Chapter 8

Author: Peachy
Aurora's POV

The guests turned in horror, staring at the madman who had just stormed the holy cathedral.

Nico staggered toward the altar, his eyes wild with desperation.

"Aurora!" he yelled. "Don't marry him! Come with me!"

His suit was a mess, his tie crooked, the smell of liquor rolling off him in waves.

"Get him out of here!" the Mayor shot to his feet, his face thunderous. "Security!"

But Nico was beyond reason.

He reached the altar and tried to grab me.

"We can still have a chance!" he said, frantic. "I have the divorce papers! Bianca already signed them!"

"Nico!"

A shrill female voice came from the entrance.

Everyone turned again.

Bianca burst in, a wedding dress trailing behind her, her makeup a ruin.

She looked even crazier than Nico.

"You bastard!" She launched herself at Nico, clawing at his clothes. "You think I didn't know?"

"Bianca, don't make a scene!" Nico tried to push her away.

"A scene?" She let out a shrill laugh that scraped like nails on a chalkboard. "Five years!

Morning light streamed through the windows and onto the bed.I woke up in Lucas's arms. His arm was wrapped around me, his breathing steady and warm.It was the best night's sleep I'd had in five years."You're awake?" His voice was a low rasp in my ear."Mmm," I turned to face him.The morning sun cast soft shadows on his face. Those deep, dark eyes were watching me with pure affection."Sleep well?" he asked, stroking my hair."Very well."He kissed my forehead."What's the plan for today?" I asked."Your family wants to see you. I had them blocked from the church, but they're trying again," he said, his tone grudging. "They booked a private room at the hotel."My mood soured instantly. The Rossi family. The family that cast me out, that watched coldly as I was exiled.Noon.The top-floor private room of New York's most luxurious hotel. My father, Vincent Rossi, sat at the head of the table, surrounded by my stepmother and a few cousins. They were all in their best clothes, fake smil

Three years later. Florence, Italy. I had made a small name for myself in European art restoration. One day, a man in dark sunglasses came to my studio."Mr. Moretti would like to commission you to restore a family heirloom."He showed me a badly damaged Renaissance-era painting."This is...?" I inspected the canvas."A 16th-century piece, passed down for generations," the man said. "Mr. Moretti's grandmother is dying. Her last wish is to see this painting whole again."My heart sped up.Moretti..."What is the client's name?""Lucas Moretti."Three months of work.I used every technique I knew, researched every text I could find. Finally, on the delivery day, the painting was glorious again.I brought the restored piece to a villa in Milan.Lucas was waiting for me at the door.He looked older, more mature after three years. But those deep, dark eyes were just as gentle."Aurora," he said softly."Lucas."We smiled at each other."She's upstairs," he said. "My grandmother."The old wo

Five years ago. Rain beat against the stained-glass windows of old St. Anthony's church.I was huddled on a back pew, a thin jacket my only warmth.Bank accounts frozen. Credit cards canceled. No place to live.Father Thomas took me in."Aurora," he said softly, "God will open another door for you."I didn't answer.I hadn't said more than two words in three days."The children love it when you teach them to draw," the priest continued. "Maybe this is your new path."I looked over at the kids in the corner.Maria, Miguel, little Johnny...They were scribbling on scrap paper with broken crayons, their eyes full of simple joy.At least someone needed me.A month later. Midnight.BANG! BANG! BANG!The frantic pounding on the door shattered the church's peace.I shot up from my cot."Aurora!" Father Thomas's voice was panicked. "Quick, help me!"I ran to the door.A tall man had collapsed on the steps, covered in blood. His black suit was torn, his face cut open. But even then, I could see

Aurora's POVThe party was over.Guests filed out, nodding respectfully as they passed our table."Mr. Moretti, Miss Rossi. Have a wonderful evening.""Congratulations on your engagement..."A chorus of fake pleasantries.Lucas stood and draped his suit jacket over my shoulders."Let's go, baby."We walked toward the parking garage. The sound of our shoes echoed on the marble floor."Aurora!"A rough voice shouted from behind.I stopped and turned.Nico was storming toward us, his face dark, his eyes desperate."Wait." He was out of breath. "I need to talk to you."Lucas's face went cold."Mr. Falcone, I believe we're done here.""No." Nico shook his head, his eyes locked on me. "Aurora. Five minutes."I looked at Lucas."It's okay," I said softly. "Let him talk."Lucas nodded but didn't move far. He leaned against the Rolls-Royce, his black eyes watching Nico's every move.Nico stepped in front of me, his eyes full of pain and regret."Aurora, I was wrong." His voice was raw. "I was w

Nico's POVI stared as Lucas gently caressed the mark on her skin.A bullet to the heart. The memory hit me. Five years ago. Her in an ivory wedding dress, walking toward me, her eyes full of light.Back then, she was all mine. And now..."Falcone." Lucas's voice cut through my thoughts. The Don stood up, his tall frame casting a long shadow."I recall we had an agreement." His voice was calm, like he was talking about the weather. "But that agreement didn't include you putting your hands on my woman.""Mr. Moretti, I...""I need your assurance," he cut me off. "This will not happen again."My throat went dry."Y-Yes, sir."Lucas gave a satisfied nod, then turned to Aurora."Let's sit, baby."He pulled out her chair, his movements gentle, like he was handling a treasure.I was moved to a table nearby, forced to watch them.Waiters brought out the food.Lucas picked up a silver knife and started cutting her steak.Perfect slices. He pushed the plate in front of her."Try this. You'll li
