WHIP WOMAN

*6:55 AM. Sewer Level 3, Melbourne.*

The stairs ended in a long corridor. Red light pulsed from the walls like a heartbeat. The air smelled like iron and old blood.

At the end stood a massive black iron door. Carved into it was a whip, coiled and ready to strike.

`[BOSS ENCOUNTER: WHIP WOMAN]`

`[RULE: SINGLE COMBAT ONLY]`

`[REWARD: KEY TO PROCEED]`

Selena stopped Ethan with her hand. "It’s a duel door. Only one can go in."

Ethan’s jaw tightened. "Then let me go."

"No." Selena’s voice was calm but firm. "She hurt me. This fight is mine."

She looked at Lily, then back at Ethan. "Watch her. Don’t let anyone interrupt."

Ethan wanted to argue. The bond between them was screaming warning. But Selena’s eyes left no room for debate.

"Fine." He exhaled. "But if you’re not out in 10 minutes, I’m breaking that door down."

Selena gave a small smirk. "You won’t need to."

She pushed the door open. It groaned on old hinges.

Inside was a circular arena. Chains covered the floor. The ceiling stretched 10 meters high. And in the center stood Whip Woman.

Lady Mara.

She was healing. The wound on her shoulder from yesterday was already closing, black energy crawling over the skin.

She turned slowly. Red eyes found Selena.

"Well, well." Mara cracked her whip. _CRACK_ The sound echoed. "The little Infected comes alone to die?"

Selena drew her katana. The blade sang. "I came to take what’s yours."

Mara laughed, low and cruel. "Bold. I like that. What’s your name, girl?"

"Selena Voss."

"I’m Lady Mara." She spun the whip around her wrist. "And I haven’t tasted Infected blood in months."

The door slammed shut behind Selena with a heavy thud.

---

*THE FIGHT*

Mara didn’t wait. The whip shot out like a black snake.

Selena raised her arm. A translucent shield of blood formed and took the hit. The impact threw her back a step.

"Fast." Mara tilted her head. "Let’s see how fast."

Another crack. Then another. Then three in a row.

Selena moved. Dodged left, rolled right, deflected with the flat of her blade. Each strike sent vibrations through the floor.

She tried to reach into Mara’s mind. `[BLOOD DOMINION]`

For a second Mara’s eyes glazed... then cleared. She laughed.

"That trick doesn’t work on me, sweetheart."

The whip wrapped around a pillar and yanked Mara forward. Her boot slammed into Selena’s side.

Selena hit the chains hard. Air left her lungs. She tasted copper.

"Is that all the Bonded pair has?" Mara walked forward, slow. "I expected more."

Outside the door, Ethan felt it. The pain. The humiliation.

He slammed his fist against the iron. "SELENA!"

"Don’t!" Lily grabbed his sleeve. "She said no one can go in!"

Ethan clenched his teeth. "Just hold on."

---

Inside.

Selena pushed herself up. Blood on her lip. "You talk too much."

She sheathed her katana. Then drew it in one smooth motion.

The world narrowed. She could see it now — the tension in Mara’s wrist before the whip moved.

Crack.

Selena stepped aside.

Crack.

She ducked under.

Crack.

She blocked.

They circled each other. Blade against whip. Speed against reach.

Mara grinned. "Getting better."

Her whip ignited. Black flames licked along the length.

`[BLACK WHIP: IGNITED]`

She swung in a wide arc. Fire spread across the floor, cutting off escape routes.

Selena jumped back. The heat was brutal.

"Let’s see you dodge this!" Mara lashed out five times in rapid succession.

Selena blocked the first with her shield.

Dodged the second.

Cut the third mid-air — it reformed instantly.

The fourth clipped her shoulder. Pain flared as the fire burned through her jacket.

The fifth came for her head.

Selena didn’t run.

She stepped forward.

She caught the burning whip with her bare hand. The fire devoured her skin. The smell of burning flesh filled the arena.

But her other hand moved.

Her katana drove straight through Mara’s chest.

Mara’s eyes went wide. "You... insane..."

Selena twisted the blade and pulled it free. "The key."

Mara coughed, black blood on her lips. Then she laughed. "Tough. I’ll give you that."

With shaking fingers she pulled a heavy black iron key from her belt and pressed it into Selena’s burned palm.

"One down... two to go..." she whispered.

Then she collapsed.

The flames died. Silence filled the arena except for Selena’s heavy breathing.

The door opened.

Ethan was there in an instant. "Selena!"

She was on one knee, cradling her burned hand. But she was smiling.

"Told you it was mine." She held up the key.

Ethan’s expression softened. He lifted her carefully. "You’re hurt."

"It’ll heal." She leaned against him for a second. Just a second. "First key is ours."

Lily ran in and hugged Selena’s leg. "Aunty you were amazing!"

Selena ruffled her hair with her good hand. "Thanks, kid."

---

*15 MINUTES LATER*

Back in the main hall they took a moment to breathe. Selena used a few of the crystals they’d collected to heal. The burn on her hand faded to a scar.

Ethan did the same. His cuts closed.

