Pepper POV

Moving on was easier said than done.

After the divorce became final, I went out of the country to join my parents.

As expected, they were happy to see me.

When I was with them, everything felt fine, but the evenings were another matter.

In the silence of the night, I poured out my pain.

I cried in bed, letting my tears wet my pillow, but come morning,  I would face my parents with a smiling face, pretending everything was alright.

The routine went on for a week until Mom confronted me one day.

When I thought that I had succeeded with my pretense, my mom knew the truth.

"Where is Dad?"

I asked, taking a seat on the four-seater dining table.

My parents did not wallow in opulence like before, but they weren't poor either.

The furnishings in our home border on practicality and serviceability but are still tasteful.

"He's out playing tennis with his friends."

I smiled at that, knowing my parents are enjoying the quiet and peaceful life in their new home.

"You should do that, too," I commented while forking a piece of pie on the table and playing with it on my plate.

"Pepper, you need to go out, too." My mother said,

"I am fine, Mom."

Mom turned around to stare deep into my eyes.

It was disconcerting. I felt like a child again under her piercing gaze every time she found out I was lying.

Mother shook her head.

"Right now, you are not, but in time you are going to be." She offered, eyes welling with wisdom and unshed tears.

I know how much it pained her to see me like this. It pains me, too.

I sighed, and for the first time since coming here, I let my guard down to allow my mother to see through my uncertainty.

"What if I don't?"

Tears glistened in my eyes when I allowed the pain I was feeling to spread all over my face.

My mother abandoned her cooking. She turned the stove off and pulled the chair next to me to sit on.

She held my hand.

There was so much warmth in her hold that my lids swooped down to cover my eyes.

"You are my daughter. You were young when we hit rock bottom, but we pulled through as a family. You will overcome this pain in time.”

Mother assured me.

But I highly doubt it.

I don't think I will be able to recover from this pain.

It also did not help that I would often flip through New York's business news to check on Victor and his company.

As expected, the company is thriving. There was not much news about his personal life until something caught my attention.

It was a blind item.

“Will there be wedding bells soon for the CEO of an airline and maritime consortium and the mother of his love child? They were seen all over New York, looking like one happy family. Now that the man was divorced, there would be nothing to hold him back from the marriage to push through.”

I bit my lips, and my heart began to pound in my chest.

Then, I began to cry so hard, and started throwing things.

Mom hurriedly went to my room and saw the mess I had made.

“Pepper!”

“I knew it would happen, but why does it hurt so much?” I asked Mom as tears streamed down my face.

Mom gathered me to her chest, comforting me like a child.

“My dear, we cannot force things, especially love. Love should be reciprocal for it to create positive changes in your life. If not, then it was not love.”

“Are you saying I don’t love him? But why does it hurt so much?” I cried.

Mom shook her head.

“No, but a one-sided love will always end in heartbreak.”

After two weeks, I decided I needed to leave.

“I have to do something with myself.”

My dad protested.

“You have so much money in your bank account. You can rest. In fact, you never have to work through your life with the money from all your investments.”

I shook my head.

“I need to keep moving to make this pain go away. Besides, you never brought me up to be a lazy person.”

He chuckled.

When our eyes met, I saw understanding in them.  A wealth of wisdom wrought by years from a man who dreamt big and had his dreams shattered into pieces.

I thought of Victor. He has always been my dream, but now that dream is shattered. He does not love me, and he would never love me.

“You are still thinking about Victor.” My father said sagely.

“He is happy with his new family. I should be happy for him.” Such magnanimous words, but they cost me my heart to say that.

How can someone smile through her pain?

I realized six years later that you only have to see the pain in others to know that you are blessed.

“You are more than enough,” I said in my speech as I began to talk to countless women who suffered trauma in their past relationships.

“You may not be battered and blue physically, but the mental and emotional torture is worse,” I added.

When I finished, the organizer came forward to greet me.

“You did it so well. How can you talk to people with so much confidence, Pepper?” She asked, handing me a bottle of water so I could relieve my parched throat.

“You need to reach rock bottom to be able to do that.”

She nodded as if she knew what I went through.

“Congratulations!”  Samuel Burke greeted me when I got off the stage. He was smiling, eyes crinkling at the corners.

As usual, he looked dapper in his suit and titanium-framed eyeglasses.

When we reached his car, he opened the front passenger seat to reveal an elaborate flower arrangement of iris, sunflower, and tulips.

My eyes widened in delight. “My favorite flowers!” I cried, and stole a quick side glance in his direction.

He seemed to stand tall, proud at the sound of appreciation and happiness I emitted.

When we got inside the car, the flower arrangement sat on my lap. I kept looking at it before stealing glances at his profile.

The flowers symbolize hope, just like the man I was with. He made me believe again in myself and life.

