Jordy woke up with a headache.

For a moment he stayed in bed staring at the ceiling, trying to remember why his head hurt so much.

His mouth felt dry and his body felt heavy.

Then the memories from last night slowly started coming back—the club, the loud music, and the drinks.

"Ugh," he groaned.

He reached for his phone on the table beside his bed and squinted at the screen.

It was 8:11 AM. Jordy sat up quickly and immediately regretted it.

The movement made his head pound harder, and the room spun for a second before settling.

He pressed his fingers to his temple and muttered, "Great."

After sitting there for a moment, he swung his legs off the bed and stood up slowly.

The house was quiet except for faint sounds coming from downstairs.

His mom was already up.

She was probably in the kitchen making breakfast like she usually did.

Jordy stretched his arms above his head and walked out of his room toward the bathroom across the hallway.

When he turned on the light, the brightness made him squint.

"Why is that so bright?" he complained under his breath.

He leaned over the sink and splashed cold water onto his face a few times before looking up at the mirror.

His hair was messy and his eyes looked tired.

He rubbed his face with both hands and sighed.

That was when the memories from last night started creeping back into his mind again.

The crowded club, Ella laughing at something Leo said, and then Matt.

Jordy straightened up immediately. "Nope," he said to himself.

He didn't want to think about that right now.

Last night had been weird. They had both been drinking and things had just happened.

It didn't mean anything.

At least that was what he kept telling himself.

He turned on the shower and stepped inside.

The hot water ran down his shoulders, easing some of the tension in his body.

For a moment he stood there with his eyes closed, letting the water wake him up.

Unfortunately, his brain kept drifting back to the same thing—Matt's face, his smile, the way he had stood close to him.

Jordy shook his head under the water and muttered, "Forget it."

A few minutes later he stepped out, dried himself off, and went back to his room.

He opened his closet and grabbed a black T-shirt and a pair of jeans.

They were simple but clean enough for work.

The fast-food place where he worked part time didn't care much about clothes.

As he pulled the shirt over his head, he sighed and said quietly, "It was just one night."

They probably wouldn't even see each other again anyway.

Matt had been there celebrating his birthday, and Jordy had only been there because Leo dragged him along.

It had just been a random night.

Nothing more.

Once he finished getting dressed, Jordy grabbed his phone and wallet and stuffed them into his backpack.

When he checked the time again, he groaned.

It was already 8:34 AM.

"Crap."

Now he was definitely late.

He hurried out of his room and went downstairs.

The smell of food reached him before he even stepped into the kitchen—eggs and toast.

His stomach growled immediately.

His mom stood by the stove flipping eggs in a pan and quietly humming to herself.

Jordy leaned against the doorway and watched her for a moment before saying, "Morning."

She turned around with a small smile.

"Morning."

Jordy walked over to the counter and poured himself a glass of water, watching her for a second before saying, "You look happy."

She laughed softly and asked, "Do I?" He nodded and took a sip of water. "You're humming."

"Well," she said while turning back to the stove, "maybe I'm in a good mood."

Jordy crossed his arms and leaned against the counter. "Why?"

She flipped the eggs and answered casually, "I have a date today."

Jordy blinked. "A date?"

"Yes."

"With that guy you mentioned before?"

She nodded. "Yeah, him."

Jordy tilted his head slightly. "So it's serious?"

"We'll see," she said with a shrug.

He smirked. "You're humming. That says a lot."

She pointed the spatula at him. "Don't start."

He laughed. "Okay, okay."

She placed the food onto a plate and glanced at him. "Sit down and eat."

Jordy pulled out his phone and checked the time again before shaking his head.

"I can't. I'm late.

She looked at him knowingly. "You went out last night, didn't you?"

"With Leo," Jordy admitted.

"A club?"

"Yeah."

"How much did you drink?" she asked.

Jordy hesitated. "A bit."

She gave him a look.

"Okay," he corrected himself, "maybe a lot."

"I can tell," she said.

He rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly. "It was a long night."

She studied him for a moment before asking, "Did you at least have fun?"

Jordy paused. Matt crossed his mind again, but he quickly pushed the thought away.

"Yeah," he said simply.

She nodded and grabbed a piece of toast from the plate, handing it to him.

"Take this at least."

Jordy smiled and accepted it.

"Thanks."

He took a bite while slinging his backpack over his shoulder.

"You work all day?" she asked.

"Just the afternoon shift."

"That's good," she said.

"You should rest tonight."

Jordy shrugged. "We'll see."

She gave him a look. "Jordy."

"What?"

"Sleep."

"I will."

"You said that yesterday."

"And I meant it," he replied with a small grin.

She shook her head but smiled.

"You're impossible."

Jordy finished the toast and headed toward the door.

"Have fun on your date," he said.

"I will."

"And don't worry if you get home late."

She smiled warmly.

"Thanks."

Jordy slipped on his shoes and opened the door.

"Bye, Mom."

"Bye, Jordy."

He stepped outside and closed the door behind him.

The cool morning air hit his face, and his headache had eased a little.

He adjusted his backpack and started walking toward the bus stop.

The city was already busy, with cars passing by and people heading to work.

Jordy tried to focus on the day ahead, but his mind drifted back to last night again.

Matt.

He sighed and shoved his hands into his pockets.

"It doesn't matter," he muttered to himself.

