Chapter 2

Author: Washing Wheat
That sentence was the last straw that broke my back, and I finally gave up completely on Theo, the son I'd cherished with all my heart.

In my previous life, I was hacked to death precisely because I stayed behind to protect Theo, who was still at North Hill Corporation.

And yet, he still hated me.

In my dying moments, he leaned close to my ear and whispered, "If my real dad were here, he'd definitely be able to protect me."

Thinking of this, I couldn't suppress a mocking laugh. Then, I replied with a shrug, "You're right to change your choice of spouse.

"After all, Theo should be with his biological father. But remember—I'm the one calling off the engagement this time, because I find you filthy!"

My words landed like a bolt out of the blue, sending shockwaves through the entire crowd.

Janelle's eyes turned bloodshot. If someone hadn't held her back, she would've gladly skinned me alive.

"How dare a stray dog that begs at my feet for scraps like you find me filthy?"

The way she looked at me was no different from how she'd look at a dog she could command at will.

After calming down a bit, Janelle gave me a cold stare.

"No matter who the father is, Theo is my son and the descendant of us Erwins!"

I pressed my lips together, a bitter taste lingering in my mouth.

Just from Theo's age, I could figure out exactly when Janelle had conceived him.

This was our make-up wedding. Janelle and I had already registered our marriage five years ago.

On the night of our registration, we'd invited our respective friends to a gathering.

Halfway through the party, I found Janelle and Lance messing around in the bedroom.

I stood outside the door and heard everything clearly. Afraid that others would find out my newlywed wife was already cheating on me, I couldn't muster the resolve to go in or walk away.

Only after the sounds inside had stopped did I push the door open.

I still remembered the words Lance used to humiliate me. He wrapped an arm around Janelle's shoulders and asked, "Isn't this your husband?"

Janelle wrapped herself in the blanket, her body barely covered. Without even glancing at me, she ordered, "My clothes are all torn. Go buy me a new set."

I no longer remembered how I managed to buy the clothes and bring them over. All I could recall was my soul leaving my body, extinguishing every last bit of emotion within me.

I'd already repaid the Erwin family's kindness with my previous life. So, in this life, I lived only for myself.

Emboldened by Janelle's backing, Lance put his arm around her and chimed in, "Since it's come to this, why don't you just file for divorce yourself and walk away with nothing?"

The two played off each other, making it clear that they wanted to kick me out of North Hill Corporation without paying any price.

Even though I was ready to blow my top, I kept my composure on the surface.

"You want me to walk away with nothing? Of course, I can leave North Hill Corporation. But I'm taking what belongs to me. Haven't you always wanted to take control of the company? I can sell you my shares."

Janelle's eyes lit up the moment she heard I was willing to sell my shares. All they had really wanted was to push me out of the company, so getting their hands on my shares was already an unexpected bonus.

After all, as long as Janelle could take full control of the company, she could use the memories from her past life to make the company grow bigger.

Although I didn't have the ability to read minds, I could see it written all over her face.

I sneered inwardly, amused that Janelle had miscalculated so badly.

In my previous life, she blamed the bankruptcy of North Hill Corporation on my poor decision-making. Multiple failed bids and even the purchase of inferior building materials led to the collapse of the structures, wiping out years of effort in an instant.

Yet, she never realized that the real cancer was standing right beside her at this very moment. As soon as Lance joined North Hill Corporation, its stock price would crash to rock bottom and become utterly worthless.

"Lance's debts kept getting bigger and bigger, which was why he took the desperate risk of buying substandard materials." I glanced at the dazed Janelle and added mockingly, "You trust Lance so much that he'd made a fool of you twice."Janelle flipped through the evidence frantically. With trembling hands, she picked up a photo of Lance in a casino. Tears fell from her eyes. Whether from hatred or regret, I couldn't tell. But none of it had anything to do with me anymore.I signaled Jessica to stop the live stream, as the incident had already gone viral."North Hill Corporation Suspected of Using Substandard Building Materials!""North Hill Corporation Vice CEO Arrested on Suspicion of Murder!""Jessica Monroe Breaks Down in Tears—'My Father's Name Has Been Cleared, and Justice Has Been Served!"After Lance was arrested, he was sentenced to death due to the overwhelming public outcry. What surprised me was that during this time, Janelle never called me once. I'd expected that, g

