Chapter 2

Author: Marvelous Meow
The day Mom was set to be discharged, Samuel promised he'd come pick us up.

At 10:00 am, after the nurse pulled out the last IV catheter, Mom changed her clothes on the edge of the bed.

In the blink of an eye, two hours had passed. Every few minutes, she'd glance at the door. "Is he stuck in traffic?"

"Probably."

"Give him a call and tell him to take his time."

I didn't.

At 12:30 pm, Samuel finally sent me a message. "Willow's place has a leak, and her neighbor downstairs is raising hell with property management. I need to take care of it on her behalf. Go ahead and arrange Rowena's discharge without me. I'll come over as soon as I'm done."

I locked my screen and called a ride.

Mom sensed something was wrong and asked softly, "Is he helping that Ms. Emerson again?"

I straightened her clothes. "Yep."

After a moment of silence, she pinched the hem of her clothes. "Janice... have I become a burden to you?"

I crouched down in front of her. "This has nothing to do with you."

As soon as the words left my mouth, the door to the ward swung open. Willow walked in with a fruit basket. Her filming assistant trailed behind her, training the camera on the fruit basket in her hands.

"Mrs. Fischer, I heard you were being discharged today, so I came to see you off. Samuel couldn't make it, so he asked me to come in his place."

I looked at the camera. "Turn it off."

Her assistant looked a little awkward.

Willow raised her hand, but she didn't tell him to stop filming. "Don't get the wrong idea, Janice. I've been working on home makeovers for women who live alone lately.

"When my followers heard Samuel had helped me fix a leaky pipe, they all praised him for being such a responsible man. I figured I'd stop by to see Mrs. Fischer while I'm at it and set the record straight for you."

"Set what straight, exactly?"

Her smile faltered for a fraction of a second. "My relationship with Samuel, of course. There's nothing going on between us."

"My husband couldn't be bothered to show up, so he sent his ex-girlfriend to bring my mom a fruit basket instead, all while filming it on video. That certainly clears things up."

Willow struggled to maintain her smile.

The very next second, Samuel barged in. The moment he walked in, he noticed Willow's misty eyes. "What's the matter?"

"It's nothing. Janice doesn't want me here, so I'll just take my leave."

When she turned around, her wrist brushed against the edge of the fruit basket. He hastily caught her. "Careful, the floor's wet."

Then, he shifted his attention toward me. "Willow came here out of the goodness of her heart to pick up Rowena in my place. Did you really have to put her on the spot?"

Mom hurriedly waved her hands. "No, no. Ms. Emerson has been very polite."

Mom had just gotten surgery, and her voice was barely above a whisper. Yet here she was, apologizing to them on my behalf. It felt as though a boulder had settled on my chest.

"Samuel Sullivan, you were the one who promised to come pick us up."

"The leak could cause problems with the neighbors downstairs. Willow can't handle that on her own!"

"It's her apartment. Why can't she handle it on her own?"

Samuel scowled. "Several of her neighbors were ganging up on her. Do you expect me to just turn a blind eye? You've really changed, Janice."

Willow gently tugged at his sleeve. "Stop it. Mrs. Fischer isn't well. I just… can't help but feel that if Janice can't even tolerate something this trivial, you're going to have a hard time with her in the future."

Samuel didn't refute her. He led her out, and when he walked past me, he lowered his voice and said, "We'll talk about this when we get home. Let's not make ourselves a laughingstock in front of outsiders."

…

Half an hour later, that video made it onto the trending list. I had a cold look on my face as I told Willow to turn off the camera in the clip.

The edited video was titled "My ex is married now, and somehow, it's a crime for me to visit his elders on his behalf." The comments section was filled with netizens calling me petty, mean, and ungrateful.

Mom chanced upon the video in the car. She stared at the screen for what felt like an eternity before locking her phone.

After returning home, she took her pill organizer out of her luggage. "Janice, perhaps it's best if I return to the countryside tomorrow. You've been married for so many years. I don't want your marriage to fall apart because of me."

