Clara Carroll was crying in the bathroom when it felt like her future was slipping away.

It wasn’t a good moment.

She pressed her forehead against the cold tiled wall and whispered, “Please, God… just this once. Let me get through today.”

Outside, students moved quickly through the halls at the University of Maryland, College Park. Laughter drifted in. Shoes clicked against the floor. Voices rose and fell, full of confidence. Everyone seemed excited, like they were moving forward.

Everyone except Clara.

She wiped her face and looked at herself in the cracked mirror.

Tired eyes. Dry lips. A faded blue blouse she had worn too many times.

She didn’t look like a final-year student about to present. She looked worn out.

Her phone buzzed. A message from her mother.

“My sunshine, are you okay? Don’t forget your presentation today. I’m praying for you.”

Clara gave a small, tired smile. She didn’t believe in herself anymore.

Her mother had been up since four that morning, cleaning office floors in downtown Silver Spring, yet she still found time to check on her.

Clara typed back, “I’ll do my best, Mama.”

She slipped her phone into her bag and took a deep breath.

This wasn’t just another day. It was her final project presentation. If she failed, she wouldn’t graduate. And if she didn’t graduate, four years of struggle would mean nothing.

Across campus, beyond what anyone could see, something else was watching.

A thin silver light hovered above the maple trees. Inside it stood a figure.

He looked young, but not tied to any age. His form shimmered, like mist in the early morning.

His name was Shomer.

He knelt, head bowed, as if he were breathing hard, even though angels didn’t need to breathe. Still, he felt weak.

Very weak.

In front of him floated a glowing image of Clara, walking slowly toward the lecture hall. Her shoulders were low. Her heart was heavy. And somehow, that weakened him.

“Happiness strengthens the bond,” he murmured, remembering Costus’s words. “And she’s afraid.”

He closed his eyes. Light spread from his chest.

“Don’t fall,” he whispered. “Not today.”

Clara entered the lecture hall fifteen minutes early. It was already half full. Large screens hung on the walls, and a projector hummed softly. Professors stood at the front, talking quietly.

Her classmates looked ready. Some were going over notes. Some were laughing. Others practiced under their breath.

Clara sat in the back.

Her laptop felt heavier than usual. She opened it.

Nothing.

She pressed the power button again.

Still nothing.

Her heart dropped. “I knew it,” she whispered.

“No… no, please.”

She tried again. The screen stayed black. She removed the battery and fixed it back in place.

Still nothing.

Her hands started to shake.

Everything was on that laptop. Four months of work. Research, drafts, notes, sleepless nights… everything.

“Not today,” she whispered. “Please… not today.”

A student beside her glanced at her, then looked away. No one noticed. No one cared.

In the unseen realm, Shomer’s eyes snapped open.

He saw the dead screen. He felt her fear hit him like a wave.

“System failure,” he said quietly. “Battery drained. Memory unstable.”

He reached toward her world. Light flowed from his hand, but it flickered.

“I’m too weak…” he muttered. “If I fail now, she falls.”

He rose slowly into the air. Silver symbols circled him. Ancient words formed on his lips.

“Revita.”

His body shook. Then a crack of light split through the air.

Pain followed. Sharp and deep.

But he held on.

Back in the lecture hall, Clara stared at her laptop.

The screen flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then it came on.

Her desktop appeared.

All her files were there.

She froze. “What…?”

She touched the screen. It was real.

It was working.

Her breath caught. “Thank you…”

Tears filled her eyes. She didn’t know who she was thanking.

She just knew something had saved her.

Shomer dropped to one knee. His light dimmed. His wings, once bright, now looked thin and weak.

“Connection restored,” he whispered. “But it cost me.”

Far above him, in a higher realm, golden pillars stood tall.

A figure watched.

Costus.

His expression didn’t change. “Shomer is pushing too far,” he said quietly.

“Next presenter,” the professor called. “Clara Carroll.”

Clara’s heart jumped.

She stood. Her legs felt weak, but she walked forward anyway. Each step felt unreal.

She connected her laptop. Her slides appeared perfectly.

She swallowed.

Then she started.

At first, her voice shook. Then it steadied. Her thoughts became clear. Her confidence grew.

For twenty minutes, nothing else mattered. Not the struggle. Not the fear. Not the doubts.

Just her work.

The professors leaned in. The students listened.

When she finished, the room went quiet.

Then applause broke out. Loud. Real.

Her professor smiled. “Excellent work, Miss Carroll.”

Relief hit her all at once.

That night, she lay on her small bed, staring at the ceiling.

“I don’t understand,” she whispered. “My laptop was dead.”

She hugged her pillow.

“But somehow… it worked.”

A small smile touched her lips. “Maybe someone is watching over me.”

In the unseen realm, Shomer looked at her.

“Yes,” he whispered. “I am.”

Then he coughed. Light spilled from his lips. His body shook.

Costus turned away. “Call the council,” he said. “Something is going wrong.”

Clara drifted off to sleep, unaware. Safe, for now.

But her life was starting to change.

Above her room, the air split open.

A thin line of silver light appeared.

And from it, a voice whispered,

“Her fate has begun.”

