“WHAT?!”

I can’t believe my ears. Did he just fire me without letting me know? Again?

This was my problem with Massimo. Always making decisions that would affect me without even letting me know.

“How could you do that?” I fire at him. “You have no rights to send a resignation letter without even letting me know!”

“Calm down, alright?” He says coolly, like my reaction doesn't bother him one bit. “I don't want you working here anymore. In a few days, we'll be married. It will be a stain on my name if my wife is a highschool teacher at some local high-school.”

“You should have told me first before making that decision,” I holler.

“Come on. I know it's a bit messy but I'm doing you a favor here. You won't work for two years as my wife and you'll be well taken off, with a monthly allowance that's ten times your salary here.”

“That sounds like a nightmare!”

I can’t imagine not teaching for two years. Just taking care of Erik all day long without a bit of a distraction. For oth

(Pamela)..THE REST OF THE DRIVE is silent, aside from the soft hum of the engine. This part of NYC is brand new to me and it's so obvious that it's where the rich live. Luxury cars, exotic relaxation spots and expensive buildings line up the street. I take it all in with a deep breath. Even the people walking by the roadside look different. Posh and elegant. Some are walking their poodles that are dressed in dog clothes worth thousands and I can see so many girls stepping in and out of malls with lots of shopping bags.Growing up, I never ever thought I would experience any of this one day. It all seemed like a distant dream, one that would never come true. But here I am. Sitting in a posh car, even though it was next to a man I disliked so much.Or did I?“The city is beautiful, yes?” Massimo’s voice cuts into my thoughts. He glances at me and then his gaze returns back on the road. “You should see it at night.”I already have. It's what I spent most of my evenings doing. Scro

(Massimo)..MY MOUTH HANG OPEN the moment I see her.She looks exactly like Elsa. The slope of her neck, the curve of her hips, the delicate lines of her face. . .all of it is so identical to my late wife. How the hell did I not notice this before?Pamela shifts slightly under my gaze, smoothing her hands down the crimson dress that hugs her body in all the right ways. The color suits her, just like it always suited Elsa.A sick feeling knots in my stomach.I’ve spent weeks in her presence, spoken to her, argued with her on so many occasions. And yet, it’s only now when she's dressed like this, with her hair styled just so, that I finally see it.For the past five years since I lost the love of my life, I never gave any other woman the time of day. And most of them have tried their hardest to win me over. But none of their silly tactics ever worked. None of them ever stirred anything in me.Until now.Until Pamela stepped out of the room, dressed completely different and looking lik

(Pamela)..THE LAST THING I see before I can make sense of what's happening is Massimo’s lips crashing down onto mine. At first, it feels like I'm dreaming. Like this isn't real at all. It has to be a prank, right? But after a few seconds in, the fog in my head clears and I finally realize that this isn’t a figment of my imagination nor is it a prank.Masimo D'Amato is actually kissing me.Right in front of all these people. I hear the rapid clicks of the cameras behind us and the the muffled gasps from onlookers. They're all as shocked as I am.I don't understand it. How and when did we go from arch enemies to this? This wasn't even part of the plan. We were only supposed to hold hands like a couple as we walked into the restaurant and that was it. That was what we agreed on, or at least, what I assumed we agreed on. Massimo never mentioned anything about kissing each other in front of the media.I should have known better. I should have seen it coming. This man always did what

(Massimo)..THE TABLE is dead silent.Pamela picks at her food, barely eating, and I can’t blame her. There’s nothing to say between us, and I know it’s partly my fault.I never should have kissed her, especially not on the lips. I should have followed Veronica’s plan, kept it simple, and played my part. But the moment I looked at her, in that red dress, with that beautiful face, and every other little detail that reminded me of Elsa, I just couldn't resist. No matter how hard I tried. The truth is that I didn’t kiss Pamela because I wanted her. I kissed her because, for just a second, I wanted to know what it felt like to kiss Elsa again. After almost five years since she passed away. And I don't know how to explain that to her. She'd never be able to understand exactly how it feels. And I know she'll always hate me for barging into her life and making her do things she never wanted to do.For the first time since this whole fiasco started, I feel a little sorry for my actions. B

