Emily tossed on her bed as she struggled to get some sleep. It was past midnight and all she could think of was how to get a job and pay her bills that would be due soon.
She ruffled her blanket and threw it over her face in a bid to get some sleep. It was pointless, because the moment she closed her eyes, the different disturbing thoughts swung in.Finally, she sat up and picked up a bracelet that laid on her bedside stool. It was gold, with glitters that shined so bright even in the dark. That was the last present she had gotten from her parents before the accident that claimed their lives on her birthday. Her mother had entered her room by 6:am in the morning, with a little heart shaped cake and a candle on top of it.“It’s your big day my love, make a wish”, her mother had said to her with a bright smile that made her heart elated. She blew off the candle a minute later after which she was pulled into a warm hug.Her father who had been watching them from the door trudged forward and joined the hug, placing calm kisses on her cheeks and digging his hands into her hair.“We have a present for you. You may see it as a mere gift, but then, it’s a good luck charm”, her mother had said and brought out the beautiful bracelet.“This is beautiful”, Emily giggled and took hold of it as though it was the most fragile thing she had ever laid her hands on.“As long as you have it, everything would be good for you”, her mother said in conclusion and drew her in for another hug. That was the last heart warming conversation she had with her parents and inasmuch as it’s been years, she couldn’t deny the fact that the scar was still fresh and new.“I miss you both so much”, she said as she sniffed hard and glared at the bracelet.“Is the good luck charm still working? I need a job badly”, she muttered to herself as she looked at the bracelet as though it held answers to her questions. She dropped it back on the stool and cuddled herself up on the bed, deciding to shut her brain to worrisome thoughts. The next second, she drifted off to sleep, with a visible look of worry and pain on her face. She woke up the next morning to the chirping of birds and the loud noise coming from the street where she lived. She lived in a neighborhood that was so noisy, littered with uneducated and poor individuals, who engaged in different things to survive. That was the only part of the city she could afford and she was glad it had a roof to protect her from sun and rain.“Good morning Emily”, she said to herself, yawning aloud and jumping off her old and creaky bed.She walked over to a part of her room where she wrote her daily affirmations and goals. A smile made it’s way to her face as she reminded herself that she was hardworking and unique. She stretched her hands towards the table and picked up a sticky note and pen.“Get a job today”’ she wrote and placed it on the wall. She had no idea of how to go about it, but deep down, she was willing to give it a try.She walked into the bathroom and had a quick shower after which she settled for a breakfast of coffee and sandwich. She picked up her laptop and scrolled through different pages that updated vacancies in various companies or establishments. She scrolled through each of them as anxiety engulfed her. Most of the vacancies she saw were above her level as the requirements were nothing close to who she was.She sighed in frustration as her phone vibrated, indicating a call.“Hi Ariana”, she said calmly.“I’m so sorry about yesterday’s event”, Arianna said from the other end of the call.Ariana was Emily’s colleague in the restaurant where she previously worked in. She was one person who tried to motivate her during days when she felt extremely sad and worthless.“It’s fine”, Emily replied as she fought the tears that threatened to fall off her eyes.“There’s an opening for a job somewhere”, Ariana informed, making Emily sit up abruptly.“Where?” Emily asked hurriedly.“I would send you the details. Rumors has it that it’s from one of the richest men in the city. The pay is really considerable too. Take a look and give it a try”, Ariana encouraged while Emily smiled in elation.“Thank you so much”, she replied and ended the call. The next minute, her phone beeped and she saw a notification from Ariana. She took in a deep breath as she went through the details of the job.“A maid?” She asked herself, almost screaming in shock.“A maid?” Richard screamed as he stared at Barbara, who appeared to be uninterested in the conversation they were currently having.“Yea, a maid!” Barbara replied nonchalantly as she picked up her lip gloss and rubbed it evenly around her lips.Richard stood up and grabbed her by the wrist, causing her to yelp slightly in pain.“I’m talking to you and when I talk to you, I need you to listen to me!” Richard barked angrily as he glared at Barbara, who rolled her eyes at him and pushed him away.“The next time you lay your hands on me, I would do well to go to the media and tell them how abusive you are!” Barbara threatened as Richard took a few steps away from her.He dug his hands into his head, sinking in great despair and wondering how his marriage turned out to be so bad.“How would you make plans to bring in a maid without informing me?” Richard asked in shock as he shot her a dead glare.“You have no idea if that’s what I want, and you shouldn’t take a decision without telling me
Emily woke up to the light rays of sunshine that pierced into her room through the opening of her window. She made to retire back to sleep when she remembered that she had a job she could get if she tried. Her friend had told her that the job description came from a billionaire and as such, there was every tendency that she would be paid well. She felt quite reluctant when she thought of how stressful the job of being a maid would be at a billionaire’s house. However, she was certain that if she wanted to be able to provide her very dire needs, she needed to get the job.Standing up and rubbing her eyes grumpily, she strolled to the bathroom, where she took a quick shower. For a moment, she stayed still and glared at the mirror, looking at her reflection and watching how silent tears travelled down her eyes and cheeks. She sniffed hard and walked back to her bedroom where a black long gown laid on the bed. While she searched through the internet last night, trying to get some informa
