Chapter 4: Cracks in the Light

The first crack appeared where no one could see it.

It didn’t make a sound. No glass shattered. No alarm rang. It just flickered.

Clara noticed it on a rainy Monday morning at the bus stop, umbrella in one hand, folder in the other.

Her phone blinked, went black, then came back on.

Blink. Freeze. Black.

She frowned. “That’s strange.”

Battery ninety-two percent. Signal full. Everything should have been normal.

Except it wasn’t. She tapped the screen. Nothing. Then suddenly, it lit up again.

She exhaled. “Maybe I’m just tired.”

She had been saying that a lot lately.

Ever since graduation. Ever since hope started feeling fragile instead of bright.

Rain ran off the bus, forming slow streams along the metal. The air smelled of wet pavement and diesel.

Clara stared at her reflection in the dark screen. She looked thinner, more alert, as if expecting disaster.

Across the street, traffic lights flickered, then steadied. She didn’t notice.

Above her, hidden in the mist, Shomer hovered. His edges wavered. Rain passed through him like smoke.

“Stability dropping,” he murmured.

He tried to straighten his wings, but they thinned instead. Since the council meeting, the pressure had been constant, invisible, binding.

The bond between guardian and human was supposed to flow freely. Now it strained, and something else pressed in.

He felt watched. Not by Costus, but by something closer, darker.

Clara’s interview in Baltimore was set for noon. She arrived twenty minutes early.

Her mother’s voice echoed in her head: If you’re on time, you’re late. If you’re early, you’re prepared.

She sat in the reception area, knees together, folder on her lap. Glass walls, neutral art, faint polish scent.

She rehearsed silently: I am hardworking. I adapt quickly. I believe in growth.

Her palms were damp.

The elevator doors opened. Lydia stepped out—sunglasses, heels, calm. She wasn’t supposed to be there.

She spotted Clara and smiled. Not warmly. Strategically.

“She doesn’t even know how lucky she is,” Lydia whispered to herself.

In the spiritual realm, Vigilis appeared beside Shomer.

“You are flickering,” the Watcher said quietly.

“I can manage,” Shomer replied.

“You are tethered too tightly.”

“She needs stability,” Shomer said.

“And you need restraint.”

Shomer didn’t argue. The Watcher was right.

The interview went better than Clara expected.

The manager nodded, smiled at her portfolio, asked thoughtful questions.

She answered clearly, confidently.

By the time she stepped outside into the gray afternoon, she felt lighter.

She texted her mother.

Clara: I think it went well!

Beatrice: God is with you.

Clara pressed the phone to her chest. Gratitude warmed her.

Unseen, someone watched from across the street.

That evening, an email arrived: Provisional Acceptance.

Clara read it again and again.

She screamed. “Mama!”

Beatrice rushed in. “What happened?”

“I got it!”

They hugged, laughed, cried, and danced barefoot in the kitchen.

Hope returned like sunlight breaking through clouds.

Across town, Lydia stared at Clara’s post: Blessed beyond words.

“She doesn’t even know how to struggle,” she muttered. “I did everything right.”

Her phone buzzed. A message from her supervisor at GreenWay Mart: We are reviewing staff placements. Transfers are possible.

Cold formed behind her eyes.

A plan. Patient. Precise. Dangerous.

Above Clara, Shomer stiffened.

A ripple moved through the air. Not joy. Not despair. Intent.

“Malice,” he whispered. He tried to trace it, but static clouded his vision.

For the first time since her childhood, he couldn’t see clearly around her.

“Who is interfering?” he breathed. No answer came.

That night, Clara dreamed.

She stood on glass. Light stretched endlessly around her.

The glass cracked beneath her feet. Thin lines spread outward. Darkness moved beneath the surface, alive, waiting.

She reached out instinctively. “Help me.”

The light flickered. No one answered.

Then she fell.

She woke, heart pounding. Her phone lay silent on the nightstand. She reached for it. The screen flickered once, then steadied.

Something felt wrong, but she didn’t know what.

In the higher realm, Costus watched. Expressionless.

“Phase one has begun,” he said.

Lumen’s glow dimmed slightly. “Must she suffer first?”

“Yes.” Vigilis stayed silent. Suffering reveals weakness. Weakness reveals choice.

Across the city, Lydia sat at her laptop.

A company portal glowed.

She typed deliberately: Clara Bennett’s Employee File.

A notification appeared: Access Granted.

In the faint reflection of her screen, her smile didn’t look entirely human.

