Chapter 3

Author: Shirley
At six foot three, his features were sharp and hard.

He stood out in the crowd. The top two buttons of his dark shirt were undone, and he held two drinks.

His dark expression didn't stop the women around us from staring at him.

His piercing gaze swept over Isla.

"What a coincidence."

Isla immediately put on a sweet smile and leaned forward. "Yes, maybe it's destiny."

I almost laughed out loud.

Oh, please. You didn't have that look on your face when you were talking trash to me a second ago.

Knox didn't even glance at her. He reached out, grabbed my wrist firmly, and pulled me to his side.

"We're going back. Step aside."

Isla's smile froze. She tried to grab Knox's arm, her tone pleading. "Wait! I have some private matters to discuss with you."

She shot me a sharp glare. "Eden, could you excuse us for a moment?"

I was about to step back, but Knox squeezed my wrist and pulled me right back into his chest. I looked up in shock, only to see him snap his fingers.

The soldiers waiting outside the door instantly swarmed the terrace.

Seeing the armed guards close in, Isla's face turned pale. "What are you doing?"

Knox looked at her, his eyes cold. "I thought your family already knew my answer."

"Regarding the funding we discussed last time, go back and tell your father it's canceled."

"Get out of my sight. Stop polluting the air my sister breathes."

It turned out their private connection was just family business. It had nothing to do with romance.

Decisive and merciless. He truly was the man I wanted.

The color drained from Isla's face. I lowered my eyes, thinking to myself that everyone knew the rules, yet everyone wanted to bet they were the exception.

Too bad no one ever was.

I raised my hand to take his glass, but Isla turned her head sharply, her eyes full of venom.

"What about Eden then? Do you know that your sweet little sister is desperate to get into your bed?!"

Her expression twisted with spite.

She took the secret I had hidden for years and exposed it right in front of him.

Look, your most trusted sister has dirty thoughts about you. I lowered my eyes and gave up on making excuses.

Knox's expression froze.

His gaze landed on my face. I looked away, wanting to explain, but I couldn't force a single word out.

Isla looked like a victor who had finally caught a weakness.

But the next second, Knox took a step toward me. I looked up as he reached out, pressing me tightly against his chest.

The dangerous aura around him vanished. He smiled. "She's right. My favorite person in the world is Eden."

I froze. What?

Isla was stunned.

The air froze. I peeked at Knox and realized he looked proud.

Isla pointed at Knox, her voice trembling. "But you said you wouldn't get involved with women."

Knox looked done wasting words on her.

"A woman like you could never understand the bond between Eden and me. What we have isn't shallow lust."

"We are soulmates."

Isla stood frozen, unable to speak.

Just as I expected. This wasn't the first time someone tried to stir up trouble, and Knox never panicked.

He was certain we were the most important people in the world to each other. But to him, it had nothing to do with romance.

Isla heard the truth in his tone. She stood there in silence. Those threats she made earlier sounded like a joke now.

I was never her rival, and she could never be the only one in Knox's heart.

That high and mighty politician's daughter just traded all her dignity for a man she was never going to have.

I carefully pieced together the details in my head, and finally figured out why I didn't recognize Bastian at first. He always wore sunglasses, deliberately hiding his childhood edge. He disguised himself flawlessly as a mafia boss. So much so that before that night in the VIP booth, I failed to connect him as Knox's underground ally.I narrowed my eyes, scrutinizing Knox's stoic face. A far more absurd thought flashed into my mind. "Did you already know I liked you?"The room went quiet for a few seconds. He replied in a low voice, "I knew."At this moment, I felt like a fool.Knox had never been a slow person. He took over half the family's businesses in his teens, and redrew the power map of the outer districts in his early twenties.Every woman in the past who tried to use her body to get close to him, he could sharply detect and mercilessly reject. With a brain like that, how could he not see through the feelings of a girl who hovered around him every single day?He just never bro