The day was starting off on a bad note for Emily. She had been elated at first about the interview, but her expression turned sour after the incident on the bus.The lady had ignored her and walked out of the bus, failing to apologize and leaving Emily dress soaked in water.Emily finally stood up and got off the bus, ignoring the eyes of people that stared at her and her wet dress.“Did you pee on yourself?” Someone asked her and started laughing aloud in mockery.Emily clenched her fists and bit her lower lip in anger as tears welled up in her eyes. She sat down at the bus station, looking around and gulping hard in frustration. After some minutes, she summoned up courage and stood up, deciding to head to the location of the interview irrespective of how she looked.“Ohh! You’re here for the interview as well?” She heard someone’s voice beside where she stood. She had arrived at the location where she met a big house, one which most individuals wished to live in.It was in one of th
Richard stood at his balcony, taking in the fresh morning air while reminiscing on the period of his life when he was a newly wedded. He scoffed at the realization of how sour things could become in a split of a second.Just then, his eyes darted to the entrance of his house, where he caught a glimpse of two ladies who were seemingly in a fight. At first, he made to wave it off as something irrelevant, until he recalled that today was the day scheduled for the interview.“Could that be some ladies coming for the interview?” He asked himself as he swallowed hard.Without any more thoughts, he made his way to the gate to see for himself.“You’re a bitch!” The lady said to Emily, who was trying so hard to maintain calmness.“I would advise you to leave my hair”, Emily said in a calm but defiant voice.“I won’t leave your hair! Come on, show me what you’ve got”, the lady yelled, causing Emily to clench her fist in anger. The lady was pushing Emily to the wall, but Emily kept trying so har
Emily’s eyes popped out of her socket the moment she heard Richard’s statement. She had thought that she would be disqualified after the little fight she had with the strange lady.Without making any more utterance, she quickly sauntered behind Richard, rolling her eyes on the lady who was trolling behind her.Richard got to the balcony where he intended to hold the interview.“From the information I have, five others are probably on their way here”, Richard said as he narrowed his gaze to the magazine he picked up from the side stool.“What?” The lady said aloud, obviously displeased by the information.Richard shot her a dead glare, causing her to let out a nervous smile. He was getting irritated already and silently, he wished he wasn’t the one in the position of doing this. However, Barbara had imposed the duty on him and there was definitely nothing he could do about it.“You both can have a seat or stand if you wish. We would give the others five minutes to show up”, Richard sa
Emily couldn’t ascertain why it was difficult for people to make use of honest means in their endeavors. It pierced her heart to see how flirty the ladies were, simply because they wanted to win Richard’s heart.“For me…”, Deborah started as she kissed her teeth, obviously feeling proud and concluding that she was the best from all.“I would ensure that everything is tidied up, without a bit of stain or dissatisfaction. I’m willing to do everything you ask of me as your maid that I am”, she said with a wide smile.“You aren’t even the chosen person yet!” Emily groaned inwardly as she sighed in exasperation. She was beginning to lose interest in the job because deep down her heart, she presumed that she was nothing to be compared with the other ladies.“And you? Emily?” Richard asked as he turned his gaze to her, wondering why she never raised her head for a minute.“Emily?” Richard called out again, making Emily shiver in fright.“Well, I, I…”, Emily stuttered as she gulped down hard
Emily got back to her apartment with a heavy heart. She couldn’t decipher how she felt currently, but she was certain that she wasn’t great.“Why does it have to be him?” She asked herself again as she sank into her bed.For days after she got fired, she hadn’t ceased seeing him in her dreams. And now, she was in a position where she met him and might be seeing every day.Emily scoffed at this realization as she rolled on her bed, with images of Richard flashing in her brain. For a moment, she thought of how handsome he looked, and this caused her stomach to churn.“Having butterflies now?” She asked herself unbelievably as she broke into loud laughter.Clearly, she mocked herself. All her life, she never had any special feelings for any guy. Despite how much she tried, she never got to a situation where she had butterflies in her stomach or where she became restless because of a man. It felt awkward that for the first time, she was having such feeling for a man who is a billionair
Richard poured in some coffee into his mug as he sipped on it while strolling into his room. The day had been an adventurous one for him. He still didn’t believe that he had been the one who did the interview for the ladies. He scoffed silently as he walked to his balcony, where he sat down to watch the sunset.Just as he did, his mind trailed off to thoughts of Emily and how quiet and reserved she appeared to be.Unknowingly, he got troubled with the fact that she had gotten fired from her previous job because she spilled food on him.“Where the hell is he?” He heard Barbara’s loud and angry voice. He clenched his fist and took in a deep breath, getting himself prepared for another strange episode in his life as a married man.“You didn’t call me all through the day, did the interview go smoothly?” Barbara asked as she walked into the balcony.Richard was too angry to answer any question from her and as such, he nodded his head in affirmation.“Richard, I’m talking to you!” Barbara