(Pamela)..MY BODY STIFFENS at the mention of Massimo’s brother, Kal. I take in a deep breath and try to relax my already shaky nerves. But I'm barely holding myself together. First, the kiss I never saw coming and now this?“He's here right now,” Katrina continues, as soon as she notices my discomfort. “I can call him over if you want. It'll be a wonderful reunion.”“No need to do that,” Massimo says immediately, like he's scared of something. And he should be because I'm not in the right state of mind to meet his brother yet. After everything he's done to Anna and I, I don't think I can hold myself together if he comes over right away. “Oh, well. . .it's a shame. I'd better head back,” the woman says as she straightens. “It’s been lovely meeting you, Pamela. I’m sure we’ll be seeing a lot more of each other.”“Don't count on it.” Massimo hisses. It's hard not to notice that they have a lot of tension between them. But none of it is any of my business. I just need to get throug

(Pamela)..I SLOWLY MAKE MY way to the wash basin, feeling Katrina's eyes on me the whole time. I don't know why but I just feel that beneath her syrupy sweet smile, she doesn’t really like me.Which is crazy to me because I don't even know her. I've only just met her for the first time tonight but she wears her disapproval of me on her sleeves.“So?” She turns to me, a big wide smile on her face that didn't reach her eyes. “How does it feel having Massimo all to yourself?”I frown in disbelief. “I have no idea what you're talking about.”Katrina chuckles. “Funny that Elsa said the same thing to me and yet she had Massimo wrapped around her finger.”What is her obsession with Massimo? I mean, isn't she engaged to his brother? And who is this Elsa everyone keeps talking about?“Who is she?” I ask tentatively. “This Elsa?”Katrina's smile disappears. “Like I said, she's the one that had Massimo wrapped around her finger. It was pathetic really, how a powerful man like Massimo could bo

(Pamela)..LUCKILY FOR ME, the paparazzi are all gone by the time we set out to leave. We get into the limo and the driver speeds off. When I check my phone, it's almost 10 pm. I've never been out this late before, not even when I was in college. My mind skips back to the conversation I just had with Katrina at the ladies’ bathroom. I wonder if I should bring it up or not. Today has been a very hectic day and opening a whole can of worms is not the best way to end it.But my curiosity gets a hold of me.“Is it true?” I ask Massimo. He turns to face me, his brows nearly touching his hairline in confusion. “Is what true?”“That Kal made Anna sign an NDA?”“Who told you that?”“It's not important.”“It's Katrina, isn't it? She just never keeps her mouth shut.” He exhales. “So?”“Yes, he did. He made her sign an NDA, like we all do.”“Why?”“Because our reputation is that important, Pamela. You just don't understand, do you?” Massimo asks, an edge in his voice. “Being a D’Amato is not

(Pamela)..“You're everywhere,” Bonnie shrieks, shoving her phone in my face for the tenth time.I've already seen the headlines a thousand times that morning. And right next to it is the photo of Massimo and I kissing back at the restaurant, which had been the highlight of the evening.“Everybody's talking about it,” Bonnie continues. “I can't believe my best friend is the talk of the town. You're almost like a celebrity.”Celebrity seems like a long stretch. And the only reason people are talking is because I agreed to fake a relationship with Massimo in front of the cameras.“Oh, come off it, Bonnie. You know that's not true,” I counter.“Of course it's true. I checked your social media and your followers have tripled overnight. A lot of people are interested in you now.”Well, while that might be the case, it also didn't mean I wasn't getting a lot of hate either. I can recall seeing a post about Massimo and I and the comments had been ruthless. Every single person had thought

