Chapter 2

Autor: Dusky Clouds
Raymond and Jason were both embarrassed, so they changed the subject and started talking about when Raymond and I might get married.

Jason faked a cough and said, "Since the two of you are doing well together, we'll make sure you're taken care of when you join the family. For your financial security, I'll give you three percent of the company's shares. Consider it a small gift."

I declined at once. "There's no need for that. That's far too valuable."

What I really thought was that I would have to be insane to join a family with a mother-in-law like this. Forget three percent, I wouldn't even marry Raymond for thirty percent. Besides, my family had our own company too. Such a small amount of shares weren't that valuable to me.

Brandy caught the word "shares" and started another scene.

"What did you say? You're giving what's mine to that gold digger? All of you lied to Dee Dee!"

She charged around the table and raised her hand. I leaned back, but her nails still scraped my cheek as she swiped down. I could still feel the pain on my cheeks.

Raymond stepped between us. He finally snapped after he was being humiliated like this. "Mom, stop it!"

Brandy exploded the moment Raymond said that. "You yelled at me! You actually yelled at me because of an outsider!"

She grabbed plates on the table and hurled them at us. A ceramic bowl shattered beside my feet, and pieces bounced off my pants.

Jason stepped forward to stop her. A glass struck his temple with a sharp crack with a loud clang. Blood trickled down the side of his face.

I was bewildered.

"This is all your fault! You brought this woman home, and now none of you love me! Poor me! Poor Dee Dee!"

Brandy sobbed so hard she could barely breathe. Then her eyes rolled back, her body went rigid, and she fell backward. It took a long time to calm her down and get her breathing back to normal.

Jason sighed. "I'm sorry you had to see that, Fran."

I shook my head. "It's fine. I... I should go home. Thank you for having me today."

Raymond grabbed my wrist. "Don't go. It's already dark, and you live so far away. Stay here for the night at least."

I looked out the window. It was true that night had fallen, and no cab would come this far into the gated community.

After a brief hesitation, I nodded.

Jason carried Brandy, who had cried herself to sleep, back to the bedroom. Raymond and I sat in the living room with the aftermath of what happened just now still scattered across the floor.

A long silence passed before Raymond finally said something.

"My mom has been like this since I was little." He looked down and rubbed his fingers together. "She's been this way for as long as I can remember. When I was four, I had to learn how to manage her moods. I had to keep her from crying, getting angry, or feeling ignored..."

I frowned. "When you were four?"

"Yeah." Raymond looked up as if the answer were obvious. "But isn't that normal? Children should take care of their mothers. It's only right."

The more he said, the worse it sounded to me.

Only right?

What kind of adult made a four-year-old take care of his mother? She had reversed their roles! The adults had made a child responsible for meeting their emotional needs.

One look at Raymond's face told me he thought all of this was normal, and I felt sorry for him. He had been taught this since childhood. He had no idea what a healthy relationship between a mother and son looked like.

"Listen." I met his eyes. "This relationship is unhealthy. Your mother should have taken care of you, not the other way around. In a healthy relationship, a mother cares for her child, and the child loves her in return."

Raymond froze. His lips moved, but no words came out.

We talked for hours.

From how she was having her meltdowns, how he had to soothe her, and how he gave in every time.

"This is..." Brandy started with her soft voice. "Dee... I… I made these yesterday. Take them home and try them."I accepted the package and opened it. Inside were several homemade cookies. They were slightly burned and the shapes were uneven, but I could tell she had shaped each one with care."You made these?" I asked."Yes." Brandy lowered her head and rubbed the toe of her shoe against the floor. "The therapist told Dee Dee to find something to do... No, the therapist told me to find something to do, so I started learning to bake. These didn't turn out well. They're burned. You don't have to eat them if they taste bad..." Her voice grew quieter as she retreated into her own shell again.I took a bite of one. It was a little hard and too sweet, but edible. "It's decent." Brandy looked up, her eyes brightening. Then she quickly lowered her gaze, unable to hide the small smile on her lips. Raymond watched without interrupting, but the relief on his face was impossible to m

