The hospital smelled faintly of antiseptic and cold air, the kind of chill that sank into your bones no matter how many blankets covered you.

“By the way, Olivia,” Nathan said suddenly, his tone was professional but filled with concern. “Your body scan shows you gave birth naturally... no more than a day or two ago. What happened to the babies? And why weren’t you admitted to the same hospital? You had stitches. The doctor in charge should never have discharged you.”

His words hit like a spotlight, it was bright and inescapable. Avery and I exchanged a quick glance, one of those silent conversations only best friends can have, before turning back to him. Nathan was waiting patiently, but his eyes searched me too closely.