  • Baiting the Heir   Chapter 10

Knox's acting was so natural that anyone who didn't know the truth would think he really was my boyfriend.Bastian asked, "Eden, what do you want for dinner? How about Italian?"Knox immediately vetoed it. "Her stomach is weak. She can't eat too much heavy cream sauce.""Then let's try seafood?""She's allergic to shellfish."My mouth twitched, listening to one ordering and the other rejecting. At first, it sounded reasonable, but later it just turned into pure arguing.Clearly annoyed, Bastian hit the gas and parked the car in front of a fusion restaurant. The menu here covered everything, completely blocking Knox's excuses. The three of us sat in a booth. Bastian and Knox sat on opposite sides, and I sat in the middle with that bouquet of roses. The waiter came over five times. It wasn't until the head chef personally came to ask for the third time, "Gentlemen, our dining limit here is two hours."Knox finally pulled back his long legs. "Let Eden eat first."I secretly breathed a sig

Knox went dead silent.I looked at him in surprise. He pressed his lips together. When he didn't smile, his features were cold and hard. He seemed to notice my gaze and tried to force a smile, but failed. "Eden, you've only known each other for half a month. Isn't this too fast? You should at least get to know him."Knox frowned, gritting his teeth as he added, "Besides, one look and you can tell he's a bastard who just wants to trick you into bed. Giving you strong liquor on purpose, and wearing a tailored suit with two buttons undone, he's just a shameless bastard!"I almost laughed out loud at the double standard. The lighting was so dim earlier, it was a miracle he could even see how many buttons his rival had undone. My eyes landed on Knox's perpetually unbuttoned shirt collar, thinking to myself: when it comes to being shameless, he took the prize."Just trying it out. If it doesn't work, we'll call it off."He sat rigidly in place. The large bedroom fell into a deathly silence.

I stared down at the glass, lost in thought. I felt the hair on the side of my head being gently tugged. Bastian had his arm draped over the back of the booth, casually twirling a strand of my hair.I frowned, feeling uncomfortable with the closeness. But before I could move, a figure strode toward us.My hair was released. I looked up in shock, meeting a dark, terrifying face.It was Knox. The Knox who was supposed to be dealing with family business miles away!He was followed by two men in black suits, and the atmosphere instantly grew tense.Without a word, he grabbed Bastian's wrist. His eyes were frighteningly cold, and his other hand reached inside his jacket. My heart stopped. I jumped up from the sofa. "Knox?! Why did you bring so many people?"The music in the booth stopped. Everyone's eyes were glued to us. One of Bastian's men muttered, "Boss, is that Miss Eden's fiancé?"Damn. With just that one sentence, the gossip exploded in the room.Knox released Bastian's wrist, and

The sofa cushion beside me sank. A cold scent of cedar hit me. I turned my head and saw Bastian. He was leaning against the backrest, casually loosening his dark tie.His eyes landed on my phone. "Boyfriend?"I put my phone face down. "Not exactly. It's just a one-sided crush."In front of a business partner, I didn't bother to hide it."Is that right?" A smirk touched his lips, and he let out a low chuckle. "I thought the prettiest little girl in our old neighborhood had long since become Knox's exclusive property."Neighborhood? Little girl? Knox?!How did he know! That name came up too suddenly. My mind raced, and I looked at him, almost losing my composure. He didn't mind and reached up to take off his sunglasses."Can't recognize me? Back when you lived in the Seventh District, I saw you at the end of the alley every day. But after you got taken in by the Don, I was just a spectator."Once the sunglasses were removed, Bastian's mysterious aura shifted. Those deep, sharp eyes awake

His intense scent wrapped around me. My head was spinning. Before I could process what he meant, his hand slid up my waist and squeezed gently. A shiver shot straight up my spine. My legs went weak. I gritted my teeth and glared at him, igniting a wild spark inside me. I reached down and gave him a harsh, vengeful squeeze right through his expensive slacks.I heard him gasp in my ear. The heat against my palm was shocking, hardening instantly. His eyes turned dangerous. My instincts were screaming at me. I wanted to let go, but it was too late. His large hand covered mine, pinning it in place so I couldn't escape. Then, he crashed his lips onto mine."Don't worry, I'll make you feel good."I eventually put a stop to that crazy encounter.I was terrified that once we crossed the line, the fragile balance between us would shatter forever. The second I regained my senses, I shoved him away. There was no denying his touch was intoxicating, leaving my cheeks burning and my legs weak. B