  • BOUND BY LIGHT AND FLESH   Chapter 10: Lines that Shouldn't Cross

The most dangerous lies are the ones no one says out loud.Clara didn’t go back to sleep. Not after the message. Not after the voice. Not after whatever had been in her apartment, speaking like it knew both of them. She sat on the couch, knees pulled in, staring at her phone like it might light up again.Alex stood nearby, still and alert.Watching everything without looking like he was watching anything.“You can sit,” she said quietly.“I’m fine.”“You’ve been standing for ten minutes.”“I know.”She studied him.Something about him felt off. Not obvious. Not dramatic. Just… different.Like he didn’t move quite right. Didn’t breathe the way other people did. Didn’t react the way people should.“You don’t seem scared,” she said.A small pause.“I am.”“You don’t look it.”He met her eyes.“I’ve learned not to show it.”That answer hung in the air.Heavy. Incomplete.Outside, the sky slowly shifted from black to gray.Morning was coming.Clara hadn’t noticed how long they’d been sitti

  • BOUND BY LIGHT AND FLESH   Chapter 9: The Watching shadow

Some dangers don’t rush in.They watch first. Learn you. Wait until there’s nowhere left to run.Clara didn’t sleep that night. She lay on her back, staring at the ceiling, replaying the words again and again. You were never the target. It didn’t sound like a threat. That was what bothered her.It sounded… corrective. Like someone pointing out she had misunderstood something. That unsettled her more than fear would have.At 3:17 a.m., her phone lit up.No sound. No vibration.Just light.Clara turned her head slowly. The screen glowed in the dark.Unknown number. She didn’t move. Didn’t reach for it. Barely breathed. Then the light went out.Silence filled the room again. But something had changed. The air didn’t feel empty anymore.Across the city, Alex sat up in bed at the same moment. His eyes snapped open. His chest tightened. No sound. No clear reason.Just a sharp pull inside him. Like something had yanked a thread too hard.“Clara,” he said under his breath. The name came easil

  • BOUND BY LIGHT AND FLESH   Chapter 8: Fracture Lines

The hardest part about getting your life back is pretending it was never taken from you.Clara stood in front of the Baltimore Crest building for a long time before walking in.Same glass doors, same polished floors, same quiet hum of ambition, but everything felt different. Not because the building had changed, but because she had.Her name had been cleared, her job was reinstated, her apology issued, yet none of that erased the memory of standing in that boardroom, accused and alone. She adjusted her bag on her shoulder and stepped inside. One step, then another. Every movement was deliberate and controlled. The lobby receptionist looked up. There was a flicker of recognition, then a polite smile.“Good morning, Miss Bennett.”Clara nodded. “Good morning.”The words felt heavier than they should have.As she walked toward the elevator, she could feel it.Eyes around her, not obvious, not open, but present.People knew. Of course they knew. Stories travelled faster than truth.Inside

  • BOUND BY LIGHT AND FLESH   Chapter 7: Echoes of Truth

Truth doesn’t disappear. It just waits. It can be buried, twisted, or edited, but it always finds its way back.Clara didn’t think much about Alex after the café. Not at first. She had job applications to send, bills to sort out, and hopes she was trying not to get too attached to.But later that night, lying awake and staring at the ceiling, his face came back to her.Not because he was handsome, but because he looked out of place. Like someone dropped into a story halfway through. She knew that feeling.Across the city, Alex sat on the edge of a narrow bed in a small rented room.Everything felt heavy. Too real. His breathing was uneven, like he wasn’t used to it yet.His memories came in flashes.A chamber. A voice calling him unstable. Clara’s name echoing. He pressed his hands to his head.“I chose this,” he whispered. It felt true, even if he didn’t know why.He stood and walked to the mirror. The reflection caught him off guard.Human. Tired. Limited. He moved his fingers slowl

  • BOUND BY LIGHT AND FLESH   Chapter 6: Weak Wings

The first thing Shomer felt was weight. Not emotion. Not pressure from the bond. Real weight. It dragged at him, pressed against what used to be his wings. For the first time, he felt something like gravity. In the celestial chamber, the light dimmed slightly as he faced the Council.Costus stood before him, vast and unshaken.“You have grown unstable,” Costus said.Shomer lowered his head. “She is innocent.”“That is not in question.”“Then why am I being restrained?”“Because you are interfering.”The words landed hard.Shomer looked up. “I’ve stayed within my limits.”Vigilis stepped forward. “You’ve stretched them.”“I protected her.”“You were assigned to guard,” Lumen said gently, “not to change outcomes.”Far below, something trembled through the bond.Clara’s silence.Shomer felt it again. That quiet exhaustion. The moment she chose not to pray. It wasn’t defiance. It was emptiness.“She’s breaking,” he said.“All humans break,” Costus replied.“Not like this.”There was a pau

  • BOUND BY LIGHT AND FLESH   Chapter 5: The Silent Trap

The trap never looked like one. That was what made it effective. It showed up as an opportunity, sounded like good news, and felt like an answered prayer.Clara accepted it without hesitation. Two weeks after her interview, the official offer arrived.Baltimore Crest Marketing Firm — Junior Marketing Analyst. She read the email over and over until the words blurred. Her hands started shaking.“Mama!” she called, rushing into the kitchen.Beatrice turned from the stove, spoon in hand. “What is it?”“I got the job. It’s official.”For a moment, Beatrice just stood there. Then tears filled her eyes. They embraced tightly, laughing and crying at the same time. That night, Beatrice cooked jollof rice with chicken. Not because it was easy, but because moments like this deserved something special. Hope itself felt worth it.Above them, Shomer watched.“She’s rising,” he whispered. But his light flickered slightly. He could feel it now. Resistance. Invisible tension pulling at the path ahead.