Life kept moving forward. Then one day near the end of September, Dawn cursed under her breath again and held out her phone. "Your ex-boyfriend's family is in the financial news again."I took the phone and read the headline.[Smith Group President Jason Smith Steps Down, Son Raymond Smith Named CEO.]The article said Jason was stepping back for health reasons and handing day-to-day operation of the company to Raymond immediately.Dawn clicked her tongue. "Your ex is a domineering CEO now.""He's not a domineering CEO," I said as I rolled my eyes before handing back her phone. "He…just had a hard life."Despite what I said, I texted Raymond that evening. [I saw the news.]He replied quickly. [Dad handed the whole company to me. He said he wants to focus on something else.]I asked: [What's that?] Two minutes passed before his answer came. [He wants to take my mother abroad for a while. They haven't decided where yet, but he said he'll stay with her while she receives treatme

About a week later, work resumed on the Smith Group project affected by the leak.Raymond and his team stayed up four nights straight to prepare a new proposal. Because of the client's relationship with Jason, they received a second chance. That day, I was meeting a client at a cafe downstairs from Smith Group. When the meeting ended and I stepped outside, I saw Raymond leaving through a side door.He wore a lightweight blue-gray jacket and carried a bag of takeout. He stopped when he saw me, then smiled. "Why are you here?""I was meeting a client earlier," I said as I glanced at the bag. "Is that your lunch?""I don't have time for a proper lunch. There's going to be a board meeting this afternoon, and Dad wants me to sit in," Raymond said.He then raised his bag. "How about we share a bit? There are benches in the park nearby."I checked my watch. I had half an hour before two. I nodded and said, "Sure."We sat on a bench in the small park. Raymond opened the bag and took

"You... You brought it when you visited." Brandy avoided my eyes and stared at the marble floor. "Dee Dee didn't eat it. You can have it back."I held the box, unsure what to say. After standing there for two seconds, Brandy reached into the canvas bag again and pulled out an envelope. She pushed it toward me. Inside was about five hundred dollars in cash. "Well... My husband said the other gifts you bought were very expensive." Her voice became weaker and weaker. "Dee Dee doesn't have much money. This is the allowance I saved. It's to pay you back..."I looked at the money and the box of dried mushrooms. The whole situation felt absurd."You don't need to repay me." I pushed the envelope back into her hands. "I'll take the mushrooms. Keep the money."Brandy clutched the envelope and stood there helplessly. She opened her mouth, nearly called herself "Dee Dee" again, then bit her lower lip."How did you get here?" I asked."By a cab," She said."Does Raymond know you left?" I

I was a little stunned as I heard Raymond's words. "Your father gave you full authority?""Yeah," Raymond said. "He said he spent all these years focused on taking care of my mother and let the company suffer. From now on, he'll take care of her, and I'll take care of the company."The setting sun shone through the hallway, casting warm light across his handsome face when he was saying that. I glanced at him, then looked away."Then do your best," I said as I turned toward the elevator."Fran," he called from behind me.I did not turn, but I slowed."After I clean up this mess," his voice carried down the hall, "I'll try to win you back the right way."I stepped into the elevator. As the doors closed, I saw him through the narrowing gap, standing there and waving.Over the next two weeks, I never contacted Raymond first, but he sent me messages every few days. I read every one. Most of the time, I replied with an [Okay] or a [Got it.]Once, Dawn leaned over to peek at my pho

The words on the screen on the printed pages were clear for all to see. The other person had asked: [Can you take a clearer picture of the numbers in the upper left corner?]Brandy had replied: [Dee Dee isn't good at taking pictures. Just use that already.] Then, it was followed by a string of cutesy reaction images. No one in the office spoke.Brandy jumped up and suddenly rushed toward the door.Raymond moved quickly and blocked her. She staggered to a stop, and her knees buckled before he caught her arm."Mom." Raymond sighed. "There's no use in running away."Brandy slumped against him and burst into tears. "Dee Dee made a mistake... Dee Dee made a big mistake... Please don't abandon Dee Dee..."Raymond closed his eyes but kept hold of her.Meanwhile, Jason walked around the desk and stopped in front of Brandy. He watched her until her hoarse wailing faded into broken sobs. Then he bent down, helped her up, and guided her back to the couch with both hands on her shoulde
