Chapter 1

Author: Everspring
My throat felt like a giant hand had closed around it, squeezing the air from my lungs.

I had known these 'friends' for twenty years. From elementary school through college, the four of us had always been in the same school, growing up side by side.

I used to think there was nothing better than having the people you loved most, your friends and your boyfriend, always by your side.

I thought the world of the four of us had created would never have room for anyone else.

Now, they were willing to turn against me for a girl they had known for less than three months.

Of course I was furious.

“I don’t agree. Mia isn’t one of us. Why does she have to force her way into our group?

“Lily, you know she sent Evan flirty messages in private. Are you seriously going to take her side and gang up on me?”

Before Mia Williams, whenever another girl had her eyes on my boyfriend, Evan Taylor, my best friend Lily Wilson was always the first to tear her apart for me.

Why was Mia any different?

Lily looked at me like I was the one being unreasonable.

“Jenna Brown, why do you have to make Mia out to be some horrible person? She was just discussing a group project with Evan.

“You’re always so suspicious of everyone. Do you have any idea how exhausting that is for Evan, as your boyfriend? And now the rest of us have to deal with it too.”

Mia had asked Evan to bring her an umbrella outside the movie theater. When she hurt herself dancing, she let him carry her to the nurse’s office. Even the heart-shaped chocolates she bought somehow always ended up with him.

Was I really just imagining things?

I actually started doubting myself for a moment.

Tears welled in my eyes, and I forced them back until the tip of my nose burned.

Evan was starting to look impatient.

“Jenna, the world doesn’t revolve around you.

“All three of us voted yes, so Mia is joining our little family of four.

“Now, we can decide where to go for our next trip. You love taking pictures, right? Mia’s really good at photography. She can take some great shots of you. Everybody wins!”

My heart grew colder with every word.

Then, my phone started buzzing with notifications.

Evan and the other two smiled.

I pulled out my phone. Our four-person group had become a five-person chat.

Mia had joined the group chat.

Mia: [Hey, everyone! I’m Mia. Please take good care of this newbie to the group! I can dance, sing, take photos, and edit videos. Just name it, and I can do it!]

Mia: [Feel free to hit me up anytime!]

Then, she tagged each of us and sent a waving emoji.

Evan was the first, and I was the last.

Lily immediately flooded the chat with cute stickers to welcome her.

Lily: [Everyone, let’s give a huge welcome to Mia joining our Kingsley squad!]

Jason: [Welcome, Mia.]

Evan: [Let’s have a barbecue session this weekend! We’ll make it her official welcome party.]

They kept chatting like they were having the time of their lives.

A tear fell onto my screen. I quickly wiped it away.

I finally found the courage to look at them. “If you insist on letting her join, then I’m leaving.”

They barely glanced at me.

“Jenna, go ahead and throw your little tantrum. Just don’t expect us to let you back in when you come crawling to us later.”

Then they turned right back to Mia, chatting away like I was not even there.

They thought I would eventually cave. They never imagined I would actually leave for real.

I left the group chat that had existed for more than a decade, then I blocked all three of them.

“Fine. From now on, we will go our separate ways.”

I turned around and walked away without looking back.

I heard Evan mutter behind me, “She’ll regret this in a few days. Just leave her alone.”

I quickened my pace, leaving their betrayal and the pain it brought further behind with every stride.

In the hotel lobby, Nathaniel sat reading a book while waiting for me.“All taken care of?”I gave a helpless shrug. “More or less.”I thought he was going to give me the usual speech about staying away from toxic men or finally letting go of a bad relationship.Instead, he started talking about our plans for the future.“Jenna, after spending these past two days with you, I can tell how genuinely passionate you are about becoming a lawyer. If you truly want to become a good attorney, someone with integrity and a sense of responsibility, then you’re not quite ready yet.“Why not start preparing now? Aim for graduate school at Capital University. Surround yourself with more accomplished people. Build yourself up with knowledge and experience. That way, you’ll be better prepared for the profession you want to pursue.”His expression was serious, and he made it clear that he wanted me to think carefully about it.“If you’re willing, we can help each other. Study together, keep eac

