CHAPTER TWENTY THREE

ZOEY

His anger was palpable, simmering beneath the surface like a tightly coiled spring. Despite his fury, he struggled to keep it in check, revealing a hint of restraint in his behaviour.

I had meant what I said earlier – I didn't wish harm upon him. Sure, he was ruthless, but I couldn't shake the feeling that there was more to his story. I was aware of his ongoing feud with whoever was named Mikhail, though the details remained unclear.

"You're driving me crazy," Alexei muttered beside me.

I looked at him, realizing only then that my hand was absentmindedly stroking his arm. Damn it. I quickly withdrew, letting out a curse under my breath.

"Take care of yourself," I advised, standing up to create some distance.

Suddenly, he seized my hands and pulled me back onto his lap, catching me off guard.
