In her previous life, Victoria Vance lived as the overlooked, plus-size hidden wife of billionaire CEO Julian Sterling under a cold contract marriage. Mocked by high-society elites and taken for granted by Julian, her life was upended when an unexpected pregnancy threatened Julian's lifelong devotion to his slender childhood savior, Chloe Bennett, who framed Victoria and caused a tragic fall. When a sudden bio-hazard catastrophe struck, Julian believed Chloe's forged contamination files and left a bleeding Victoria locked in a vault while carrying Chloe to safety. Dying in the dark, Victoria's love turned to ice. Waking up ninety days before the apocalypse, she wastes no time on tears. Armed with future knowledge, she signs an unconditional divorce, liquidates her assets, and utilizes her hidden master engineering skills to construct an impenetrable subterranean fortress. When the world collapses and Julian's billions become worthless, he and Chloe face starvation at her blast doors, only to discover that the plus-size ex-wife he left to die is now the absolute sovereign ruler of the new world, demanding complete submission before she grants any form of mercy or intimacy.

Chapter 1

The Ash of Vows

The air inside the master bedroom tasted like old dust and expensive perfume that had long since lost its charm. Victoria stood in front of the full-length mirror, her fingers resting lightly on the heavy silk of a dress that felt more like a shroud than clothing. In the reflection, her full plus-size frame filled the glass, a striking contrast to the fragile, airbrushed ideals that the high-society elites worshiped. Her dark hair was pinned back in a severe knot, exposing a neck that had spent years bowing to a man who never once looked down to appreciate it.

Across the room, the king-sized bed was still warm on one side. Julian Sterling was not in it. He never was on nights when Chloe Bennett had a minor crisis or a social engagement that required her billionaire protector to hold her hand.

Victoria traced the edge of the mahogany dresser, her heart beating with a strange, heavy rhythm. Just hours ago, she had drawn her last breath in a freezing, subterranean vault three hundred feet below the city streets. She remembered the suffocating dark, the taste of copper in her mouth, and the sound of Julian's voice through the reinforced steel door as he chose to carry Chloe to safety while leaving his legal wife to suffocate in the biohazard zone. She remembered the biting realization that her entire marriage had been nothing more than a convenient cage built by a man who looked at her with polite, cold tolerance.

Death had not been peaceful, but waking up ninety days before the sky turned red and the first toxic rain fell was a violent awakening.

The digital clock on the nightstand blinked softly. 3:15 AM.

The bedroom door clicked open with a soft, expensive sound. Julian stepped inside, loosening his silk tie with one hand, his sharp jawline shadowed with fatigue. He looked every bit the ruthless titan of Sterling Enterprises, tall, imposing, and entirely wrapped in his own arrogance. He paused when he saw her standing there in the dark.

"Victoria," he said, his voice a low, baritone rasp that used to make her chest ache with desperate affection. "Why are you still awake? Go back to sleep. You know Chloe is staying in the east wing guest suite tonight. She had another panic attack after the charity gala. I had to stay with her until she calmed down."

In the past, those words would have twisted like a knife in Victoria's stomach. She would have apologized for waiting up, would have asked if Chloe was alright, would have played the part of the understanding, quiet wife.

Now, a cold, sharp amusement curled at the corners of her mouth.

She turned slowly from the mirror, her hazel eyes locking onto his. "I am awake because I am finally doing something about this farce, Julian."

Julian frowned, stepping further into the room. He tossed his jacket over the back of an armchair, his dark eyes narrowing with a flash of irritation. "Victoria, do not start this tonight. I am exhausted. If this is about Chloe being here again, we have discussed this. She has no one else. Her family estate is tied up in litigation, and she is fragile. You have everything you could possibly want under this roof. Do not turn into a nagging wife."

Victoria let out a short, dry laugh that lacked any humor. "Everything I want. A cold house, a husband who treats me like an embarrassing family heirloom he keeps hidden from the press, and a bed that is half empty while you play savior to a woman who has spent years making sure I remain invisible."

Julian stepped closer, his imposing height closing the distance between them. There was a dark, magnetic tension in the air, the kind of heavy physical friction that had always bound them together in the quiet, shadowed hours of the night. He reached out, his warm fingers wrapping around her bare upper arm, his grip firm, demanding, carrying the casual dominance of a man who believed he owned every inch of her.

