Hayden stepped in with two coffees, a small smile despite the hour.

“You did well tonight,” he said.

“Did I?”

“You walked into a room filled with the people who stole your life, and you didn’t flinch once.”

A bitter laugh escaped her. “You make it sound impressive.”

“It is.”

She lowered her eyes. “For a split second....... I wanted to tell him.”

“Damian?”

She nodded. “I wanted to look him in the eyes and tell him exactly who I am.”

Hayden waited. “And then?”

Then I remembered the ocean, the memory struck pitch-black water, cold, Damian’s voice, and the moment he pushed her. She closed her eyes and spoke. “I remember what he did to me.”

“You don’t need revenge tonight; you need patience.” He spoke.

“You always say that.”

“Because it’s true.”

Lyra looked down at her coffee. Six months ago, Damian had broken her down. But tonight, she stood, and a terrifying thought crossed her mind: was she strong because she survived the fall, or only strong because Hayden stood beside her?

The following dawn, Damian sat alone in his office. A thick file rested on his desk: LYRA MORETTI. He opened the file. Every detail about her was stated: investments, properties, and travel records. Everything appeared normal and too perfect, as if someone had erased every loose thread.

“The investigation is complete,” his security director said.

“And?”

The man hesitated; maybe someone deliberately buried her past. There was a brief silence.  Damian leaned back, and his gaze drifted toward the photograph. Lyra stood beneath crystal chandeliers, holding a champagne glass; she was confident and elegant, and Damian recalled how she looked at him, uninterested, almost as if she knew him. It should have annoyed him instead; it intrigued him. For the first time in months, he wanted to see her again; it irritated him. Damian Kade was not ruled by curiosity, yet Lyra Moretti had become the expectation.

Meanwhile, Lyra sat in the private conference room across from three board members. One executive slid a thick folder toward her. “The final acquisition papers are ready, Ms Moretti. Once you sign these tomorrow morning, the asset transfer is official.”

Lyra opened the folder, scanned the pages, and smiled.  It wasn't a major acquisition yet, but it was enough to crack, move, and warn Damian Kade’s empire.

“You seem pleased,” the board member noted.

“I am,” Lyra replied, a cold smile touching her lips as she closed the file.

“Tomorrow, everything changes.”

Nobody in the room understood the weight of her words, but they would very soon.

That evening, Ashley’s phone vibrated; it was an unknown number. Her stomach tightened instantly, and her hands shook as she opened the message and four words appeared. GHOST DON’T STAY BURIED FOREVER. The air left her lungs, and colour drained from her face. Her hands were trembling as she opened her laptop. For months she had avoided this name, but tonight, she couldn’t stop herself. She typed: ARORA VANCE.

The screen loaded, and for the first time in six months, Ashley was afraid of ghosts, and she believed in ghosts.

  • BETRAYED BY MY FIANCE; REBORN AS HIS OBSESSION   CHAPTER 21: THE THINGS HE COULN'T IGNORE

Damian barely slept that night. Every time he closed his eyes, his mind dragged him back to the eastern wing- to the open maintenance door, the suffocating darkness, and the chilling voice that had emerged from it.You shouldn’t have come back.He had caught the raw fear in Lyra’s silence. She had tried desperately to mask it, but Damian had spent years mastering the art of reading people. He hadn’t missed the subtle hitch in her breathing, the way her knuckles whitened against her coat, or the telltale split second of hesitation before she spoke. She was lying to him. He was certain of it. The only burning question was why.By seven the next morning, Damian was already at his desk, staring down at an open security report. The breach itself had lasted less than two minutes. In that brief window, all the cameras had been systematically blinded, the terminal logs entirely wiped, and no employees’ badges had been registered in the restricted sector. Whoever had infiltrated the building k

