“Get out! Leave this territory and see how long you survive without the Ashford name backing you!”

Celeste Ashford’s voice shrieks through the heavy iron gates of Ashford Manor, echoing across the damp cobblestones of the Blackveil District. Her face is twisted with raw rage, her wolf’s dominance flaring uselessly against my skin. Beside her, Piper Ashford—the pure-blood heiress who took my place three days ago—clutches her mother’s velvet cloak, her dark eyes wide with synthetic innocence.

I don’t turn around. I don’t give them the satisfaction of a backward glance.

My fingers wrap tightly around the strap of my worn duffel bag as I reach the edge of the estate’s perimeter line. I pull my phone from my leather jacket, hit speed dial, and bring it to my ear.

"It's over," I say, my voice steady, carrying the absolute weight of someone who commands the shadows. "Come pick me up."

Behind me, Celeste is still screaming, her sharp heels clicking against the stone as she drags her precious daughter back into the safety of the pack house. Piper lingers for a fraction of a second, her scent spiked with deep suspicion. She’s wondering who a human-raised exile could possibly be calling. For twenty years, the Ashford family treated me like a charity case, a weak human orphan brought in from the countryside after my grandmother died. They thought my entire universe revolved around the Ashford pack and Callum Prescott, the high-ranking beta they promised me to before Piper returned.

They have no idea who I really am.

High above the front courtyard, the sheer curtains of the second-floor study twitch. Piper and her father, Malcolm Ashford, stand behind the reinforced glass, staring down at the foggy gates.

A low, guttural roar vibrates through the mist.

It isn't a sleek luxury vehicle or a gilded pack limo. A heavily armored, matte-black Blackwood Range Rover tears through the fog, its custom reinforced engine growling like an unleashed beast. It cuts across the damp asphalt, coming to a dead stop directly in front of me. The dark, tint-shielded glass reflects no light, radiating pure, untamed dominance.

The driver’s side door swings open.

Landon Pierce steps out onto the pavement. Built like an iron fortress with a sharp buzz cut and a lethal aura, his dark tactical gear bears no pack insignias. He moves with the lethal precision of a high-tier rogue enforcer. His gaze scans the perimeter before locking onto me.

"Boss," Landon says, his voice a low baritone that cuts through the wind. He snaps into a crisp, rigid posture, bowing his head in total submission.

There is no mockery in his posture, no hesitation. Only the absolute loyalty of a lieutenant to his commander.

"Landon," I nod quietly.

Without a word, Landon glides to the rear passenger door, pulling it open for me with practiced respect. I step inside the custom-reinforced cabin, sinking into the leather seat. The heavy door thuds shut, instantly sealing out the cold air and the suffocating scent of the Ashford pack territory.

Landon slips back into the driver’s seat, slamming the transmission into gear. The wide, bulletproof tires screech against the stone, and the massive Range Rover launches forward, tearing away from Ashford Manor like a nightmare fading into the dark.

Up in the study, Piper presses her hands flat against the glass, her heart hammering against her ribs.

Through the tinted glass of the retreating SUV, Landon’s sharp, amber eyes flash up toward the window. For a split second, his gaze locks onto hers. It isn't a human look—it is the ruthless, predatory stare of an alpha enforcer inspecting prey.

Piper gasps, her throat closing up as a wave of instinctual terror washes over her. Her knees buckle instantly. The breath leaves her lungs, and she collapses onto the hardwood floor, shivering violently.

"Piper!" Celeste cries out, rushing across the room to scoop her true-blood daughter into her arms. "What happened? What’s wrong?"

Malcolm Ashford doesn't move. His eyes remain glued to the road where the black monster of a vehicle just vanished. A cold sweat breaks out across the back of his neck. He has spent thirty years navigating the underworld of Ravenshire City, making deals with the darkest mafia packs in the Blackveil District, but he has never seen an armored vehicle built like that one.

"Whose vehicle was that?" Malcolm mutters, his jaw tightening until his teeth ache.

Piper clutches her mother’s dress, her knuckles turning stark white, her voice trembling violently. "That... that was Darcy's ride. She just got into that car."

Malcolm turns slowly, his eyes wide with rising doubt. "Darcy? How could a human girl without a pack know someone who drives a military-grade beast like that?"

Celeste scoffs, waving her hand dismissively as she helps Piper to a chair. "Don't be ridiculous, Malcolm. Birds of a feather fly together. She probably hired some low-life rogue from the slums to put on a show. The vehicle didn't even have a family crest on it! It’s probably a scrap metal heap built in the Blackveil Quarter. Is it really worth ruining your morning over a trash girl we just threw out?"

Before Malcolm can answer, a hesitant knock rattles the heavy oak door of the study. Edwin Clarke, the old pack butler, steps inside. His hands tremble as he holds a silver tray bearing a single piece of paper and an unmarked black metal card.

