BENEATH THE FACADE

Behind the façade of wealth and power, a web of secrets awaits.

Chapter 43

Caleb's POV:

It was at his birthday party that he proposed to her.

The venue wasn’t anything extravagant. Small-sized, really. But big enough to fit the cars that lined the compound like ornaments on a cake. Camries. Highlanders. A couple of jeeps with tinted windows and plate numbers that didn’t need introductions. That alone said everything—Alexander Kingston now rolled with the big boys.

And maybe, just maybe… that was why Ava chose him.

Like ant to sugar.

The party itself was intimate—friends, family, a few of his work people. No loud music, no celebrity DJ. Just soft laughter, quiet jazz humming from the speakers, and that faint smell of grilled chicken and money. Everyone there looked like they belonged. Everyone but me.

I watched from the side, holding a sweating glass of malt, my shirt clinging to my back in places I didn’t want to think about. Alex moved through the crowd like he ow

Behind the façade of wealth and power, a web of secrets awaits.Chapter 46Caleb's POV:“Ava, it’s been three months since you walked out on Alexander,” I said gently, leaning against the doorway, watching her pace the length of my living room. “You’ve got to try and move forward.”She stopped, her arms crossed tightly over her chest like she was holding herself together.“Move on?” Her voice cracked with disbelief. “Caleb, you say it like it’s just a switch I can flip.”I didn’t answer right away. She turned to face me fully then, her eyes red from too many sleepless nights and tears she thought no one saw.“I gave him everything,” she whispered. “My trust. My heart. My body. Everything.”Her voice trembled with the weight of it. “He was the only man I’d ever been with, Caleb. I saved myself for him because I believed him when he said forever.”I swallowed the lump rising in my throat. She looked away, blinking fast. “And what did I get in return? Lies. Betrayal. The kind of pain tha

Behind the façade of wealth and power, a web of secrets awaits.Chapter 45Caleb's POV: She arrived when Emily turned a month. Tall, slim with a curvy shape. She had deep blue eyes like that of a mermaid. Her red hair fell on her skin like a second clothing. She was beautiful in every way.A small boy aged around 5, stood with his little fingers clutched tightly to the woman who appeared to be his mother. Had red chubby cheeks, big brown eyes and a striking resemblance with the woman. She knocked once more. The horror on his face when he opened the door to see her. She was the least person he had been expecting. What do you mean she had flown all the way from Newyork?“What are you doing here for goodness sake?”,he said slamming the door“I told you to always call if you need anything”And on her own end, immediately the door was opened, she broke into tears. “Why did you deceive me? Why did you abandon me and Eddy for all these years? You, heartless being. Its been three long year

BENEATH THE FACADEBehind the façade of wealth and power, a web of secrets awaits.Chapter 44Caleb's POV:A week after the proposal, she moved in with him.No wedding bells. No family gathering. No traditional rites. No bride price exchanged. There were no formal introductions, no elders seated under canopies, no music drifting from speakers on a Saturday morning. Just her, her bag, and a new address.I kept waiting for some sort of announcement. Maybe a church ceremony down the line or a simple court registry post. But nothing came. And what surprised me the most—what hit the hardest—was that she didn’t seem to mind. Not even a little.Ava, who used to talk about walking down the aisle with her father by her side. Ava, who once showed me screenshots of wedding dresses she liked. She let it all go without a fight. And Alex? He didn’t say much either. He had his reasons, I assumed—private ones. Reasons only he knew. Reasons that, in time, would make everything clearer… and darker. But

BENEATH THE FACADEBehind the façade of wealth and power, a web of secrets awaits.Chapter 42Caleb's POV:Love doesn’t always scream. Sometimes, it stays quiet too long—until it spoils. At first, I pretended nothing had changed. I smiled when I saw them together. Forced laughter into places it didn’t belong. I even teased Alex once, nudging his shoulder and saying, “You’re lucky, you know that?”He grinned like he’d just won a prize. “She’s one of a kind, isn’t she?”Yes. She was.But she wasn’t his to have.At least… not in the way I had imagined it.She was the girl I noticed in small ways—how she hummed under her breath when she was deep in thought, how her fingers curled around the handle of her mug when she drank something hot, how she always looked people in the eye, like she wanted them to feel seen. She was fire wrapped in softness, and somehow, she made everything around her warmer. But I never said it out loud.So he did.And when she started laughing more at his jokes than

BENEATH THE FACADEBehind the façade of wealth and power, a web of secrets awaits.Chapter 41Caleb's POV:The first time I felt it—really felt it—we were sitting beneath the old neem tree behind Ava’s house. Just the three of us. Me. Ava. Alex. Like nothing had changed. Like time hadn’t pulled us in different directions and stitched new layers into our lives. The late afternoon sun was melting into the horizon, casting gold across the walls and painting shadows over the yard. That part of the day always felt sacred somehow—quiet, slow, forgiving. You could hear birds in the distance, and the breeze carried the soft sweetness of guava from a nearby tree. It was the kind of air that made you want to close your eyes and believe in simpler things.Ava came out holding a tray—banana bread, still warm, with the edges a little too brown. She laughed as she set it down on the bench between us, brushing flour off her dress."Don’t judge it too quickly," she said, handing us cold drinks. "I bu