As the words fell, the entire room fell into silence.Janelle could hardly believe what she had just heard. She staggered backward, staring blankly at Lance.Lance lowered his head, unable to meet her gaze.Jessica wore a triumphant smile. Patrick's death was inextricably tied to Lance, so seeing him finally face the consequences felt like long-overdue vindication. After helping Aaron to his feet, I tore the tape off his mouth and brushed the dust from his clothes.Aaron took several deep breaths before finally regaining his composure."That bastard nearly buried me alive in cement. Good thing Jessica showed up in time. She was livestreaming, so he didn't dare do anything worse. Instead, he just tied me up and brought me here."He pulled a USB flash drive from his pocket. It contained records of Lance's dealing in substandard building materials.By now, North Hill Corporation's commercial construction project had progressed to the point of no return.Even though Lance knew he

Lance practically roared the last sentence.Janelle followed behind him, her brows furrowed with rage."I knew it! You're still scheming to use those substandard materials! Once an orphan, always an orphan. Those with no parents are destined to go down the wrong road!"Aaron was bound by the men behind Lance and thrown straight into the hospital room. There was still wet cement on his clothes, and his mouth was sealed with tape.I moved to untie him, but a bodyguard blocked my way.Lance wore a smug smile, as if he had me cornered."The police will be here soon. You'd better think about what you're going to tell them. Using substandard materials is no small offense. You might just end up serving a few years in prison."I didn't panic like they had expected. Instead, I stood with my arms crossed, watching them with calm amusement."Janelle, the universe must've been blind to give you a second chance in life. Do you really think someone who's been kicked out of North Hill Corpora

Lance wore a confident smile, while Janelle shot me a cold, dismissive glance. As soon as I submitted my bid documents, my phone buzzed with a message from Janelle."I'm telling you—North Hill Corporation is absolutely winning this bid! So what if you've been reborn? Without North Hill Corporation, you're nothing but a loser!"Janelle was convinced I would fight her for it. Little did she know, the price in my bid documents wasn't even as high as what North Hill Corporation had offered in the previous life. When the bidding concluded, I noticed the smile had vanished from Lance's face.As I came out of the restroom, I ran into him on the phone just outside the door."Give me a little more time. I'll have the money to pay you back soon. My wife is the CEO of North Hill Corporation. I might be able to run, but can North Hill Corporation do the same?"Whoever was on the other end must have relented, because Lance hung up with a dark expression. When he looked up and saw me standing

"I've already made arrangements, so you won't suffer in prison."With that, Janelle tried to drag me out of the dormitory without waiting for my consent.I stood still, my heart turning completely to ice. I fixed my gaze on the frantic woman before me and said in a low voice, "I repaid your family's kindness in my last life. Now, it's you who owes me."Janelle looked as if fate itself had seized her by the throat. But in an instant, her face twisted into a snarl, and she came at me like a wild animal."You did this on purpose! You ruined me in your last life, and now you're trying to ruin me again!"Even now, she was still convinced that I'd been the one to swap the materials for substandard ones, and that I was the one who destroyed her."You deliberately let Theo get so badly injured as well, didn't you? If anything happens to Lance, I'll make you pay with your life!"Janelle, as she always did, tried to pin all the blame on me without a second thought.I stepped back a few p

Without breaking my stride, I called the emergency services and watched as Theo was taken away by the ambulance. That was the last shred of decency I owed him.As he was lifted onto the stretcher and into the ambulance, Theo's eyes stayed fixed on him."Why didn't you save me? You always warned me about danger before, so why didn't you do it this time?" he muttered. For the first time, I saw panic in Theo's eyes. He pleaded with me to go with him to the hospital. But I slowly pried his hand off mine and gave a faint smile. "I'm not your father. You should ask your real dad to go to the hospital with you."That night, I felt restless and uneasy.I was woken by the sound of crying outside the dormitory. After getting dressed, I grabbed a flashlight and stepped outside. By the cement truck not far away, I saw a woman crying. She looked young, probably just a freshman in college.I panicked and hurried over to her side. The moment I saw her face, I felt my breath caught in my ches
