Lyra collapsed to her knees.

Pain ripped through her chest so hard she thought her ribs had cracked open.

The crypt blurred around her. Black stone. Candlelight. Dead kings still kneeling with hollow eyes fixed on her like worshippers before an altar.

And beneath everything—

A heartbeat.

Not hers.

Slow.

Massive.

Ancient.

The voice slid through her skull again.

You found my heart.

“Get out of my head,” Lyra gasped.

The shadows beneath the throne stirred harder.

Cassian reached her first.

His hand closed around her shoulder carefully, like he expected her to shatter beneath his fingers.

“Lyra.”

His voice sounded distant.

Muted.

The heartbeat grew louder.

Boom.

Boom.

Boom.

Each pulse shook the crypt floor slightly.

The guards backed away nervously.

One crossed himself again.

Another whispered, “Gods protect us.”

Lucien moved closer to the pit beneath the throne, silver daggers still dripping black blood from the Hollowed kings.

“Something’s waking up,” he said quietly.

“No,” Cassian replied.

Too late.

The crack beneath the throne widened.

Stone groaned.

Cold air burst upward carrying the smell of old graves and seawater.

Then hands appeared.

Human hands.

Pale fingers gripping the edge of the pit from below.

The servant screamed.

One of the guards bolted immediately for the stairs.

He never made it.

A shadow shot from the darkness beneath the throne and wrapped around his throat. The man jerked violently off his feet.

His scream cut short with a wet snap.

Blood splashed across the stairs.

Panic detonated through the crypt.

“Move!” Lucien barked.

The remaining guards rushed backward, dragging the terrified servant with them.

Cassian pulled Lyra upright.

“Can you stand?”

“Barely.”

“Good enough.”

Another hand emerged from the pit.

Then another.

Not climbing.

Pulling.

Like something enormous was dragging itself upward beneath the earth.

The dead kings bowed lower.

Their armor shrieked against stone.

“My child,” the voice whispered again.

Closer now.

Softer.

Almost affectionate.

Lyra’s stomach twisted violently.

She knew that voice.

Not from memory.

From blood.

Cassian’s grip tightened around her arm. “We’re leaving.”

The shadows around the pit lashed suddenly outward.

Lucien barely ducked in time as black tendrils smashed through the throne behind him.

Stone exploded.

“Move faster,” he snapped.

The crypt shook again.

Dust rained from the ceiling.

Lyra stumbled as another vision slammed into her mind.

A woman sitting alone inside endless darkness.

Black hair spilling over bone-white skin.

A crown fused directly into her skull.

And in her chest—

A hole.

Empty.

Waiting.

Lyra gasped sharply.

The woman smiled.

You carry what was stolen from me.

The vision shattered.

Cassian caught her before she hit the floor.

“Stay with me.”

The words came rougher than usual.

Fear edged them now.

Real fear.

Not for himself.

For her.

That realization hit harder than expected.

Then the floor cracked beneath Lucien.

He cursed as stone collapsed suddenly under one leg. Black hands burst from the darkness below, grabbing for him.

Human hands.

Dead hands.

Lucien drove a dagger through one wrist and kicked free.

“Cassian!”

Cassian shoved Lyra toward the stairs. “Go.”

Lyra stared at him.

“You’re staying?”

“To close the breach.”

“That thing down there just ripped a man apart.”

“Yes.”

“And you think a sword fixes that?”

“No.” His eyes locked onto hers. “But it buys time.”

The crypt trembled violently again.

A low laugh echoed upward from the pit.

Female.

Ancient.

Hungry.

Lyra felt the sound inside her bones.

Cassian stepped toward the throne, sword glowing crimson in the dark now.

The shadows recoiled slightly from the blade.

Interesting.

Lucien noticed too.

His expression tightened.

“Your corruption’s getting worse,” he said quietly.

Cassian ignored him.

That was answer enough.

Lyra frowned.

Corruption?

Before she could ask, the thing beneath the throne moved again.

A face emerged slowly from the darkness.

Not fully human.

Not dead either.

A woman’s face stretched pale beneath dripping black hair.

Beautiful.

Wrong.

Her eyes opened.

Entirely silver.

They locked onto Lyra instantly.

Mine.

The word exploded through Lyra’s skull hard enough to make her scream.

Shadow burst violently from her body.

The crypt lights died all at once.

Darkness swallowed everything.

For one horrifying second, Lyra felt something inside her answer back.

Not fear.

Recognition.

The shadows surged toward the woman beneath the throne—

Then Cassian grabbed Lyra’s face sharply with one hand.

“Look at me.”

His voice cut through the darkness.

Commanding.

Solid.

Lyra’s wild magic hesitated.

Cassian stepped closer until she could feel his breath against her mouth.

“Stay here,” he said quietly. “Stay with me.”

The shadows slowed.

The woman beneath the throne shrieked.

Not delicate now.

Monstrous.

The dead kings rose all at once.

Lucien swore viciously. “That’s new.”

The corpses turned toward Cassian.

Not Lyra.

Cassian understood first.

“They’re after me.”

One of the dead kings charged.

Cassian cut it down immediately, black blood splashing across the crypt floor.

Another attacked.

Then another.

Lucien joined the fight beside him, daggers flashing silver through the dark.

The brothers moved differently.

Cassian fought like war.

Lucien fought like murder.

And still the dead kings kept rising.

Lyra backed toward the stairs, breathing hard.

The woman beneath the throne kept staring at her.

Silver eyes unblinking.

Waiting.

Then Lyra noticed something horrifying.

The hole in the woman’s chest matched the pain burning beneath her own ribs.

Oh no.

Understanding hit slowly.

Terribly.

The voice earlier.

