Chapter Two

Harper

My hands shook so violently I dropped the zipper of my suitcase.

I stared at my blurred reflection in the mirror. Tears streamed down my cheeks, hot and bitter. Three years. I had given Alpha Elec Gerald my absolute soul, and he discarded me like garbage on the side of the road.

"Hurry up, weakling."The pack guard leaned against my bedroom door frame. He crossed his massive arms. "The Alpha wants you gone before midnight. You are staining the carpet."

"I am moving as fast as I can,"I choked out.

I threw my remaining sweaters into the bag and zipped it shut. My chest physically ached. Every breath felt like swallowing shattered glass. My pup. I placed a trembling hand over my stomach. My little pup was never going to know its father.

I dragged my heavy suitcase down the grand staircase. The pack house was usually quiet at this hour. Not tonight. Tonight, it sounded like a festival.

"She is here. She is finally here."A maid rushed past me on the stairs, completely ignoring my presence.

I froze on the bottom step. The massive oak front doors were wide open.

There she was. Vespa.

She looked like a runway model. Long blonde hair, flawless skin, and a smug, wicked smile painted on her blood-red lips. She stepped into the foyer, and the entire room erupted in cheers.

"My beautiful girl,"Luna Adora cried out. She stepped forward and wrapped her arms tightly around Vespa. "Welcome home."

"It is so good to be back, Luna,"Vespa laughed softly.

Then, Elec stepped forward.

My breath hitched in my throat. The cold, ruthless monster who had just threatened my life was completely gone. In his place stood a man looking at his true mate with absolute adoration. He reached out and tucked a blonde strand of hair behind her ear.

"You took your time,"Elec murmured. His voice was thick with an emotion he had never, ever shown me.

"I am here now, Alpha,"Vespa purred. She leaned up and kissed his jaw intimately.

I felt violently sick. I gripped the handle of my suitcase and tried to slip out the side door. I just wanted to leave quietly. I wanted to protect the tiny life growing inside me.

"Well, well. Look what the cat dragged out."

Vespa's voice cut through the room like a sharp whip. The laughter stopped instantly. Every single pair of eyes in the room turned to glare at me.

I kept my head down. "Excuse me. I am leaving."

"Not so fast,"Vespa sneered. She walked toward me. Her designer heels clicked loudly against the expensive marble floor. She stopped inches from my face. The scent of her strong perfume made my stomach churn.

"Look at you,"Vespa laughed cruelly, looking me up and down. "You look absolutely pathetic. Did you honestly believe he would keep a weak, useless wolf like you around forever?"

"Vespa, let her go,"Elec said from behind her. His tone was incredibly bored. "She is not worth your breath."

"Oh, I know she is not,"Vespa smiled, her eyes flashing with pure malice. She leaned in closer to my ear. "I just wanted to see the look on her face when I told her my good news."

I swallowed hard, trying to hold back my tears. "I do not care about your news."

"You will care about this,"Vespa whispered viciously. "I am pregnant, Harper. I am carrying Elec's pup. His true heir."

The entire room started spinning.

Pregnant. She was pregnant.

"A pup?"Luna Adora gasped in absolute delight, clapping her hands. "Oh, Goddess be praised."

Elec walked over and wrapped his strong, tattooed arms around Vespa's waist from behind. He rested his large hands gently on her flat stomach. He kissed her neck. He did not even look at me. He looked completely thrilled.

I felt my knees buckle. He had been sleeping with her. He had been cheating on me while pretending to be a loving husband. And now, my baby was going to be replaced before it was even born.

"Get her out of my house,"Elec commanded the guards. "Now."

Two massive enforcers grabbed my arms roughly. They dragged me toward the front doors. I did not fight them. I had no strength left to fight. They threw me out onto the cold, damp pavement and slammed the heavy oak doors shut.

The loud click of the lock echoed in the dark night.

I was completely alone. The freezing wind pierced right through my thin jacket. I grabbed my suitcase and started walking down the empty street. I did not know where to go. I had no family left. I had no pack.

The streetlights flickered above me. My vision started to blur again, but this time it was not from the tears.

A sharp pain shot through my head. My chest tightened painfully. The world tilted sideways.

"No,"I whispered, clutching my stomach. "Please, not my baby."

My suitcase slipped from my frozen fingers. The pavement rushed up to meet me. Everything went totally black.

I gasped for air.

My eyes shot open. I expected to see the dark, wet street. Instead, I saw a massive crystal chandelier hanging from a towering ceiling.

I was lying in the softest bed I had ever felt. The sheets were pure silk. The air in the room was warm and thick with the most intoxicating scent I had ever encountered. Pine needles, dark amber, and raw, terrifying power. An Alpha's scent.

I sat up slowly. My head was pounding.

Where was I?

I looked at the far wall. A massive oil painting hung above a roaring fireplace. It was a crest. A silver wolf howling at a blood-red moon. My heart stopped beating. I recognized that crest. Every single wolf in Europe recognized that crest.

The Nightfall Pack.

The heavy mahogany door to the bedroom clicked open.

I pulled the silk sheets up to my chin, my heart hammering wildly against my ribs.

A man walked in. He was devastatingly handsome, with jet-black hair and eyes the color of liquid gold. He wore a dark, tailored suit that screamed absolute danger and unimaginable wealth. He did not look like a normal Alpha. He looked like a god.

