THE MAN WHO FOUND HER

Lyra’s declaration hung in the air after she spoke.  “Serious enough to change ownership structures.” Everyone understood it was a challenge, though no one knew what she meant. Damian’s eyes remained fixed on her. Six months ago, she had begged for his attention. Now she had it without trying; the satisfaction tasted like ash.

 “You’re enjoying this,” Hayden said.

 “Maybe.”

“That sounds dangerous.”

 “Good.”

For a second, his expression softened; something in that look pulled at a memory she wasn’t ready to face.

Six months earlier, Arora woke up with a gasp, body shaking violently. For one horrifying second, she thought she was still drowning, Damian’s voice replaying in her ears, and the feeling of falling into endless black water.

“No.”

She jolted upright, heart racing, and there were large windows, soft lighting, white walls- not the ocean, and she was not fighting for her life. The door opened, Hayden entered with water, and noticed her panic immediately. He set the glass down slowly and then sat not too close, and not too far, giving her space.

 “You’re safe.”

His voice was calm, steady, and real. Arora closed her eyes, though the trembling wouldn’t stop. Minutes passed in silence. Hayden waited patiently until her breathing slowed.

 “Nightmares?”

She laughed bitterly. “More like a memory.”

“Try to sleep again.”

 “I don’t want to.”

“Why?”

She turned toward the window. “Because every time I close my eyes, I see him.” She regretted the confession immediately, but Hayden simply stood. “Come with me.”

They stood on the rooftop terrace; there was cool night air, and waves crashing below. Hayden handed her coffee. She frowned. “You drink coffee at two in the morning?”

“No.”

“Then why do you have coffee?”

“You keep having nightmares.”

She stared at him. “You expected this?”

“I prepared for it.”

Something strange moved in her chest; nobody had prepared for her before, and nobody anticipated her pain.

Lyra blinked, realizing she had held a champagne glass she couldn’t remember taking. Hayden noticed immediately.

“You disappeared again.”

“The past is becoming difficult to ignore tonight.”

“Don’t let it control you.”

Movement near the entrance caught her attention. A man in a black suit, one of Damian’s security directors, her stomach tightened. Six months ago, she had seen that same man on the yacht minutes before Damian pushed her into the ocean. He moved through the crowd; he had a tablet in his hand he whispered to Damian. Lyra caught the change instantly, the first genuine concern she’d seen on Damian’s face. He studied the tablet, and then walked alone toward a private hallway.

“What is it?” Hayden asked.

“I don’t know.” But something had changed. Lyra’s instincts kicked in. That hallway led to confidential secret offices and decisions never meant to be recorded. Hayden read her expression.

“Don’t.”

 “I didn’t say anything.”

“You don’t have to.”

She smiled. “You know me too well, and that worries me.”

Damian had disappeared. Six months ago, she would have followed him out of trust, but now she wanted to follow him because she didn’t; the difference felt like power. Ashley appeared near the corridor, not hiding her concern but searching the room, settling briefly on Lyra. She was nervous, and Ashley didn’t get nervous without reason. Lyra cracked a tiny, real smile. Their empire wasn’t as stable as it appeared.

Three months after her rescue, rain covered the stone pathways behind Hayden’s estate. Arora’s muscles burned; he had pushed her all morning, correcting every mistake, exposing every weakness, and ignoring every excuse.

“I hate you.”

Hayden folded his arms. “I know.”

She turned to leave, but her foot slipped on the wet stone. As she was almost falling, Hayden’s arms caught her around the waist before she hit the ground; rain fell around them, their faces were inches apart, and neither moved nor looked away. Something passed between them; neither was ready to name it. Hayden stepped back, and the moment vanished, but neither forgot.

Lyra blinked; the memory dissolved no rain, no training ground, and no warmth of hands around her waist, just the soft murmur of conversations. Hayden was beside her, looking at her like he knew exactly where her thoughts had gone; their eyes met, and silence felt familiar and dangerously comfortable.

“Miss Moretti.” A board member approached. “The chairman would like to continue the discussion.” The chairman. Damian. Lyra felt disgusted at the thought of him being chairman. She gave a cold look; all the softness vanished from her eyes. She remembered her agenda: revenge, war, were her main goals, not memories, not emotions, and not the man standing beside her.

Damian had already returned, watching her with sharper focus; something had changed when she focused on the tablet. Ashley stood rigid in the distance, tension visible in her shoulders and unease in her eyes. She loved the fact that they were worried. For six months, they believed Arora Vance was dead. There she stood in front of them, and neither of them knew about it.

“Remember why you’re here,” Hayden whispered.

She gave a cold smile and walked toward Damian. Each step was deliberate, calculated, and powerful. His gaze never left her face as she came walking towards him. It felt as if they were the only ones in the entire room. The predator and the prey. The only problem was neither of them knew who was who anymore. Damian offered her a drink; she glanced at the glass, and she smiled as he declined. “I prefer watching people lose control while I stay.” Her voice was calm, controlled, and dangerous. For the first time, Damian laughed. The sound sent a chill down his spine. Not from fearing him but because she remembered loving that laugh, and she hated herself for remembering it. The hatred fuelled her anger. The game had finally begun.

Ashley watched from a distance, alarm growing. Then her phone vibrated three times; she pulled it out and the colour drained from her face. Lyra caught the change; Ashley’s hand trembled as she read the message, genuine fear gripped her features.

ARE YOU SURE ARORA VANCE IS DEAD?

Lyra smiled without knowing why, but Ashley’s terror gave her chills. The first crack in the empire had just widened, and soon everything would begin to fall apart.