It had just been one night.

They probably wouldn't even see each other again.

And honestly, that was probably for the best.

  • Between Closed Doors   Chapter 54: Things Left Unsaid

A few weeks after the wedding, life somehow settled into something that looked normal.Too normal. At first, Jordy kept expecting things to fall apart immediately. He expected awkwardness, tension, mistakes, or at least some huge shift in the house after their parents got married. But none of that happened.Instead, everything blended together frighteningly well. His mom adjusted quickly to the new house, moving around comfortably like she had lived there forever. Matt’s dad seemed happier too, more relaxed than Jordy had ever seen him. Even Maya had returned fully to her usual self, spending more time outside the house than inside it and acting like nothing around her surprised her anymore. And somehow, Jordy and Matt adapted too. They became careful.Careful in the way they looked at each other around people.Careful with touches.Careful with timing.Their relationship turned into quiet moments stolen between r

  • Between Closed Doors   Chapter 53: The Morning After

Jordy woke up slowly. Not the kind of waking where everything settled into place immediately, but the kind where his body felt too heavy to move and his thoughts floated around without direction. For a few seconds, he just stared at the ceiling above him, blinking slowly as sunlight pushed faintly through the curtains. He did not recognize where he was at first. Then everything came back all at once. The wedding. The house.Matt.The vows. The reception.Last night. His eyes closed briefly as he let out a slow breath.Right.This was his room now.Or at least it was supposed to be.He shifted slightly on the bed and immediately felt the dull ache spread through his body, not painful enough to make him complain, but enough to remind him how little rest he had actually gotten. He dragged a hand through his hair and sat up slowly, squinting toward the curtains again. It was brighter

  • Between Closed Doors   Chapter 52: After the Wedding

The drive back was quiet. Not the soft, comfortable kind of quiet that made you feel at ease, but the kind that settled in after a day that had been too full—too loud, too emotional, too real. It was the kind of silence that pressed gently against your chest, reminding you that something had shifted, even if you could not fully name it yet.Matt drove with both hands on the wheel, his eyes fixed on the road ahead. The streetlights passed in slow intervals, casting brief flashes of gold across his face before disappearing again into the dark.Jordy sat beside him, his head turned toward the window, watching the city blur past like it did not belong to him anymore. His reflection stared back faintly in the glass, his expression unreadable even to himself. His body felt heavy, like the weight of the day had finally sett

  • Between Closed Doors   Chapter 51: The Day Before, The Day Of

The house woke up before the sun did.Jordy knew that because when he opened his eyes, the noise was already there—footsteps, voices, doors opening and closing, the faint clatter of things being moved around like everyone had somewhere urgent to be.He stared at the ceiling for a moment before sitting up slowly. It took him a second to remember. Then it hit.Tomorrow.No—today.The wedding was no longer “in two days” or “tomorrow.”It was now.But first—The day before. The final stretch. He dragged himself out of bed and stepped out into the hallway. The energy in the house was different—faster, louder, more chaotic. It felt like everything was moving at once. His mom was already dressed, moving from one room to another, speaking to someone on the phone while giving instructions at the same time. Matt’s dad was downstairs, coordinating something with a vendor. Maya was leaning on the staircas

  • Between Closed Doors   Chapter 50: Moving In

The next two days came faster than Jordy expected.Too fast. One moment the wedding felt like something far away, something he could ignore when it became too overwhelming, and the next it was right there, pressing into everything. Two days. That was all that was left.Jordy stood in his room, staring at the bags on his bed, half packed, half forgotten. His hands rested on the zipper, but he did not move. It felt strange leaving this room knowing he would not come back to it the same way again.“Jordy!”His mom’s voice broke through his thoughts.“We are leaving soon!”“Coming,” he replied, forcing himself to move.He zipped up the bag, grabbed the rest of his things, and walked out.The house felt different as he stepped through it one last time, quieter than usual, like everything was already letting go. His mom, on the other hand, was glowing, moving around with excitement, checking things, smiling to he

  • Between Closed Doors   Chapter 49: Questions That Linger

The question lingered in the car longer than it should have.“Do you have a girlfriend?”Jordy’s mom sounded casual, like it was just another thing to keep the conversation going between her and Maya’s nonstop chatter, but the moment it dropped, everything slowed.Matt did not answer immediately.Jordy kept his eyes forward, but he felt it—that small pause, that hesitation that said too much.Maya noticed too.Of course she did.She tilted her head slightly, watching Matt with quiet interest, the corner of her lips lifting like she was waiting for something amusing to unfold.Matt finally spoke.“No.”Short. Simple.Jordy’s mom nodded, already moving past it. “Ah, okay. I thought you might.”Matt shrugged lightly. “Not really my thing right now.”Maya let out a soft scoff under her breath, almost silent, like she found the answer funny for reasons she was not about to explain.“So no on

  • Between Closed Doors   Chapter 9: The Surprise

The ride felt… different. Not quiet in an awkward way, and not loud either.Just calm. The kind of calm that settled between two people who didn’t need to force conversation to fill the space. The road stretched ahead of them, the early daylight casting a soft glow through the windshield as the car

Jordy woke up slowly, like his body didn’t want to leave the moment behind. For a few seconds, he didn’t move. His eyes stayed closed as he tried to piece together where he was, what had happened, why everything felt… different. Then it came back.Everythin