(Massimo)..DINNER ENDED UP BEING a disastrous affair. I should have expected it. The deadly combination of my mother and my ex-girlfriend Katrina, can scare any poor woman out of her mind. They didn't have any mercy on Pamela with the subtle shade, and I had to step in over and over again, before things escalated.“So what do you do in your spare time?” My mother poses as a harmless question when her interior motive is to see if Pamela had any redeeming qualities beyond being my wife.Fortunately, Pamela doesn't read the room quickly enough. “Oh, I read,” she answers in a steady voice. “And I paint as well. Not always but I make time every once in a while.”“Paint?” My mother's eyebrows are raised in disappointment. “How … interesting.”Katrina snorts into her drink.I shoot her a glare before turning back to my mother. “Not everyone is blessed with artistic skills, I must say. I spent years trying to learn to paint but it never worked out for me. Pamela is indeed very lucky

(Pamela)..THE DINING HALL looks like something out of a period drama.A grand chandelier hangs by the center, casting warm, golden lights across the table. And speaking of the table, it is long enough to host a thousand people all at once. But dinner has only been set for six. How extravagant. By the entrance, Massimo waits, handsome and tall and ravishing. Oh my gosh, did I just say ravishing? What's wrong with me?Anyway, he gently takes my hand when I reach him, the lukewarm expression on his face giving way to something brighter. His eyes slowly drink me in, and I can see the silent approval clouding his gaze.“You look … amazing in that dress,” he whispers.“Why, thank you,” I can't stop my smile. “I'm flattered.”“Shall we?”With a sweep, he leads me into the dining hall where a ton of maids glide around, balancing trays of fried chicken, glazed beef, and some other hot delicacies I can’t quite make out. Probably Italian food.My stomach makes that hungry rumble and my

(Pamela)..THE MOMENT I'M DREADING is finally here.“Dinner will soon be served, madam,” the maid announces at the door, with a polite smile. “At exactly 7 p.m sharp.”I can feel my heart beat spike up against my chest. There is no running away from it now. I have to be prepared for all the questions that the Contessa will throw my way at the dinner table. As well as the others.I wonder if I can skip the dinner altogether and eat in my roomWould that be allowed?“Thank you,”I tell the maid with a weary smile of my own.A hint of surprise crosses her face and quickly disappears as soon as it came. I have a feeling that she doesn't receive a lot of “Thank you's” since she started working here.To my surprise, the maid begin to move toward the closet of the large guest room that I'll be staying in for the rest of the weekend. It's a very gorgeous room, but it looks more of an Airbnb than an actual bedroom. “What are you doing?” I ask. “We need to get you ready for the dinner.”I si

(Massimo)..THE DRIVE TO the warehouse is tense. I speed through the quiet and empty streets in my Range Rover, grateful for once that this isn’t NYC with the busy traffic.A lot of possibilities are racing in my mind and I'm trying to make sense of what's happening. I have a million phone calls to make, but I don’t want to get to it just yet.Not until I'm a hundred percent sure that we were infiltrated. "I'm still wondering why Marco's missing,” Kal finally breaks the silence.I grip the steering wheel tighter. "What do you think?”He shrugs, looking out the window. "I don't want to think yet. He was loyal to us, but something smells fishy here. I hope for his sake that he doesn't have anything to do with this.”I don't say anything. We'll figure it out later when we get to that bridge. Right now, my only concern was the stolen shipment. We pull up to the warehouse district twenty minutes later. It's deserted at this hour and doesn’t start operation until much later in the even

  • Be Careful With My Heart    Chapter 33

(Pamela)..FOR A SPLIT SECOND, my mind goes completely blank.I expected anything, anything at all, but that. I don't know which surprises me more; the fact that Massimo was married before or that his wife was dead and he had a statue erected in her image. My heart hammers against my chest as I stare at the stone woman's face again. Her features suddenly look somewhat familiar but I can’t seem to place where or when I must have seen her.Sofia watches me carefully, maybe trying to place my reaction. "I'm sorry. I thought you knew.""No," I shake my head, still trying to process this bombshell. "Not at all.”I guess it's partly my fault. I was too engrossed with fighting Massimo at every given chance to even know who he really was. Maybe if I'd actually done proper research on him, I would have come across this delicate information and not be taken by surprise. But as always, I hadn’t done that or any of the sort. There's a strange tightness in my throat that I can't explain. Why sho