  • BOUND BY LIGHT AND FLESH   Chapter 10: Lines that Shouldn't Cross

The most dangerous lies are the ones no one says out loud.Clara didn’t go back to sleep. Not after the message. Not after the voice. Not after whatever had been in her apartment, speaking like it knew both of them. She sat on the couch, knees pulled in, staring at her phone like it might light up again.Alex stood nearby, still and alert.Watching everything without looking like he was watching anything.“You can sit,” she said quietly.“I’m fine.”“You’ve been standing for ten minutes.”“I know.”She studied him.Something about him felt off. Not obvious. Not dramatic. Just… different.Like he didn’t move quite right. Didn’t breathe the way other people did. Didn’t react the way people should.“You don’t seem scared,” she said.A small pause.“I am.”“You don’t look it.”He met her eyes.“I’ve learned not to show it.”That answer hung in the air.Heavy. Incomplete.Outside, the sky slowly shifted from black to gray.Morning was coming.Clara hadn’t noticed how long they’d been sitti

  • BOUND BY LIGHT AND FLESH   Chapter 9: The Watching shadow

Some dangers don’t rush in.They watch first. Learn you. Wait until there’s nowhere left to run.Clara didn’t sleep that night. She lay on her back, staring at the ceiling, replaying the words again and again. You were never the target. It didn’t sound like a threat. That was what bothered her.It sounded… corrective. Like someone pointing out she had misunderstood something. That unsettled her more than fear would have.At 3:17 a.m., her phone lit up.No sound. No vibration.Just light.Clara turned her head slowly. The screen glowed in the dark.Unknown number. She didn’t move. Didn’t reach for it. Barely breathed. Then the light went out.Silence filled the room again. But something had changed. The air didn’t feel empty anymore.Across the city, Alex sat up in bed at the same moment. His eyes snapped open. His chest tightened. No sound. No clear reason.Just a sharp pull inside him. Like something had yanked a thread too hard.“Clara,” he said under his breath. The name came easil

  • BOUND BY LIGHT AND FLESH   Chapter 8: Fracture Lines

The hardest part about getting your life back is pretending it was never taken from you.Clara stood in front of the Baltimore Crest building for a long time before walking in.Same glass doors, same polished floors, same quiet hum of ambition, but everything felt different. Not because the building had changed, but because she had.Her name had been cleared, her job was reinstated, her apology issued, yet none of that erased the memory of standing in that boardroom, accused and alone. She adjusted her bag on her shoulder and stepped inside. One step, then another. Every movement was deliberate and controlled. The lobby receptionist looked up. There was a flicker of recognition, then a polite smile.“Good morning, Miss Bennett.”Clara nodded. “Good morning.”The words felt heavier than they should have.As she walked toward the elevator, she could feel it.Eyes around her, not obvious, not open, but present.People knew. Of course they knew. Stories travelled faster than truth.Inside

  • BOUND BY LIGHT AND FLESH   Chapter 7: Echoes of Truth

Truth doesn’t disappear. It just waits. It can be buried, twisted, or edited, but it always finds its way back.Clara didn’t think much about Alex after the café. Not at first. She had job applications to send, bills to sort out, and hopes she was trying not to get too attached to.But later that night, lying awake and staring at the ceiling, his face came back to her.Not because he was handsome, but because he looked out of place. Like someone dropped into a story halfway through. She knew that feeling.Across the city, Alex sat on the edge of a narrow bed in a small rented room.Everything felt heavy. Too real. His breathing was uneven, like he wasn’t used to it yet.His memories came in flashes.A chamber. A voice calling him unstable. Clara’s name echoing. He pressed his hands to his head.“I chose this,” he whispered. It felt true, even if he didn’t know why.He stood and walked to the mirror. The reflection caught him off guard.Human. Tired. Limited. He moved his fingers slowl

  • BOUND BY LIGHT AND FLESH   Chapter 6: Weak Wings

The first thing Shomer felt was weight. Not emotion. Not pressure from the bond. Real weight. It dragged at him, pressed against what used to be his wings. For the first time, he felt something like gravity. In the celestial chamber, the light dimmed slightly as he faced the Council.Costus stood before him, vast and unshaken.“You have grown unstable,” Costus said.Shomer lowered his head. “She is innocent.”“That is not in question.”“Then why am I being restrained?”“Because you are interfering.”The words landed hard.Shomer looked up. “I’ve stayed within my limits.”Vigilis stepped forward. “You’ve stretched them.”“I protected her.”“You were assigned to guard,” Lumen said gently, “not to change outcomes.”Far below, something trembled through the bond.Clara’s silence.Shomer felt it again. That quiet exhaustion. The moment she chose not to pray. It wasn’t defiance. It was emptiness.“She’s breaking,” he said.“All humans break,” Costus replied.“Not like this.”There was a pau

  • BOUND BY LIGHT AND FLESH   Chapter 5: The Silent Trap

The trap never looked like one. That was what made it effective. It showed up as an opportunity, sounded like good news, and felt like an answered prayer.Clara accepted it without hesitation. Two weeks after her interview, the official offer arrived.Baltimore Crest Marketing Firm — Junior Marketing Analyst. She read the email over and over until the words blurred. Her hands started shaking.“Mama!” she called, rushing into the kitchen.Beatrice turned from the stove, spoon in hand. “What is it?”“I got the job. It’s official.”For a moment, Beatrice just stood there. Then tears filled her eyes. They embraced tightly, laughing and crying at the same time. That night, Beatrice cooked jollof rice with chicken. Not because it was easy, but because moments like this deserved something special. Hope itself felt worth it.Above them, Shomer watched.“She’s rising,” he whispered. But his light flickered slightly. He could feel it now. Resistance. Invisible tension pulling at the path ahead.