"Alpha... Ma'am," Edwin stammers, keeping his head bowed. "I was clearing out the human girl's room as instructed, and I found this left on her nightstand."

"Just throw her garbage into the burn pit!" Celeste snaps, her eyes flashing gold. "Why are you bringing her trash into our study?"

Malcolm ignores his wife and steps forward, snatching the paper and the heavy black card off the tray. The metal card is cool to the touch, bearing a faint, engraved symbol of a crimson crest—a mark he doesn't recognize. He unfolds the crisp white paper.

Sprawled across the center of the page is my sharp, elegant handwriting. It is a precise, itemized ledger.

Four years of room, board, clothing, and basic living expenses at Ashford Manor: $500,000.

PIN: 000000.

Consider the debt of my upbringing paid in full. Do not contact me again.

Malcolm’s breath hitches. He remembers how I threw the Ashford pack check back into his face twenty minutes ago, my eyes completely devoid of fear, disgust, or regret. I hadn't just walked away from their wealth—I had rejected their bloodline entirely.

"Five hundred thousand dollars?" Celeste reads over his shoulder, releasing a bitter laugh. "The brat is delusional! Piper spends that much on her monthly training runs in Sterling Heights! She lived like royalty under our roof for four years, and she thinks five hundred thousand covers it? Where would a human parasite like her even get half a million dollars? That card is probably empty!"

"Shut up, Celeste," Malcolm growls, his voice cracking with sudden authority. His fingers tighten around the edge of the paper until it crumples in his grip. He stares at the bold, dark ink of my signature.

He remembers the absolute coldness in my eyes when I walked through the gates. A human should be terrified of being cast out into a city controlled by ruthless werewolf mafia families. A human should have begged for protection.

Instead, I looked at him like he was nothing.

"Call Edwin back," Malcolm commands, his voice dropping an octave as a dark pit opens in his stomach. "Have the accountants run every single ledger from the past four years. I want an exact, itemized report of every single meal, shirt, and dollar Darcy Ellington ever touched in this house!"

The Blackwood Range Rover cuts smoothly through the neon-drenched rain of the Blackveil District. Modern skyscrapers tower over dark alleyways where rogue wolves and mafia enforcers lurk in the shadows. This is Ravenshire City—a territory where human blood is cheap, and strength is the only currency that matters.

I lean my head back against the leather headrest, watching the wet city lights bleed across the windowpane.

"The transition is complete, Boss," Landon says, catching my eyes in the rearview mirror. "The Blackthorn Transit Complex has been cleared. The Black Sun Council received your formal resignation from the Ashford pack registry. As far as the high packs are concerned, Darcy Ellington is officially a nameless rogue."

"Good," I say, my tone smooth, laced with a lethal calm. "Let them think I’m powerless. Let Malcolm and Celeste celebrate their true-blood heiress."

I reach inside my jacket and pull out a small, glass vial filled with a shimmering violet liquid—Zetro Vesper. The suppressed power dormant in my human veins hums in response to the compound, a dark, dormant force stirring deep beneath my ribs. For twenty years, I hid my true lineage, playing the quiet human orphan to keep my grandmother's secrets safe.

They thought they threw away a dog. They have no idea they just released an uncaged nightmare into their own city.

"Where are we heading first?" Landon asks, turning the heavy steering wheel as we approach the border of Redgrave Territory.

"To the Silveroak Keep," I answer, a cold smile touching my lips. "Alaric Sterling is expecting his new partner."

Landon’s eyes widen slightly in the mirror, a dark smirk flashing across his chiseled face. "The Alpha of the Ravenscroft Family won't know what hit him."

"He doesn't need to know," I say, watching the iron gates of the underworld district swing open before us. "He just needs to pay."

The SUV accelerates into the darkness, leaving the Ashford name, their fake titles, and their pathetic pack politics behind in the mud. They wanted me gone. Now, they’re going to learn what happens when the human they discarded comes back to claim the entire territory.