  • Be Careful With My Heart    Chapter 32

(Pamela)..WE BOTH WATCH as Katrina emerges from the lake, water dripping all over her torso in long, zigzag lines. Her blonde hair is glued to her scalp, making all her features pop out in a weird way. Without makeup on her face, she doesn’t look quite as good as she did with them on.She clutches a towel on a stand nearby and wipes herself as she walks towards us, that arrogant smile never leaving her face. The last time I'd seen her was back at the restaurant and even though it was a long time ago, the energy between us hasn’t changed. I still felt that resentment from her and I can’t help but wonder why she doesn't like me. Massimo’s mother's. was understandable but hers made no sense whatsoever. “So pleased to have you home, Pamela,” her high-pitched voice hurt my ears but even more than the fake happiness in it. “I've been wanting to see you again.”“Have you guys met each other before?” Sofia asks, her eyes wandering from me to Katrina and back to me.“Yeah,” Katrina interje

  • Be Careful With My Heart    Chapter 31

(Massimo)..I PUT THE PHONE down and try to breathe through my nose since I got the call.My mind starts going in a hundred different directions trying to figure out who could’ve done this. For the past five years, we haven't had much trouble with our rivals, let alone enemies. Everything had been running really smoothly and by that I mean both sides of my businesses. By day, I’m the CEO of D’Amato Tech, a billion-dollar company that makes software and runs apps for hospitals and banks. I wear suits, shake hands all day long, and smile for photos. People trust me. They think I made it big all on my own.But at night, it’s different. I run something darker, something I inherited from my father: An underground syndicate that deals with illegal drugs and weapons. It’s risky, but it pays well. I keep the two sides of my life far apart from each other even though one helps the other survive. It’s how we’ve stayed untouchable for years.Until now.Someone broke into container 14A and co

  • Be Careful With My Heart    Chapter 30

(Massimo)..“I CAN’T BELIEVE that out of all the girls you could mess around with, you chose her sister,” My mother spits harshly at Kal, who looks even worse standing there like a frightened chicken.“Mama…”“Shut up! You’re such a disgrace to this family. If it weren’t for you, we wouldn’t have been burdened with raising a child out of wedlock. And most importantly, your brother wouldn’t have been pushed to the wall. He wouldn’t have stooped so low to marry that … girl.”While I’m forced to agree with my mother, the condescending tone in her voice when she spoke about Pamela irked me a little bit.“She’s not even Italian!” she continues, her rageful gaze fixed on Kal. “Because of you, we’re bringing a classless, gold-digging American into this family!”“Mama, that’s enough.” I step in. “We shouldn’t discuss such important conversation here. Let’s settle inside first.”“Where is he? My grandson?”I turn and beckon over to one of the nannies carrying Erik from behind me.“Bring him.

  • Be Careful With My Heart    Chapter 29

(Pamela)..I STAND AWKWARDLY, not knowing what to say or do next. Somehow, I manage to keep my smile from slipping, even though it's so obvious that Massimo’s mother doesn’t like me. Sofia, on the other hand, seems to be a bit warmer than her mother. She steps forward, her arms outstretched and before I can understand what’s happening, I’m already wrapped up in her arms. She smells of flowery fragrances that reminds me of a late spring morning.“It’s good to finally have you here,” Sofia says, pulling away just enough to study my face. Up close, she is so pretty, like genuinely the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen. I might not like Massimo all that much, but I can’t deny the fact that good looks do run in the family. “We’ve all been curious to meet the woman who brought my almighty brother to his knees.”Even though she doesn’t say it, the rest of her words hang in the air: No one has ever, in the history of this family, tried to go up against Massimo, of all people. But you hav
