Mia’s pov

Jonathan had already walked into the house by the time I returned and he paused as he saw me. For a split second, it just felt as if he recognized me but then his hoarse voice pulled my head out of that thought.

“What are you doing?” He snarled, looking around me for any hint of mischief.

“Nothing. Just getting familiar with the house..” I said and he stared at me for a few more seconds before walking away.

I returned to my room, my heart pressing against the walls of my chest. What if he walked in on me rummaging through his study? He’d have me killed even before I got the chance to end him myself.

But why are there more cameras on this side of the house than any other part of the mansion? Did he already suspect me even before agreeing to the marriage?

All the questions in my head needed answers but I couldn’t get any, so I took my shoes off and crawled into my bed. The cold air rushed in through the open window and grazed my shoulders.

I felt my throat burning as memories of Sophia came flooding back. When I used to be in love.. the days when I had dreams. Big dreams of running as far away from my father as possible. Where I’d start a brand new life with the one I loved… Jonathan.

The night after he told me how unworthy and unfit I was to be his wife, was the night Sophia died. My father’s forced surgery was just the funeral.

I took a deep breath and sat up on the bed, wiping my face with the back of my hand. Just as my mind kept drifting, an almost inaudible knock sliced through the silence.

“Come in!” I ordered. The hinges creaked softly and the door pushed open, Lydia walked in holding a little tray containing a folded envelope.

“Mr. Mysterio sent this over.” She said and I got down from the bed to pick it up.

“Thank you..” I muttered without lifting my head from the envelope. The door slammed shut and I sat in front of my dressing mirror, tearing the envelope apart to see the content.

“…heartily invites you to her golden jubilee..” I muttered softly.

What stopped him from giving me this when he saw me earlier?

I smacked my lips and placed the card on the table, dragging my legs back to the bed. Barely five minutes later, another knock came. This time, louder and firmer than Lydia’s.

I walked to the door and pulled it open, outside stood a young lady with a stern face.

“Mr. Mysterio has orders for a change of wardrobe..” she started and I rolled my eyes.

“You’re mistaken darling, his side of the house is to the right. Mr. Mysterio doesn’t stay in this part of the house..” I explained and turned to leave but she held the door.

“The change isn’t for the boss… it’s for his wife. And I believe you’re the one..”

I stared at her for a while and slowly stepped aside.

“If you’d please walk with me to the living room, we need to take your measurements.” She requested. I shut my door and followed her into the living room, it was already packed with racks of dresses and women in uniforms folding more clothes into boxes.

Upstairs, Jonathan lurked around the railings, hovering like a hawk.

I stood in the center of the living room as the lady took my measurements.

“Spread your arms..” she ordered softly. This went on for a while and slowly, I eased into it.

When I finally sat and watched the uniformed ladies display the clothes, I couldn’t help but admire the uniqueness of the designs.

My phone vibrated on my lap and I stared down at it. I barely got any messages on my phone and when I did, it was usually Collins. I hesitated at first and finally picked it up.

The timeframe he gave me hasn’t elapsed so what was he texting me again for? As I stared at the message, the world paused for a second.

Before I could process the text, a call came in from the unsaved number. Collins.

My thumb hovered over the accept button and my heart pounded in my ears. I could guess why he was calling.. probably to confirm the text I just received.

But then I remembered Jonathan was watching, so I declined the call and turned my phone face down on my lap again.

I repeated the message in my head and the clothes didn’t interest me anymore.

“Uhhm.. let me leave you all to do your thing… I need some rest.” I said to the head and she tipped her head a little to the left.

“But ma’am, we’re only getting started. You haven't seen our best designs yet and you still haven’t decided which ones you’re picking..” she insisted.

I stared at each rack one after the other, trying to come up with something fast.

“Make use of your expertise and do the selection on my behalf. You’ve seen me, you know what I’d like. The rest is up to you..” I ordered and she nodded reluctantly.

“Or… matter of fact, I don’t trust anyone’s judgement. You probably know nothing past your uniforms. I’ll take it all, thank you..”

I turned and walked back to my room. I looked up and my eyes met with Jonathan’s. The way he stared at me made me feel as though he read the text message from all the way up there. But that’s near impossible.

He slowly looked away and disappeared from sight while I hastened to mine.

After making sure the door was latched, I opened my phone and dialed the unsaved number again but it didn’t connect. I guess I can’t call him but he can.

So I tossed the phone on the bed and buried my face in my palms.

“Change of plans. The order to kill will come sooner than you think.”

The message was that simple and it made me panic. I only had less than 24 hours left to get the passwords and the files Collins asked me to get, and now I’d have to start worrying about how soon I’d be asked to end him.

“Ughhh!”

I ran a hand through my hair, letting out a soft breath.