In the center of the platform, a new slot appeared. They placed the black key inside.

It turned with a heavy click.

`[LOCK 1/3 OPENED]`

`[2 LOCKS REMAINING]`

From far below came a grinding sound. Stone on stone.

Winged Boy’s voice drifted up the stairwell. "Nice. But Crystal Man doesn’t hold back like Mara did."

Selena stood. She tested her hand. 90% healed. Good enough. She slung her katana over her back.

She looked at Ethan. "Next one’s yours."

Ethan cracked his knuckles. "Ready."

Lily took both their hands. "Only two more fights?"

"Two more." Selena said. "Then we end this."

She glanced up, as if she could see through the stone to the sky. She could feel the black moon above, pressing down. Stronger than last night.

"We don’t have much time." Ethan said quietly. "Let’s go."

The three of them headed for the next stairwell. Downward. Into the dark.

Behind them, Mara’s body dissolved into black mist. The Cult didn’t leave their dead behind.

Ahead, the sound of grinding crystals grew louder.

Crystal Man was waiting.

  • BLACK MOON APOCALYPSE ..   RED MOON RISING

8:17 PM. Brisbane Radio Tower, Roof. The wind was screaming.Red light painted everything. The sky, the walls, their faces. Above them the moon wasn’t black anymore. It was red. Like a wound in the sky.Ethan could feel it in his chest. A drumbeat that wasn’t his.In front of him, 3 people. The woman with knives. She twirled two curved blades, smiling like this was a game. The man with the staff. Tall. Bald. His staff was black wood and it pulsed with the same red light as the moon. And the old man with no eyes. Bandages over his sockets. But he turned his head like he could see them perfectly.Between them, on a stone pedestal, the Red Shard. It was alive. It grew an inch every few seconds. Veins of light crawled up it and into the sky.Lily was behind Ethan. Her hand on his back. Bro..."I got you." Ethan didn’t look back. "Stay behind me."The old man tilted his head. "You smell like Melbourne. Like broken glass and failure."The woman laughed. "And blood. Lots of blood."The

  • BLACK MOON APOCALYPSE ..   TRAIN TO BRISBANE

*6:00 AM. Train to Brisbane.* The train shook. Not bad. Just enough to remind you it was moving. Ethan sat by the window. Outside was nothing but gray. Burned fields. Broken houses. And far in the distance, smoke. Melbourne was 4 hours behind them now. Lily was asleep on the seat across from him, head on Selena’s lap. Selena was awake. Cleaning her broken katana with a rag. The blade would never be the same but it would cut. The train had 4 cars. First car: engine and 2 soldiers. Second car: them. Third and fourth: empty. Sealed. "How long?" Ethan asked. Selena checked her watch. "14 hours. If the tracks are clear." Ethan nodded. He hadn’t slept well. Every sound made him reach for his knife. The radio on the table crackled. Captain’s voice. "Team Alpha, report." Ethan picked it up. "We’re 200km out of Melbourne. No problems." "Good. Brisbane is quiet. Too quiet. Our people there lost contact 2 days ago." Selena stopped cleaning. "Lost contact?" "Last message said: ‘Th

  • BLACK MOON APOCALYPSE ..   BLUE SKY

10:30 AM. Melbourne Central, Surface. The sun was out. Real sunlight. Not that sick red glow from the last 3 days. It hurt Ethan’s eyes. He hadn’t seen real light in so long he’d forgotten how it felt.Around them, Melbourne was still broken. Buildings with holes. Cars flipped. Ash on the ground. But people were moving. Captain’s soldiers. Medics. Survivors crawling out of shelters. The black moon was still there. But it was small now. Faint. Like someone had smudged it with an eraser.Lily sat on a curb, drinking water too fast. "My stomach hurts.""Drink slow." Selena said. She was sitting next to her, cleaning her katana. Or what was left of it. The blade was chipped in 3 places. "We’ll get food soon."Ethan stood a few feet away. The black journal in his hands. He hadn’t opened it yet. He just stared at the sky."Never thought I’d miss this." He said quietly.Selena looked up. "The sky?""Blue." Ethan said. "I thought it would be red forever."Selena stood and walked to him. She

*7:50 AM. Sewer Level 5, Melbourne.*The heat was the first thing that hit them. Not normal heat. This was wet, heavy, and wrong. Like standing inside an animal. The walls weren’t stone anymore. They pulsed. Black veins ran through pink, fleshy tissue. The chanting shook the ground. Low. Constant. Words that made your teeth hurt.Lily pressed her face into Ethan’s jacket. "I don’t like this place.""We’re almost done." Ethan said. His voice was rough. He was running on empty after Crystal Man, but he didn’t show it. "Just one more."Selena walked in front, katana ready. Her bandaged hand was tight around the hilt. "Ritual room is through here. I can feel the Shard."The last door was wrong. It wasn’t built. It was grown. Bone and black metal fused together. Carved into it were wings. Hundreds of them, overlapping. There was a panel with 3 keyholes.Selena pulled out the keys. One from Mara. One from Crystal Man. She clicked them in. Click. Click. The door didn’t open. "We need the