"Do not test me, Victoria," he murmured, his breath brushing against her forehead as he towered over her. "You are my wife. You have my name, my black cards, and a life most women would kill for. Stop acting ungrateful."

For a second, the old reflex flickered, the intoxicating pull of his body close to hers, the heat of his skin reminding her of the rare nights when he used his touch to silence her complaints. In their past life, that touch would have melted her resolve. She would have leaned into him, letting the physical intimacy cloud her judgment, trading her dignity for the brief illusion of being desired.

Instead, Victoria felt only a profound, freezing disgust.

She twisted her arm sharply, wrenching her skin out of his grip with a suddenness that caught him completely off guard. Julian blinked, his hand lingering in empty air for a fraction of a second, his expression shifting from annoyance to stark, unadulterated shock. No one ever walked away from Julian Sterling. No one ever rejected his touch.

"You think my silence was loyalty, Julian," Victoria said, her voice steady and low, carrying a terrifying weight that made the hairs on the back of his neck stand up. "You think because I am quiet, because I do not scream or break things, that I am yours to pick up and put down whenever it pleases your heroic conscience."

"What is wrong with you?" Julian demanded, a sharp edge of anger cutting through his fatigue. His chest rose and fell heavily beneath his open collar, his dominant instincts flaring at her defiance. He stepped into her space again, closing the gap, his hand reaching out to cup the side of her face, his thumb pressing hard against her cheekbone in a possessive, punishing caress designed to force her compliance. "Look at me. You do not talk back to me."

Victoria did not flinch. She leaned into the palm of his hand, her gaze locked onto his dark eyes, so close she could smell the faint scent of scotch and cedar on his skin. The physical attraction between them was an undeniable, toxic chain, heavy with years of unspoken chemistry and midnight collisions. Julian's breathing hitched slightly, his pupils dilating as his gaze dropped to her lips, his body automatically shifting into the familiar, predatory rhythm of domestic dominance.

He leaned down, his mouth hovering inches from hers, expecting the usual submission, the soft sigh that always preceded him taking what he wanted.

Instead, Victoria raised her left hand and pressed her palm flat against his hard chest, shoving him backward with a strength that left him momentarily speechless.

Julian stumbled back a full step, staring at her as if she had lost her mind.

Victoria reached into the pocket of her dressing gown, pulled out a thick manila folder, and dropped it onto the center of the bed with a heavy thud.

"Sign it," she said softly.

"What is this?" Julian asked, his voice dropping to a dangerous, low rumble as he looked down at the papers.

"Unconditional divorce papers," Victoria replied, her voice as calm as still water. "I am releasing you from your tragic obligation to me, Julian. You can marry Chloe, you can take her to whatever luxury estate you want, and you can play the knight in shining armor until the end of the earth. I want nothing from you. No shares, no property, no alimony. Just my freedom."

Julian stared at the folder, then up at her face, a dark, furious disbelief twisting his sharp features. "A divorce? You think you can threaten me with a divorce because I spent a night making sure a traumatized woman was safe? You are delusional, Victoria. You cannot survive outside of this house. Without me, you are nothing. You have no independent wealth, no standing, no one who would even look twice at you."

He lunged forward, closing the distance with terrifying speed, his hands gripping both of her shoulders and pinning her back against the edge of the mattress. The heat of his body pressed hard against hers, an aggressive, erotic display of masculine force meant to terrify her into submission. His breath was hot against her ear, his voice trembling with a mixture of rage and a strange, panicked desperation he refused to name.

"You are staying right here, Victoria," he whispered fiercely, his fingers biting into her flesh through the silk. "You are my wife. I do not grant divorces, and I certainly do not let what belongs to me walk out the door because you are having a hysterical episode."

Victoria looked up at him, a cold, knowing smile touching her lips. "Ninety days, Julian. That is all the time you have left before the world you think you own burns entirely to ash."

Before he could demand an explanation, the heavy mahogany front door of the mansion echoed with a violent, frantic pounding from downstairs, followed by the shrill, terrified sound of Chloe screaming for Julian's help.

Julian froze, his hands loosening on her shoulders as his instincts as a protector flared toward the other room.

Victoria did not blink. She slipped out from beneath his reach, leaving him standing alone in the center of the bedroom, staring down at the divorce papers while the chaos downstairs pulled him away into the dark.
