SOFIA

I stormed up to my room as soon as I got back to the manor, my sandals slapping against the marble stairs and my chest tight with frustration. The fight with Adrian in that damn drug lab had left me feeling like I wanted to put my head through a fucking wall, and his words echoed in my head nonstop.

“You joined this world knowing what it was.”

As if I'd signed up for this life with a clear head, and not a heart broken by my dad's death and a desperate need for something (or someone) to hold onto.

I slammed the door behind me, the sound echoing in the quiet room as I marched over to the window. The vineyard stretched out below me looking so green and serene, like it was mocking the storm inside me. I wanted to scream and shake Adrian until he saw what I saw, and he realized that there was a legitimate chance to break free, and build something better. But he'd shut me down, and made me feel stupid for even suggesting it to him.

I dropped onto the bed with a groan, burying my fa

SOFIAThe hike had left my legs aching, but in a good way. It was sort of like the kind of soreness that made you feel alive, as if the mountain air had scrubbed something clean inside me. We returned to the manor in high spirits, with the sun dipping low over the vineyard. Gabriella and Lucia were already arguing about dinner, while Rosa was complaining about her boots being too small and too tight. Elena walked beside me with that little mischievous smile of hers, and I just knew she was cooking up something wicked. She hadn't stopped looking at me since I told her about the fight with Adrian. And now, with the others trailing ahead, she tugged my sleeve gently. “Where do you think he is right now?” she asked. “Probably upstairs with Nonna,” I said. "Great," she said, lowering her voice. "Then we should talk about the plan then. It’s a stupid one really, but it works every time."I raised an eyebrow at her and said, "If this is about seduction techniques from a nineteen-year-old

MARCOThe night air in Long Island was thick with the scent of salt from the nearby sea, mixed with the smell of impending doom. I had waited for this moment for what felt like an eternity, and now it was finally here. It couldn’t have been a better time. Adrian DeLuca was foolishly off in Rome, tangled up with his little bitch. But tonight, I was going to burn down his empire. The DeLuca estate in front of me was an intimidating structure, and it was lit up like a goddamn Christmas tree. It had always been hailed as a fortress, or so they thought. But without Adrian here to keep an eye on things, it was there for the taking.I sat in the back of the black SUV, my fingers drumming on the grip of my pistol. My men were all getting ready in the vehicles around me, and they knew how important tonight was. I’d chosen twenty of the best and most hardened killers from my crew, each of them armed to the teeth with automatics, silencers, and enough explosives to level a city block if things

SOFIAGiulia and I wandered through the vineyard that afternoon, just as the sun started dipping low enough to cast a golden glow over the rows of grapevines, with their leaves rustling softly in the breeze. The air smelled earthy and sweet, and it was a far cry from the concrete jungle of New York. And honestly, after everything that had happened, I needed this kind of peace. Giulia was surprisingly very good company, and her small hand slipped into mine as we walked. She was just this bundle of energy, with curly dark hair and bright blue eyes. She'd been talking nonstop since we left the manor, asking about everything from my dress to why my accent was "funny”. And surprisingly, I was actually enjoying the conversation. "Aunt Sofia, do you like Italy?" she asked, skipping a little to keep up with my strides. She plucked a leaf from a vine and twirled it between her fingers, the she said, "Nonna says it's the best place in the whole world, because we have pasta and gelato and beac

ADRIANI walked into the study of the manor right after breakfast, the heavy wooden doors creaking like they always did, announcing my arrival before I even stepped foot inside. The room was thick with the scent of old leather and cigar smoke, the kind that clung to the walls from decades of these family gatherings. Sunlight streamed through the tall windows, casting long shadows across the polished oak table that sat in the center. All the adults in the family were seated at the table, with Nonna at the head of the table, her silver hair pulled back in a tight bun and looking every bit like the matriarch she was. Nonno sat beside her, his face buried in the paper, and puffing on a pipe that he'd probably lit hours ago. Then there were my uncles who must have arrived early this morning, or last night. Alessandro was the burly one with the permanent scowl, and Matteo was the slimmer one, who was always fidgeting with his rings. Aunts Lucia and Gabriella were seated beside them, whisp

SOFIABreakfast was the most chaotic thing I’d ever seen. Everyone was gathered at the table, and it looked like an actual feast. I honestly felt like I’d just set foot into the Hogwarts great hall when I walked in and saw the table lined with freshly baked bread, some freshly picked fruit, strips of bacon, baskets of muffin, jars of honey, cheese, scrambled eggs, some salad, and a bunch of other things I couldn’t even look at. It was just so much, and I couldn’t believe this was just a regular breakfast at the DeLuca manor. Adrian sat at one end of the table with me on his right side, while his grandmother sat at the other end with his grandfather by the side. I remembered Melissa saying he was the second husband she’d taken, and he wasn’t Adrian’s biological father. But he was a nice old man, and he’d complimented my earrings after kissing my hand when we walked into the dining room. Aunt Rosa was seated closer to Nonna, and she didn’t even look up once, which made me realize she
