Chapter 4

Author: Young at Heart
I smiled and replied without any hesitation, "No, thanks. Have fun watching the movie."

With that, I hung up, not caring how Nyra might react.

When I got home, I received a company notice.

My application to return to Myrthia had been approved. They wanted me to wrap things up as soon as possible before heading back.

It was the first good news I'd had in days.

When Nyra came back, I was sorting through handover documents.

Still mad about my attitude on the phone, she grabbed a change of clothes and went to wash up.

By the time she finished, I was already lying in bed, ready to sleep.

Nyra stood at the foot of the bed, staring at me.

Her intense gaze was impossible to ignore, even with my eyes closed.

Just as I was getting annoyed, my phone rang.

"Tyler! Isn't today your birthday? I've brought over some company perks for you!"

Matteo's loud voice cut through the quiet night.

Nyra's expression crumbled at his words.

I hung up, then immediately got out of bed and walked out.

After thanking Matteo, I grabbed the package and headed back.

When I opened the door, Nyra was at the fridge looking for something.

I glanced over, then set down the package and went back to rest.

A moment later, Nyra came into the room and said uneasily, "There's no cake left at home. Let me get you—"

I cut her off with a yawn. "No, thanks. I'm already full."

Nyra looked even more unsettled. "I forgot it was your birthday. Sorry."

"No big deal," I said dismissively. "It's just another birthday. It makes no difference whether I celebrate it or not."

With that, I turned off the lights and went to sleep.

I slept through the night without a single dream.

In the following days, Nyra was always back in the bedroom on time. But I was so busy with my work handover that I had no time to spare for her.

I thought this quiet routine would last until I left.

But one day, while packing up the study, I found a pregnancy confirmation slip. Nyra's name was on it, and it was dated two months ago.

I stared at it for a moment, then kept digging through the drawers.

At the very bottom, I found an abortion consent form. It said the fetus was ten weeks along and had a heartbeat.

Jacob's signature was at the bottom.

That was the moment the last flicker of my hope finally died.

Any hesitation Nyra had stirred over the past few days disappeared, leaving my resolve rock-solid once again.

I took the consent form and the divorce agreement Nyra had given me before and walked to the living room.

Nyra and Jacob were watching a movie together.

Before she could ask why I was there, I handed her the abortion consent form.

The moment Nyra saw it, panic twisted her face. "Tyler… Honey… I can explain! T-This was because Zoe is so young. I couldn't be so cruel."

Her words made me laugh bitterly. "You aborted your own child for someone else's. Nyra, isn't that cruel?"

Her face went pale as my words sank in. Her lips trembled, but no sound came out.

I looked at her coldly and handed over the divorce agreement. "Nyra, let's get a divorce. I've already signed it. You don't have to fake it anymore. I'm stepping aside for him."

I opened the door and looked at her.In the end, Nyra conceded. She left with her head bowed.I thought after that day, I would never see her again. But to my surprise, she rented an apartment near mine.Every day, she would leave homemade meals at my door.Looking at the lunchbox at the door, Mom seemed at a loss and asked me what to do.I glanced at it and replied indifferently, "Just leave it. She'll come to get it herself."Nyra didn't seem to care about my indifference. She persistently made me different dishes every day, and later even pastries. Finally, one day, I couldn't stand it anymore and waited for her by the door. When Nyra saw me, her face lit up. She handed me a lunchbox and said cautiously, "Honey, I made short ribs with broccoli today. There are cream puffs too. You should try them."As I took the lunchbox from her hand, her joy grew even more obvious. But I simply gripped the lunchbox and walked straight to the trash can.I turned to glance at Nyra, who see

Before Jacob could say anything, I added, "Oh, and while you're at it, take Nyra's things too, since you two are living together."The look on Jacob's face shifted quickly from stunned disbelief to deep calculation.Meanwhile, Zoe was thrilled. She wanted to leave with Nyra, but Jacob stopped her. "Nyra is staying here. How about we go home first?"At his words, Zoe burst into tears.Jacob picked her up, grabbed his luggage, and left.I wasn't surprised by the outcome.I had known all along that Jacob didn't care about Nyra. He just wanted a place to stay for free. When Nyra found out they were coming to Ardenai, she willingly opened the door for them.It took Nyra a while to react after they left. She reached out, trying to grab my hand, and finally forced the words out through her strained throat. Without thinking, I nodded. "I understand you."Nyra's smile had just started to form when I continued, "So, divorce is the best choice. If we divorce, Jacob will get his green card, and Zoe won't lose her mom. After all, a kid can't be without her mom."Nyra refused to give up. "I just wanted a fake divorce. How could you—""But I've decided to divorce you for real." I cut her off without hesitation."When you have the time, pack up your things and leave."Before she could respond, I added, "Nyra, the living room is under surveillance. If you don't want Zoe to get into trouble, you'd better sign the divorce agreement."Nyra didn't expect me to use Zoe as leverage. She opened her mouth a few times but couldn't say anything.Eventually, she found an excuse and fled.Watching her hurriedly leave, I felt no sorrow. In fact, I was irritated by her persistent meddling.…For the next few days, Nyra avoided me completely.I didn't look for her either. Instead, I packed up everythi

After saying that, I clutched my wound and turned to head for the door. But before I could step outside, pain shot through my arm.I looked down and noticed a jagged gash had appeared out of nowhere. Bright red blood trickled steadily from the wound.Behind me, Zoe stood with a twisted expression, brandishing a knife in her hand. "Bad guy! You're kicking us out! Go to hell!"As she said that, she swung the knife toward me.I pushed her to the ground at once.Nyra rushed over and pulled Zoe up from the floor before shouting at me, "Tyler, have you lost your mind? How could you lay a hand on a child? She's just a kid! She doesn't know anything!"Ignoring the pain in my arm, I forced the three of them out of the house.Nyra and Jacob didn't waste time arguing with me. They carried Zoe and rushed her to the hospital. It wasn't until much later that I finally went to the hospital.Seeing that the blood had already dried, the doctor scolded me for not taking better care of myself an

My words made Nyra's eyes go wide."Divorce?" she asked, her voice trembling. "Tyler, you want to divorce me?"I shook the divorce agreement in my hand, showing her my signature.Without warning, Nyra grabbed the document from me and tore it to shreds before snarling, "I'm not divorcing you! We'll have another baby in the future. Honey, we're not getting divorced!"Suddenly, Jacob dropped to his knees. "Tyler, I'm sorry. It's all my fault. Nyra only went through with the abortion because of Zoe. If you're mad, blame me. I—"Before he could finish, I yanked him off the floor and landed a hard punch across his face.Jacob covered his face and looked at me with defiance, but there was nothing he could do."You think I won't hit you, like I used to?"Maybe my gaze was too blunt, because Jacob, for once, lowered his head.Nyra instinctively stepped in front of Jacob. Her voice was full of irritation as she said, "Don't drag anyone else into this. The abortion was my decision. Don't