You found my heart.

Lyra looked down at herself.

At the silver light pulsing beneath her skin.

At the rhythm shaking the crypt floor.

Boom.

Boom.

Boom.

Her blood went cold.

The Hollow Queen’s heart wasn’t hidden beneath the palace.

It was inside her.

Then the woman smiled.

And whispered the words that shattered what little safety Lyra still had left.

“When he dies,” she said softly, eyes sliding toward Cassian, “I will finally be whole again.”

  • BONE CROWN    Chapter 62: The Gate of Hands

No one spoke as the bronze gate drifted inward. The movement was almost gentle. There was no explosion of force, no violent crash. Ancient hinges groaned under a weight they had carried for centuries, and a low, grinding rumble rolled across the chamber until it disappeared into the abyss beneath the bridge. The company stood frozen. The hundreds of handprints covering the gate caught the lantern light, each one pressed into the bronze at a different angle. Some belonged to children. Others were broad enough to have come from giants. Fingertips, palms, even broken nails had been preserved in the metal, as though desperate hands had tried to push the doors shut before time hardened them forever.Lyra couldn't look away."They weren't trying to get in," she murmured. The Guardian's shoulders sagged."No."His voice was barely audible."They were trying to keep it closed."The realization settled over the group like another layer of frost.Astrid stepped onto the bridge first. The stone

The laughter faded, but no one moved. It wasn't fear alone that held them in place. The mountain itself seemed to be listening. Every breath echoed through the tunnel, swallowed by darkness before returning a heartbeat later, thinner and strangely distorted.Cassian slowly pulled his hand away from the wall. The blue symbols had vanished as though they had never existed, leaving nothing but cold stone beneath his fingertips. His palm tingled. It felt as if tiny sparks were still trapped beneath his skin.Lucien broke the silence first."I've officially decided I hate caves."Kaelen didn't look back."You hated caves before they started talking.""I had reasons then. Now I have evidence."A few nervous smiles flickered through the company before disappearing again. Even that brief release eased some of the tension knotting everyone's shoulders. The Guardian lifted the lantern higher and began walking."Stay close," he said quietly. "These roads weren't built for ordinary travelers."Th

  • BONE CROWN    Chapter 60: The Horn Below

The echo of the horn lingered long after the sound itself had faded. It settled deep within the mountain, vibrating through the bedrock until every conversation in the camp died on its own. Snow continued to sweep across the valley in restless curtains, hissing over broken stone and abandoned tracks, but the ordinary sounds of winter suddenly felt small. Beneath them, something had awakened. Everyone could feel it.The Hollow Ones remained kneeling where they had fallen. None of them looked at one another. Their black eyes stayed fixed on the widening fracture with the exhausted dread of people forced to relive a nightmare they had once survived.Lyra stood motionless, the broken fragments of the Bone Crown cradled in her hands. They pulsed with a slow, steady rhythm that matched the memory of the Forge she had seen moments before. The sensation wasn't simply warmth. It felt like a heartbeat answering another heartbeat somewhere beneath the mountain.Cassian noticed the faint silver l

  • BONE CROWN    Chapter 59: The Path Below

The second chain snapped with a sharp metallic crack that rolled through the valley like the tolling of an ancient bell.No one mistook the sound this time.It wasn't thunder echoing through the mountains, nor was it the groan of shifting stone. It carried a purpose that every person present could feel. Something unimaginably old had been holding the world together, and another piece of it had just failed. The pale blue pillar of light continued to pour into the sky, piercing the storm clouds until the falling snow vanished into glittering mist. Instead of warmth, the strange light brought an unnatural cold. Frost spread across the valley floor, coating abandoned campfires and creeping over footprints that had been made only minutes before. The Guardian stood frozen, his face drained of color as he stared at the beam."We've already lost two."Lucien frowned."Two what?"The old man's answer came quietly."Chains."Lucien looked toward the mountain, then back at him."And how many bef

  • BONE CROWN    Chapter 58: The Broken Chain

The sound lingered long after it faded. It wasn't loud anymore. The metallic groan had rolled through the mountain and disappeared into the depths, leaving behind a silence that felt heavier than the noise itself. No one in the valley spoke. Even the wind seemed to have lost its nerve. Then the ground shifted beneath their feet. Not a violent tremor. More like a giant settling into a more comfortable position beneath miles of stone.Snow slipped from the cliffs in soft sheets. The horses, already spooked, pulled frantically at their reins. One broke free and bolted across the valley, vanishing into the storm before anyone could stop it.The Hollow Ones didn't react. They stood motionless, listening.Elian slowly closed her eyes."It wasn't supposed to happen yet."The Guardian's face had gone ashen."How many chains were there?"She answered without opening her eyes."Nine.""And now?""Eight."Lucien rubbed both hands over his face."I don't suppose they repair themselves.""No.""Of

No one spoke after the mountain shook. The fissure stopped just short of Astrid's boots, its jagged edges steaming in the bitter cold. Thin ribbons of black mist seeped from the crack, carrying the same stale smell that had drifted from the fracture in the cliff. It coated the back of Lyra's throat with the taste of damp stone and old graves.Astrid lowered herself into a crouch and touched the edge of the split earth with two fingers. The rock was warm. She jerked her hand back immediately."It shouldn't be."The Guardian nodded grimly."It isn't."Another dull impact rolled through the mountain. This one was softer, as though whatever lay beneath the peaks had stepped farther away rather than closer.Or perhaps it had simply become more patient.Cassian couldn't stop staring at the fissure. The veins beneath his skin pulsed with the same slow rhythm, each beat sending a sharp ache through his ribs. It no longer felt like pain alone. It felt like recognition.Something below knew he