"Get out of my face before I snap your neck, Everett," I say, my voice dripping with cold lethal promise as I step through the heavy iron archway of the Blackthorn Transit Complex. My knuckles are taped tight, bruised and raw from my third underground cage fight of the night, but my posture doesn't slip. I am Darcy Ellington. I am a human female, plus-sized and soft-looking to anyone foolish enough to rely on their eyes, but I survived twenty years in the shadow of the Ashford Pack without a wolf inside me. I don't cringe before Alpha wolves, and I certainly don't bow to corrupt territory enforcers.Director Everett Shaw stands in the flickering neon light of the loading dock, his posture stiff, surrounded by four heavy-set enforcers from the Black Sun Council. Behind him, the sleek, ink-black body of a Blackwood Range Rover idling nearby catches the faint moonlight."You have no jurisdiction here, Everett," I say flatly, slinging my heavy leather duffel over my shoulder. "The Ashford

"Darcy, you just walked out of a pack exile," Landon notes, turning to look at me with a rare flicker of genuine concern in his eyes. "Your pulse is running fast. You're bleeding off raw tension.""I'm not bleeding tension, Landon," I reply, my voice dropping an octave as a strange, deep warmth begins to hum beneath my sternum—a sensation that has been growing stronger every day for the past month, a dark, heavy pulse that feels entirely un-human. "I'm starving."We descend the wet concrete steps into the pit. The air hits me like a physical blow: cheap liquor, sweat, ozone, and the thick, iron tang of wolf blood. In the center of the underground arena, a massive reinforced steel cage stands illuminated by harsh floodlights. Inside, a hulking wolf-shifter in mid-transformation—his jaw elongated, razor-sharp fangs dripping saliva—is currently beating a rival fighter into the blood-soaked dirt. The crowd is roaring, placing frantic bets with Redgrave syndicate bookies."Look who finally

"Step back before I break your jaw, Malcolm," I snarl, my upper lip pulling back over my teeth as the silver-threaded pack decree hits the heavy mahogany table between us.The heavy scent of scorched pine and fresh blood clings to the air inside the Silveroak Keep. My heart thuds hard against my ribs, an angry, frantic rhythm, but I keep my shoulders squared. I am a human raised among the apex predators of the Redgrave Territory, but I will not bow my head. Not tonight. Not to the man who called himself my father for twenty years."Watch your mouth, girl," Malcolm Ashford rumbles, his dark wolf eyes flashing a lethal amber. His Alpha aura rolls off him in suffocating waves, trying to force my knees to buckle. "You have no bloodline here. You never did. You were a mercy case we took in, a pity project. But Piper is back. The true bloodline of the Ashford Pack has returned, and we will not have a weak, wolf-less human polluting our legacy."Beside him, Celeste Ashford smoothes the front

"Young Miss, you must step back before the pack guards take your head!"Wesley Grant’s panicked voice echoed through the grand stone archway of Crownvale Moon, the highest sacred stronghold in Ravenshire City. The old pack elder’s knuckles were white as he clutched his silver-trimmed cane, his grey wolf eyes wide with terror.I didn't step back. I didn't even slow my pace.I wiped a streak of dark, black-market Zetro Vesper blood off my cheek with the back of my leather glove, letting my heavy boots carry me straight past him. My hips swayed with deliberate, unbothered weight, my full-figured body filling out the tailored black coat I had stolen from an Ashford enforcer. They called me a fat, bloodless human parasite when they threw me out of Ashford Manor. They said a girl built like me, with no wolf and too much flesh, was fit for nothing more than scrubbing the floors of the Eastmoor Quarter slums. They were about to learn how heavy my shadow could get."Get out of the way, Wesley,

"Who gave you permission to breathe my name without kneeling?"I didn't just shove Sornk Mercer against the cold stone wall of the Silver Fang Club; I drove the heel of my boot into her instep until I heard the satisfying crunch of bone. Her face pressed flush against the damp, moss-covered granite, her skin turning a bruised purple under my grip.I leaned down, the iron scent of her fear filling my lungs. "Try calling me a human parasite again, Sornk. I dare you. I'll rip your vocal cords out through your throat and feed them to the rogues in the Blackveil District." My claws, half-extended and gleaming black, dug right into her scalp, drawing a line of fresh, hot blood. "Do we have an understanding?"Sornk whimpered, a pathetic, high-pitched whine that rattled in her chest. She couldn't even form words, her body trembling violently under my weight. The crowd of pack enforcers and mid-tier mobsters surrounding us went dead silent. Nobody moved. Nobody breathed. Piper’s eyes suddenly snap open. They are wild, bloodshot, and completely consumed by pain. "You..." she wheezes, her voice barely a whisper as she recognizes my face. "The... human... get away from me...""Save your breath, Piper," I say, leaning down until my face is inches from hers. "Your precious father threw me out into the cold so you could take my place. But right now, your life rests entirely in the hands of the human girl you replaced."I bring the silver needle down, plunging it directly into the pressure point beneath her left collarbone.Piper screams—a raw, agonizing sound that echoes straight through the thick stone walls of Crownvale Moon. Dark, tainted blood bubbles up from the puncture site, clinging to the silver as the Zetro Vesper poison begins to drain out of her system."Hold her!" I bark at Marcus, driving the second needle into her sternum. The monitor beside the slab beeps frantically. The irregular, chaotic spikes of her heart rate begin to smooth out, dropp