Alpha Pedro. The most ruthless, wealthy, and feared Alpha in the entire world. The only man Elec was actually terrified of.

"You are finally awake, little wolf,"he said. His voice was a deep, velvet rumble that made my toes curl.

I pushed myself back against the headboard, trembling. "How did I get here? Who are you?"

"I think you know exactly who I am, Harper."He walked toward the bed. His golden eyes locked onto mine, completely trapping me in his intense gaze. He moved with a smooth, predatory grace.

He stopped right beside the mattress. He leaned down. His handsome face was mere inches from mine. His intoxicating scent completely surrounded me, making my heart race out of control.

He raised a large, warm hand and gently brushed a stray tear from my cheek. His touch sent a burning shockwave straight to my core.

"Elec made a very fatal mistake tonight,"Pedro whispered, his gaze dropping slowly to my lips.

"He threw away my mate.

CHAPTER 75PEDROI said nothing for a few seconds after Harper asked if I would stop Elec from taking his child, because there were too many thoughts fighting inside my head at once. I could still feel the warmth of her hand in mine, and I could see the fear she was trying to hide behind her tired eyes. She had already been abandoned by the man who should have protected her, and I refused to become another man who made promises only to break them when things became difficult. I tightened my fingers around hers and looked directly into her eyes before finally giving her the answer she needed. Whatever happened next, I would not allow Elec to walk into Nightfall and take anything from her.“Elec has no right to come here and take anyone under my protection,” I said finally and firmly. “It doesn't matter if the child carries his blood. If he wants to reach you, he will have to come through me first.”Harper watched me carefully, as though she was trying to decide whether my words were re

CHAPTER 74HARPERI could not sleep that night, no matter how many times I closed my eyes and pulled the blanket over my head. Every time I started to drift away, I heard the sound of the bedroom door shaking again, followed by the deep voice of the stranger asking who I was and why I was living inside Pedro's pack house. I could still feel his hand around my arm, and I could still remember the fear that had rushed through me when he blocked the window and took the baton from my hand. But the worst part was not the attack itself, because what truly frightened me was the fact that he already knew I mattered to Pedro. He had not looked at me like a random woman he had found inside a room; he had looked at me like someone he had been sent to find.I turned onto my side and stared at the darkness, pressing one hand against my stomach without even thinking about it. My baby was still so small, yet it already seemed to be at the center of a storm that I had never asked for. Elec did not eve

CHAPTER 73PEDROI stood in the middle of the underground room, staring at the dead attacker while the anger inside me continued to burn hotter instead of cooling down. I had expected his confession to give me some peace, but it did the opposite because now I knew that Elec had sent men into my territory, into my home, and straight toward Harper. The thought made my wolf snarl so loudly inside my head that I had to clench my fists to keep myself from destroying something. I looked at the guards standing around the body and gave them a cold order before turning toward Martin, who was already watching me carefully. I was done treating this as a simple attack because someone had crossed too many lines tonight.“Take the body away and put out a search once more,” I ordered. “I want every piece of information you can get from him, even if you think it means nothing.”Martin nodded.“Yes, Alpha.”“And I want a full investigation started immediately,” I continued, turning toward him. “The ro

His body shook violently against the chair, but he still refused to speak, even though wolfsbane had been forced into his system and his healing had completely stopped. One of his fingers remained wrapped in a bloody cloth while the others lay uselessly beside him, and yet the bastard looked at me with nothing but stubborn silence. Even my father, who had spent decades dealing with enemies and traitors, looked uncomfortable as he watched me, while Martin stood nearby with his arms crossed and his jaw tight. I could feel my patience disappearing with every second that passed, and my wolf was already scratching at the inside of my skin, begging me to tear the truth out of the man myself.“You have one chance left,” I said quietly, leaning toward him. “Tell me who sent you.”The man only breathed heavil

CHAPTER 71HARPERI paced around Pedro’s bedroom for what felt like hours, even though it could not have been more than a few minutes since he had left. My heart had refused to calm down after hearing the first explosion outside, and every time another loud sound shook the walls, my body jumped before I could stop it. I tried to look through the tall windows, hoping to see what was happening outside, but the angle was terrible, and all I could see were parts of the courtyard and the dark trees beyond it. Somewhere far below, men were shouting orders, wolves were growling, and every now and then there was another loud boom that made the glass tremble in its frame."Pedro," I whispered, walking toward the window again.I pressed my hands against the cold glass and tried to see through the darkness, but there was too much smoke and movement outside. A group of guards rushed across the courtyard, their weapons drawn, while another group disappeared around the side of the building. I could

Harper’s pov But I also couldn’t put my rut at bay. Even just thinking about her made desire stir within me, hot and insistent, pulling at the edges of my control like a chain about to snap. The meeting with the Council had left me wired, the temporary stamp burning a hole in my pocket, but my body had other priorities. I needed her. I grabbed a cup of coffee from the kitchen, the bitter liquid doing little to calm the fire in my veins, and made my way to her suite. I found Harper asleep in her room, curled up on the bed like she belonged there. I sat on the couch across from her, sipping the coffee slowly, watching the steady rise and fall of her chest. My mind wouldn’t rest. It kept circling back to Elec and the child she carried—his child. How would that affect my future? The fate of my bloodline? I’d bought myself some time with the High Council, but that time would eventually run out. If I didn’t figure out a solution before then, I might end up losing my territory. I’d have t