Pepper POV“Are you hurt?” I asked the three children after leaving Victor’s office. I looked at each one worriedly, but they all had this defiant attitude toward me. Their chins raised, and they looked at Victor’s closed door with so much malice. Before I could stop him, Aaron, my eldest, marched back toward Victor’s office. He looked like he was so ready to quash his father with his bare hands. His jaw clenched, and he held his water gun. We both looked surprised when Aaron aimed the water gun at him. “You hurt my Mommy again, and I won’t be easy on you next time.” He warned. Victor and I looked at each other, too stupefied to react. However, I could see the spark of amusement and interest in his eyes as he watched my son. “What’s your name?” He asked. There was a tender quality to his voice when he addressed Aaron, and it made me freeze. I clenched my hand, listening while Aaron interacted with his father.“Aaron! You better remember it next time, Mister!” Aaron cried, and

Victor POV“Let’s talk,” I told her, but she only rolled her eyes defiantly at me. The old Pepper wouldn’t do that, but come to think of it, six years is a long time for a person to change. “Are you seriously asking me for that? It’s been six years too late, Victor. Whatever do you want to achieve with that talk?I watched my ex-wife with eyes full of sorrow and regret.Love was gone from her eyes, replaced instead by an undisguised anger. “Do you really hate me, Pepper?” I blurted out without thinking. Her chin lifted in defiance. “What do you think?” she shot back. I brushed my hair back with my fingers and looked at her face. The warmth that was usually displayed there for me was gone now.An undeniable longing filled me.Without thinking, I grabbed Pepper and held her in my embrace. She began to struggle and pushed back at my chest.“Victor! What are you doing? Stop!” She cried, pushing me away, but I didn’t let her win against my strength.I need this. Just this once. “I

  • BEYOND GOODBYE: Take Me Back EX WIFE    Chapter 18. She Would Still Be Mine

Victor POVThe minute she walked inside the room, my eyes were immediately drawn to her. I can’t help it. A feeling of longing immediately rushed to my head when I realized how, over the years, she has changed her appearance. She was no longer the simple woman that I married. She now had a sense of style. All her own. Her walk, even the way she carries herself, speaks of grace and understated elegance. But more than ever, she was beautiful. There was something about her that changed, but I can't pinpoint what that was. The corporate secretary, and also one of our investors owning one percent share in the company, was talking. Then, our finance manager discussed the company assets and finances before I was called to present my report and my vision for the next five years.I rose from my seat, but before that, I gave a side glance toward Pepper’s seat. She was busy reading the documents in front of her. From time to time, I watched her in hooded eyes, conferring with Samuel Burke

  • BEYOND GOODBYE: Take Me Back EX WIFE    Chapter 17. Part Owner

Pepper POV“Are you ready?” Samuel asked after our car pulled outside the enormous building that houses Gunner Holdings, Inc. We just got to New York last night for this morning’s meeting.I took a deep breath before eyeing the familiar building that used to be my workplace for several years, and felt an unusual feeling of nostalgia. “I am ready.” I nodded.“Then let’s get this party going,” Samuel muttered before leaving the driver's seat to skirt around the front of the car to reach the passenger seat, where I sat patiently waiting for him. When he opened the door and held out his hand, I took another deep breath before taking it. Samuel pulled me out, and then we began walking the short steps to the entrance. "Do I look alright?" I asked. I dressed smartly today in my black pencil skirt and an Ivory satin sailor blouse with a kerchief tied around my neck. "You looked gorgeous!" Samuel replied almost immediately.I would have wanted to complain, but by then, we had already re

Pepper POV“What were you thinking?” Samuel asked suspiciously when he noticed the expression on my face and how I wouldn’t let up my gaze from Victor Gunner, whose car was parked directly in front of us.I shook my head. “Nothing,” I said.Maybe I sounded way too innocent, as a frown formed on Samuel’s face.“Don’t try anything funny, Pepper.” He warned. He must be thinking that I am up to no good.“And why is that? You can’t even stop laughing at my expense!” I demanded, remembering how he cracked up at my expense.Samuel had the gall to look apologetic. He turned sideways to face me. “You know, I was not laughing at you. I was laughing at the situation. Imagine after six years you were able to hold a punch against your ex-husband. That was something, Pepper. I thought the next time you met, you would cower just like before. I was glad you've grown some b*lls!” I could sense the implied appreciation in the way he spoke, and that made me feel proud of myself, too.I never thought t

Pepper POV“What happened here? Why are your nostrils flaring?” Samuel tried to make a joke out of my current state, but I was in no mood for it.I averted my face to avoid his scrutiny, but he quickly held the back of my head and tilted my chin for perusal. I hated it that he was seeing the raw hatred spreading all over my face, but Victor’s parting words infuriated me. It sets me on fire. “Pepper?” Samuel questioned when I did not deign to answer. He playfully tapped at the tip of my nose like he often used to when he was trying to persuade me to calm down, but I was beyond coaxing.I was fuming mad.Heat rushed up my cheeks in anger.Without warning, I rose from my seat and stormed out of the cafe, taking the same path Victor had taken. When I saw Victor near the exit, I quickened my steps. My heels clacked on the floor in my haste. “Wait!” I called out. I knew he heard me. I saw it in the subtle tensing of his back muscles, but Victor did not stop to turn around to face me.