“Then let’s see how much you can uncover.”Damian held Lyra’s gaze before a slow smile broke the gravity on his face. “I have a feeling you’re going to make that incredibly difficult.”“Probably.”The waiter arrived, placing their drinks on the table with a practised quietness. The brief interruption gave Lyra a moment to steady her pulse. She hadn’t expected the evening to feel this normal, and that normalcy was precisely what made it lethal. She had come into this restaurant with a singular purpose: Damian Kade was the architect of her past misery, the man she had sworn to dismantle piece by piece. Yet sitting across from him now, listening to his unfamiliar laughter and watching the corporate tension bleed from his shoulders, she found she was viewing a side of him she hadn’t accounted for. She couldn’t afford to forget her past.“So,” Damian said, lifting his glass, “tell me something I don’t know about you.”Lyra offered a guarded smile. “You’ve known me for weeks, Damian.”“Long

Lyra was halfway through a stack of financial reports when Damian appeared in her office doorway.“Seven o’clock,” he said. She looked up from the documents, leaning back in her chair. “You’re actually serious about this dinner?”A faint smile touched his lips. “I told you I was.”Lyra studied him carefully, trying to read the angles of his face. “And this isn’t an extension of the board meeting?”“No.” Damian took a few steps into the room, cutting the distance between them. “For once, I’d like to talk to you without a conference table separating us.”She narrowed her eyes. “Why?”“Because I want to.”The answer was too simple, and that made her cautious. Lyra knew better than to underestimate Damian Kade. Every move he made was usually calculated, every syllable weighted for impact. Yet lately, something about his posture seemed different. It made him a completely different kind of dangerous. She closed the file in front of her with a deliberate click. “Fine.”His eyebrows lifted sl

  • BETRAYED BY MY FIANCE; REBORN AS HIS OBSESSION   CHAPTER 18: THE LINE WE SHOULDN'T CROSS

Lyra woke up the next morning with the image of Hayden standing alone in his dark library still heavy in her mind. No matter how hard she tried, she couldn't shake the unsettling feeling that he was hiding something. Her mind drifted back to the previous night. She had walked down the hall to find him, stepping silently toward the library doors. She had intended to knock, but through the slight crack in the doorframe, she stopped. The room was swallowed by shadows, illuminated only by the faint moonlight cutting through the glass. Hayden was standing perfectly still in the darkness, staring at the locked cabinet. He thought he was entirely alone, and the expression on his face-a chilling mix of heavy guilt and deep, fracturing thought-had frozen the breath in her throat. He looked like a man being crushed by a weight he couldn't share. It had unsettled her so deeply that she had quietly backed away into the corridor, leaving him alone with his secrets.Remembering that dark look now m

Lyra barely noticed the view; her eyes were fixed on the old brass compass resting on her desk. For the third time that morning, she picked it up; the needle spun in a slow, erratic circle before snapping to a rigid halt, always pointing down. She let out a quiet sigh.“You’ve been staring at that thing for thirty minutes.”Hayden’s voice drifted from the doorway; he walked into the office with two mugs of coffee, placing one beside her before sitting down across the desk.“I thought it would change,” Lyra murmured, tracing the cold metal.“The compass?”“No.” She managed a faint smile. “My luck.”Hayden chucked softly. “I’ve seen you negotiate billion-dollar corporate mergers without blinking, Lyra. But this little compass genuinely unsettles you.”“Because it doesn’t make sense.”“Not everything in life is meant to make immediate sense.” A comfortable silence settled between them. Lyra took a slow sip of her coffee; her gaze drifted back to Hayden. “You knew my father, didn’t you?

  • BETRAYED BY MY FIANCE; REBORN AS HIS OBSESSION   CHAPTER 16: THE CRACKS IN THE MASK

The elevator door slid open, and Lyra stepped onto the executive floor of Vance Biotech. Morning sunlight spilt through the floor-to-ceiling windows, catching against the sharp glass walls and polished marble. She adjusted the strap of her bag and took a slow breath. She had barely taken three steps when-“Good morning.”Damian’s voice cut right through her concentration. He was leaning against the doorframe of his office, his suit jacket hooked over one thumb, a tablet pinned under his arm. He looked her up and down, his eyes narrowed slightly. “You look like you didn’t sleep a wink.”Lyra forced a tiny, polite smile. “Just thinking.”“A dangerous pastime.”“Usually is.”For a second, the corporate professional act vanished, and they just stood there looking at each other. Then Damian nodded toward his open door. “Walk with me. I’ve been going over those logistics revisions from yesterday.”She fell into step beside him, the faint scent of his expensive cologne catching her off guard