  • BETRAYED BY MY FIANCE; REBORN AS HIS OBSESSION   CHAPTER 18: THE LINE WE SHOULDN'T CROSS

Lyra woke up the next morning with the image of Hayden standing alone in his dark library still heavy in her mind. No matter how hard she tried, she couldn't shake the unsettling feeling that he was hiding something. Her mind drifted back to the previous night. She had walked down the hall to find him, stepping silently toward the library doors. She had intended to knock, but through the slight crack in the doorframe, she stopped. The room was swallowed by shadows, illuminated only by the faint moonlight cutting through the glass. Hayden was standing perfectly still in the darkness, staring at the locked cabinet. He thought he was entirely alone, and the expression on his face-a chilling mix of heavy guilt and deep, fracturing thought-had frozen the breath in her throat. He looked like a man being crushed by a weight he couldn't share. It had unsettled her so deeply that she had quietly backed away into the corridor, leaving him alone with his secrets.Remembering that dark look now m

Lyra barely noticed the view; her eyes were fixed on the old brass compass resting on her desk. For the third time that morning, she picked it up; the needle spun in a slow, erratic circle before snapping to a rigid halt, always pointing down. She let out a quiet sigh.“You’ve been staring at that thing for thirty minutes.”Hayden’s voice drifted from the doorway; he walked into the office with two mugs of coffee, placing one beside her before sitting down across the desk.“I thought it would change,” Lyra murmured, tracing the cold metal.“The compass?”“No.” She managed a faint smile. “My luck.”Hayden chucked softly. “I’ve seen you negotiate billion-dollar corporate mergers without blinking, Lyra. But this little compass genuinely unsettles you.”“Because it doesn’t make sense.”“Not everything in life is meant to make immediate sense.” A comfortable silence settled between them. Lyra took a slow sip of her coffee; her gaze drifted back to Hayden. “You knew my father, didn’t you?

  • BETRAYED BY MY FIANCE; REBORN AS HIS OBSESSION   CHAPTER 16: THE CRACKS IN THE MASK

The elevator door slid open, and Lyra stepped onto the executive floor of Vance Biotech. Morning sunlight spilt through the floor-to-ceiling windows, catching against the sharp glass walls and polished marble. She adjusted the strap of her bag and took a slow breath. She had barely taken three steps when-“Good morning.”Damian’s voice cut right through her concentration. He was leaning against the doorframe of his office, his suit jacket hooked over one thumb, a tablet pinned under his arm. He looked her up and down, his eyes narrowed slightly. “You look like you didn’t sleep a wink.”Lyra forced a tiny, polite smile. “Just thinking.”“A dangerous pastime.”“Usually is.”For a second, the corporate professional act vanished, and they just stood there looking at each other. Then Damian nodded toward his open door. “Walk with me. I’ve been going over those logistics revisions from yesterday.”She fell into step beside him, the faint scent of his expensive cologne catching her off guard

  • BETRAYED BY MY FIANCE; REBORN AS HIS OBSESSION   CHAPTER 15: THE LOCKED DOOR

“You’re thinking about the building again.”Hayden’s voice cut through the quiet as he stepped into the kitchen. Lyra stood motionless by the window; her coffee cooling on the counter, untouched. In her palm, the brass compass felt heavy; it warmed her skin. She didn’t turn around. “I can’t stop.” Her thumb traced the edge of the glass casing. “It keeps pointing down.”Hayden came to her side; his gaze dropped to the compass in her open hand. “Some answers take time, Lyra.”“I’ve spent months waiting.”“And you’ll wait a little longer if it keeps you safe.”A faint smile touched her lips, though her eyes remained on the brass compass. “You always know the right thing to say.”“No.” He picked up his own mug and took a slow sip. “I just know when to stay quiet”Her phone vibrated against the marble countertop. The screen lit up: Damian Kade. She swiped the screen before the second ring. “Good morning, Mr Kade.”“Hope I’m not interrupting your morning.”“Not at all.”“I’ve scheduled the

“Ms Moretti, Mr Kade is waiting for you in operations.”The notification popped onto her desktop monitor just past nine. Lyra didn’t check up on her spreadsheets immediately. Since the Vance Biotech ink had dried on the partnership contract, Damian’s “urgent request” had turned into a daily routine. It wasn’t an accident. It was a pressure test, and she didn’t intend to blink first. She dropped her laptop into a leather bag, straightened her blazer, and left for the office. The atmosphere inside the main building had shifted since yesterday. The usual corporate polish was gone, replaced by a frantic, low-level hum. The receptionist, who was usually a statue of perfect manners, was aggressively pounding the keyboard while ignoring a blinking switchboard. When the elevator doors parted on the upper floor, the chaos hit her full force. Large wall screens flashed amber warning codes, and logistics maps were lit up like a Christmas tree. In the centre of the room, she was surrounded by a

“ What promise, Dad?”The question escaped Lyra’s lips long before dawn. Sleep had abandoned her hours ago. She lay awake, staring at the ceiling, unable to quiet the thoughts circling in her mind. She wasn’t thinking about Damian Kade, nor the partnership terms- her mind kept anchoring to the old janitor’s word. She reached into her bedside drawer and unfolded the faded photograph. Richard Vance smiling warmly into the lens, one arm wrapped around eight-year-old Arora. Lyra traced the worn edge of the picture; someone had carried this artefact for years. It wasn’t merely a keepsake. It was a lifeline thing. She turned it over to read the script on the back: Some promises survive even in death.“What promise, Dad?” she whispered into the empty room.Morning arrived with soft sunlight and the rich aroma of freshly brewed coffee. Lyra stepped into the kitchen to find Hayden pouring coffee into two ceramic mugs; his shirt sleeves were rolled up to his elbows.“I was beginning to think y