(1st POV)Spending the day at the law firm with the other students did more than I expected. It helped quiet the mess of emotions swirling inside me.Everyone was relaxed and easygoing. The firm’s founders were alumni from our university, and they taught me things I could never have learned from textbooks or lectures.More importantly, the experience strengthened my resolve to become a truly competent attorney someday.I wanted to take up the weapon I had in my hands and use it to fight for those who were powerless—to argue their case, defend their rights, and help restore the justice they deserved. At the same time, I got to know Nathaniel better. Before this, I had only ever heard about him through other people. When it came to the law and his cases, he was professional, meticulous, and completely focused. He was nothing like a bookish student who only knew how to talk about theory. Before we left, I could not help but thank him.“Nate, thank you, really! After they landed, Lily and the others dropped their bags off at the hotel before heading to a trendy restaurant they had picked out ahead of time. When the food arrived, none of them reached for their forks.Evan’s phone screen was filled with red exclamation marks. The moment his phone regained service, he had sent Jenna dozens of messages. Every single one had gone unanswered.Despite the bright sunshine and warm sea breeze outside, Evan felt ice-cold all over.Lily, meanwhile, kept staring at her unanswered friend request. She tried adding Jenna over and over, only to be ignored every time. They had been best friends for years. They had never gone this long without speaking before. Now, there was an emptiness in Lily’s chest that she could not shake.Mia could not take watching them sulk anymore. She dug into her food.“What’s wrong with you guys? You look miserable. We came here to have fun, so let’s dig in already.“Our hotel even has hot springs. After dinner, we ca

Evan’s mind went completely blank. He replayed the video again and again. The footage ended abruptly on a shot of Jenna and Nathaniel getting physically close.Evan could not sit still. He thought there was no way this could happen.Jenna loved him more than anyone. They were a couple! She would never betray him.Mia leaned over to look at the screen, putting on an innocent expression. “Wait, am I seeing this right? Isn’t that Jenna and Nathaniel? Why are they together? And why are they hugging like that? “How could Jenna do this to you? You’re her boyfriend. Shouldn’t she be keeping her distance from other guys? Or maybe she’s deliberately trying to make you jealous. What if she’s actually cheating on you with Nathaniel?”The more Evan listened to her, the faster his adrenaline surged.Lily and Jason, who were sitting nearby, heard everything. They immediately pushed back.“No way. Jenna would never betray Evan. They’ve been together for years.”“Jenna isn’t the kind of p

Everyone took Mia’s side, and suddenly, I was the one on trial.Twenty years of friendship had been reduced to a cruel joke.“Fine, I have a bad temper. But you three chose to be friends with me for twenty years! Anyway, you won’t get that chance anymore.”I grabbed my backpack and turned around to leave, but Evan caught me by the arm.“Jenna, just take the chance we’re giving you. There’s no need to take things this far. Once we finish Mia’s welcome party, let’s go back to campus together.”“I don’t need—”Before I could finish, Evan and Lily shoved me toward their private room, forcing me inside.A massive three-tiered cake sat on the table with Mia’s name written across the top. Then my eyes landed on the gift bag beside Jason.I recognized it instantly. It was the designer bag I had been dreaming about for months.Evan promised to buy it for me as my birthday present in June.Beside it were the high heels and camera Lily and Jason had once insisted they would give me.M

From the very first time I met Mia, something about her rubbed me the wrong way.She transferred to our university and, like Evan, was studying architecture. At the freshmen welcome party, Evan performed a song onstage.Mia stood in the crowd clutching a bouquet, staring at him with sparkling eyes.“Evan, you have such a beautiful voice, and you’re the top student in the entire department! If you were my boyfriend, I’d slap myself before I’d ever pick a fight with you.”The words were vague enough that I could not outright accuse her of going after him, but infuriating enough to make my blood boil.Evan looked at me helplessly.I stepped up beside him and looped my arm through his, making it perfectly clear who I was.“Excuse me, but I’m Evan’s girlfriend. I’d appreciate it if you didn’t make comments like that again.”Mia shoved the bouquet into his hands.“I just think he’s a great guy. It’s not like I’m trying to steal your boyfriend.”Evan handed the flowers back and tig