Jonathan After an eternity of going back and forth with my contractors, I was able to come to an agreement and the deal was sealed. Feeling relieved, I got into my car and drove straight home. For some odd reason, I just had this unsettling feeling in my chest. But I brushed it off, replacing it with the pending collaboration I’m yet to sign. The CEO of the company has me on a chokehold with his really interesting business idea. I can’t shake off the idea of being a part of such a great project. But at the same time, there’s this little voice asking me not to rush in for now. In my experience, it’s better to listen to that little voice than the louder one. As I pulled over in my garage, I noticed a car was missing. The only other person who drove that car was Mia. “Where’d she go?” I muttered under my breath as I locked my car and strolled into the main house. Everywhere was weirdly quiet, except the low humming of the ac. Even the staff had retired for the night already. I was

MiaWhile others woke up beside the love of their lives, I woke up to a throbbing headache and nausea. My head spun around in scattered circles as I tried to keep my eyes open but not only did it make my stomach churn, the heavy throbs in my head persisted even more. My door creaked open without a prior knock but I couldn’t lift my eyes to see who it was. “Ma’am… you’re awake already.” I knew that voice. It was Lydia. “Please whatever it is you came for, if it’s not going to be a remedy to my problem right now I’d rather you not bother me with it..” I nagged as my face dug deeper into my sheets. I heard the clatter of cups and her footsteps approached my bed. “Mr. Jonathan actually asked me to hand you this..” Lydia responded, holding out a card of pills. “They’re pills for your hangover. He believes you’re going to have a terrible headache because of how much alcohol you consumed last night..” I managed to lift my head fully Lydia placed the glass of water in my other hand. “

  • BOUND TO KILL, BOUND TO LOVE    CHAPTER 43

Jonathan The evening stretched into the darkness of the night and as the party progressed, I sat back in my chair, still trying to gather my thoughts. Mia on the other hand was having a thrill. She blended so well with the other guests and each time my eyes found her, she had a different champagne flute in her hand. Leaning back on my chair, I watched her from a distance, my wine glass barely touched on the table. She looked so harmless…. So naive and oblivious of the things around her. But that’s what I used to think. Now after seeing that gun in her possession and the many things about her that just didn’t add up, my perception of her has changed. On the seat she was once sitting on, her purse buzzed and drew my attention to it. I stared at the black purse and waited for the sound again. It came a few seconds later and this time, it lasted longer than the previous one. I took a sip of my drink and leaned over to pick the purse up. The phone inside chimed nonstop and curiosity

  • BOUND TO KILL, BOUND TO LOVE    CHAPTER 42

Jonathan I returned to my room, sank into my chair and pulled open my laptop. No matter how much I tried to convince myself that the man I saw Mia with that night didn’t matter, I just could shake off the thought of someone else ruining something I’ve built just because my supposed wife can’t control herself. My fingers typed fast and my eyes scanned the screen, I dug deeper into Mia’s life to see the friends she had, maybe I would somehow stumble on something interesting. But as I scrolled further down, I noticed something wasn’t adding up about her life. She had no social media life beyond the start of this year. Everything about her only started early this year, as though she had no life before then. “Maybe her sisters might be of good use..” I muttered in a low voice as I jumped over to the older one’s account. But nothing changed here. Martha only started posting about her this year alone, same thing with Clara. I slowly sat up on my chair, my fingers caressing my chin as I

Mia“Aren’t you supposed to be at work today?” I muttered, mouth half full with food. “It’s my company, I choose when to be there and when not to be. Besides, everyone and their grandma can see that it’s clearly going to rain cats and dogs today. I’m not in the mood to drive through a storm..” he shot back, rubbing his temple slightly. “In my defense, I haven’t checked the weather forecast for today and I certainly haven’t looked outside my window..” I nagged as I wiped the corners of my mouth with a paper towel. “How’s the new contract..” I asked shortly after pushing my empty plate further away. Jonathan glanced at me through the corner of his eyes, probably wondering why I changed the topic from what he asked me. He inhaled slowly and let the air go through his mouth, folding his arms around his knees. “Well, it’s going alright. There’s more progress than the board thought there’d be..” he replied, a proud smirk sitting on the edge of his lips. “Good to know. It was my idea t

  • BOUND TO KILL, BOUND TO LOVE    CHAPTER 40

MiaAs the sun woke up, I tossed around on the bed and pulled my sheets over my face. But something unfamiliar hit me. These sheets smelled nothing like mine, and they felt even thicker. I slowly opened my eyes and the expensive oak wood greeted me. My brain jolted awake fully as I looked around, sitting up on the bed to make sure I wasn’t just imagining things. “What am I doing in Jonathan’s room?” I muttered to myself. Then I realized I was naked… not even a single piece of clothing was on my body!I picked up my pillow and screamed into it as loudly as possible because everything that happened last night flooded back into my head. I still felt Jonathan’s arms around me, as though I were still basking in his warmth. The room was empty and I took the opportunity to jump down from the bed to grab my robe. “Where did I toss it?” I muttered to myself. I searched around, cold morning air grazing my bare body but my robe was nowhere in sight. I heard footsteps approaching and immedia
