Alina’s POV

The water ceased with a hollow clunk as I turned the shower knob. My hand lingered under the cooling droplets for a second longer, like I needed them to rinse off more than just the lather. My thoughts were no longer clouded by heat, but they weren’t any clearer either.

A strange pressure coiled in my chest as I pushed the glass door open and stepped out into the bathroom.

The air smelled faintly of soap and something warmer… deeper. Musky.

My nose twitched.

Wait.

I turned slightly, narrowing my eyes at the edge of the air. That scent wasn’t mine. It wasn’t even the mint-scented soap I used.

It was him.

Lucian.

Was he here?

I turned, scanning the space with a quiet dread crawling up my spine. The bathroom door was ajar. Not flung open. Not even halfway. But open enough that someone could’ve stood there. Watching. Breathing.

My jaw tensed.

Or maybe it’s just the after-smell of him. This place had been his long before I barged into it. Maybe the walls still carried his scen

Lucian's POVAlina left her meal half-finished, barely nibbling at the soft pie the maids had fussed over this morning. I bet she had lost her appetite, and I didn’t have to guess who was to blame. My gaze followed her as she stood up quietly. No words. Just a simple nod when I told her, “Go get ready. Training starts at exactly noon.”She didn’t protest. Just walked away, head slightly down, like she had already braced herself for another session of misery. The soft sound of her footsteps faded into the stairwell. Then Cade’s voice cut through the silence like a blade through fog. “The training. You really want to train her?”I leaned back, picked at a crumb on my plate. My tone was firm. “What? You know I can't tolerate weakness. She has to be strong to awaken her wolf. You know that better than anyone.”He said nothing for a moment, just looked at me like he could see straight through the smoke screen I was crafting. Then he finally asked, “Is everything you're doing with Alina… j

I could tell she was very upset. But honestly, I didn't care. Not at the moment. Everything I said to Cade was calculated, served deliberately to get under his skin. Alina just happened to be within range. I knew I’d regret it later, but at that point, all that mattered was watching Cade’s face contort with irritation.I shifted my eyes to him. He had stopped at the door, his frame rigid as he stared at us. I continued eating, feigning ignorance, chewing slowly, even though the taste of the meal had long since faded from my tongue. Then, just for the fun of it, I let my hand glide under the table and reached for Alina's thigh again. I wanted Cade to see. To believe whatever twisted conclusion his mind might draw.Big mistake. Her heel met the top of my foot under the table. Hard.I groaned quietly, my hand snapping away like I’d touched fire. My lips twitched, more from the effort of not cursing than anything else. She didn’t even look at me. Just mouthed two cruel words with a triump

Alina's POV As if he wanted to give me a moment of respite, Lucian changed the topic. His voice rolled across the table like thunder pretending to be a whisper. Smooth, clipped, dominant."The Alpha of the South border is hesitant to push for the mineral mine rights. He thinks the east might intervene. But he knows better than to challenge our territory."He spoke with the same ease someone would use to spread butter on toast, but every syllable was layered in calculated threat. It was typical of him, he talked about territory like one would talk about chess pieces, and he moved people just the same.I could barely focus. Not with his palm still resting on my thigh, his thumb moving in lazy, slow strokes that sent confusing ripples across my entire body. I shifted slightly, hoping he'd take the hint, but that only made him press firmer."You know I could help speak to Alpha Darrien," Cade said, tone offering but firm. "He listens to me."Lucian didn’t even glance at him. “I don’t nee

Alina's POVLucian's h fingers fell on my thighs. I thought it was a mistake at first until it stayed there for more than a few seconds. His fingers never left my thigh, and I was beginning to think he had made a silent vow to torment me with subtle, well-aimed strokes. There was a casual rhythm to the way his thumb pressed circles into my skin, as if he was tuning some invisible instrument only he could hear. And then Cade walked in.The air shifted.Lucian stilled. My breath faltered as Cade stepped fully into the room, his eyes settling on us with a little more weight than necessary. He paused. Not a twitch, not a blink. And then his gaze dropped, to my bare thighs peeking out under Lucian’s oversized shirt.I stiffened.Cade stared a bit too long. That strange, frozen silence stretched between all three of us. I glanced toward Lucian just in time to see it.Possessiveness.Not just in the subtle glare that narrowed his eyes, but in the way his jaw ticked. His hand tightened on my

Lucian’s POVWe stepped into the dining room, the rich scent of roasted herbs and morning spice already soaking into the air. I guided her in with my hand resting lightly on her lower back, just enough to irritate her, not enough to seem intentional.Without a word, I pulled a chair out for her.She blinked at me like I’d grown horns. I smirked.“What? Even devils have manners,” I whispered, lowering her gently into the seat. She narrowed her eyes at me, lips pursed, but said nothing as I rounded the table but didn't take the chair at the head and rather went to sit directly beside her. It was deliberate, close enough to see the twitch of her nose every time I spoke. The table was already set, steaming plates of buttered yam slices, fried eggs laced with green pepper, and baked plantains decorating our silence. The maids stood off to the side, waiting. One of them glanced at me for approval.I met her gaze and gave the slightest nod, the kind that said, Leave before I change my mind.
