The golden steps took forever to climb down, especially with Killian asking me questions like a BBC World News reporter. It was exhausting, like a chore on its own.

"Are you sure you're ok?" He asked for th second time since we left the room.

"Yes, I'm fine. It's just been a really complex few weeks for me. You'd have thought I'd be better at adapting to change."

It was meant to be a joke, but Killian’s brows dove into a frown. He didn't speak until we stepped into the dining room.

"How can yo

The tension grew sickeningly heavy."Fuck. Let me try."I stepped away from the door, allowing him to grip the doorknob. In the dim lighting, his biceps flexed as he pulled. He'd taken off his suit jacket, leaving him in that crisp white shirt that hugged his physique in all the right places."It's jammed shut from the outside. You slammed it too hard!" My arms crossed over my chest, eyes narrowing."Me?! I barely slammed it at all. I didn't want to scare you further. How did you even think to hide here?" His eyes were wide, exasperated. He sighed, not waiting for my response before digging into his pocket."What are you looking for?""My phone. I left it on my desk when I followed you. We're just going to have to wait. Ruth will kill me, yes. But she also knows how to track me down no matter where I am. It's just one of those things she's good at."He leaned back against the wall, sliding down into a sitting position.Listening to him sing Ruth's praises raised another foreign emotio

The grey metal door was shoved open. Killian stood at the post, the harsh light outside framing his body perfectly. "Ella, hey. You don't have to run from me." He stepped in, walking towards me. My whole body trembled when the door slammed shut behind him, leaving us in darkness. "Fuck." Boxes rattled, his feet crushing into cardboard he couldn't see. The room was pretty big, and the only source of light were the high as fuck windows at the top. I'd curled against a cabinet, sitting on some discarded files. Finally, his weight settled next to me with a grunt. "You should be working. You're not on break, Ruth won't be happy." Anything to get him to walk out that door and leave me alone. It was bad enough that being free came with its own shackles. But Killian had brought along with him an emotion that felt too foreign to me to be real. It felt sweet. Like what a younger me thought safety would feel like when my knight in shining armor came to save me from hell. Only my mind was

My family had always dealt more in the drug trade and arms than prostitution. It didn't mean we had no hand in it, though. We simply chose not to get involved. It wasn't exactly us being self-righteous, considering we traded human organs as well. The gruesome sight my monitor displayed made my stomach churn. The man whom my men had tortured for information barely looked human anymore. Finally, though, they got some information out of their 'suspect'. The temptation to storm out of here to meet them was almost sweet enough to make me do it. Still, neglecting the legal side of the business was just begging for trouble and attention from the cops. "What are you staring at like that?" Ariella mumbled from the couch. My mind had been so occupied by the disfigured person that I didn't even notice her waking up. "Nothing important." My fingers swiped across the keyboard, exiting the image, though it remained engraved in my head. Dead and tortured bodies have always been the norm, tho

It took every ounce of self-control in me not to fire the man who called Ariella a whore on the spot. It took even more of it for me to make it through the whole day without crashing out. The production team hadn't been the only unit to have heard something, though. It seemed Ariella's arrival had shaken the whole company up. Ruth had filled me in with all the rumors spreading around the employees, and each was more absurd than the others. After a full day of enduring bullshit meetings with entitled bastards and all sorts of other responsibilities, it was finally my half-hour break time. A foreign giddiness burned inside me as I approached my office. Usually, going into the dim, empty room only left me more exhausted than working. Loneliness had never bothered me because it had become normal. But now the room wasn't empty, and there was no way to be alone. The first thing that registered when I pulled the door open was the sound. Some sort of animated cartoon that had likely

Ruth's lips snapped shut along with the door behind me. Ariella's lip quivered as her gaze shifted from me to Ruth repeatedly. The food Ruth had gotten on my orders remained untouched on the table. The conversation with my father kept ringing in my head, pounding into a headache. The tension between them both drove that headache close into a migraine. "Good morning sir. I trust you've been well." Ruth bowed slightly, her eyes flickering to Ariella for a fraction of a moment. "Enough with the formalities. The building is still standing so I'll assume you and Jason were able to run things properly in my absence." She cleared her throat, standing a bit straighter while trying to hide her pleasure from the praise. "I pulled together all the major events you'll have to attend to immediately and streamlined them into a schedule for your day. You will have two half hour breaks, but otherwise you're occupied." She stepped forward, picking up a discarded folder on my desk. Ariella star

Something had changed his mood. The switch in his attitude became more evident when we left the reception to head to his office and he left me there. No goodbye, no reason. He'd simply said, "I'll be right back." And stormed out with his phone to his ear, arguing in Russian. And he'd been on a call ever since. Whoever it was had to have been the one who'd messaged him at the lobby.Despite Killian’s evident change in attitude, that was still not enough to bring down the awe I felt every time my eyes took in the insane detail of the office he left me in.Unlike the calm, old atmosphere of the reception, everything in this office appeared completely modern. From the one-way sliding glass doors to the glass desk that held nothing more than a single monitor and keyboard. There was also a large white couch with a short table before it.Still, there were only so many times a place could be ogled, regardless of how beautiful it was. Curiosity eventually got the better of me.My mind barely r