Mom kept insisting that she was fine, but her hand never left the spot on her chest where she'd recently had stitches. I helped her lie down. Then, I turned around to contact my lawyer, Max Smith.

As soon as the divorce agreement was successfully sent, Samuel dropped a message into the family group chat. "Willow is coming over for dinner tonight. Since Rowena's home, we can clear up this misunderstanding once and for all."

Three months after the divorce, Mom completed her rehabilitation. On her first day back home, she insisted on going to the market to buy fish. I couldn't talk her out of it, so I had no choice but to push a shopping cart behind her. Mom took her time picking through the produce, complaining that the tomatoes weren't red enough and the ribs were too fatty. When we reached a flower stall, she came to an abrupt halt. "Our balcony could use some life. Let's buy a couple of potted plants."Thus, I picked out two pots of jasmine. After we returned home, Mom sat on a small stool and directed me to repot the plants. "Pack the soil down a little more, or the roots won't take hold properly." "Got it.""Don't give them too much water. Anything in excess can end up doing more harm than good." I looked up at her. Mom pretended not to notice and turned around to go into the kitchen to braise the fish. …After the project went live, the first batch of senior-friendly equipment was

Samuel didn't meet up with Willow, after all. He handed the call recording and the company documents to the cops. The investigation results came back in no time. The so-called original documents Willow claimed to have were actually copies she'd taken from the company computer while she was filming a promotional video. She had used them not only to blackmail Samuel but also to sell confidential product information to a competing company. When the cops tracked her down, she was already at the airport. Initially, she denied it. Eventually, she shifted all the blame onto Samuel. "He was the one who said he'd do anything for me. When I asked him to come over in the middle of the night, he came. When I asked him to lie to his wife, he did that too. He was the one who had no boundaries. Why should I take all the blame?" When her words made their way back to the company, even the last few shareholders who'd still been supporting Samuel fell silent. The investment fell through, and th

The proposal was far more detailed than I'd imagined. Willow would deliberately damage household appliances in advance and get Samuel to come over and fix them. She would edit secretly recorded footage into suggestive clips and pair them with titles like "A Decade-Long Promise" and "The One Who Got Away".Every time traffic to her account increased, she would raise her advertising rates. Samuel hadn't been completely in the dark. Their chat history showed that Willow had once asked him if he was willing to cooperate with the filming.Samuel: "Keep my face out of it. Janice will overthink if she sees it."He was well aware that I'd be hurt, so he chose to hide it from me. The operations employee also provided unreleased footage. That day, before Willow arrived at Mom's ward with the fruit basket, she'd smiled at the camera and said, "The look on Samuel's wife's face when she sees her husband's ex taking care of her mother is going to be priceless!"The moment the footage was

After returning to Norchester, I moved into the rehabilitation hospital with Mom. The company I'd resigned from five years ago reached out to ask if I was willing to return. "I'll rejoin, but only if it's at the Norchester branch." The human resources representative agreed without a second thought. On my third day at work, I was assigned a smart eldercare community project. The client was interested in the senior-friendly interactive system I'd designed five years ago. After my first presentation, the project lead shook my hand. "Ms. Fischer, your design addresses two major problems for seniors—accidental inputs and emergency alerts. Why haven't you officially launched it?" All of a sudden, I recalled how Samuel had told me that elderly users had little purchasing power and zero commercial value. Yet, when Willow said she was afraid of the dark, he had been willing to customize the entire system just to give her personalized nighttime lighting. "I chose the wrong business

Samuel didn't touch either document. "Leave us. I'd like to talk to my wife alone." Mr. Smith looked at me. I shook my head. "That won't be necessary." Samuel stared at me, anger simmering in his eyes. "Do you really have to air our dirty laundry in public, Janice?""My lawyer isn't an outsider. He's my legal representative." I paused for a beat before continuing, "You, on the other hand, won't be family much longer." The moment the words left my lips, a slight tremor ran through his fingertips. In the past, every time we fought, I'd always waited for him to offer me an olive branch. A meal together, a bouquet of flowers, or even a simple "Cut it out" had been enough to make me stay. He had probably never imagined that one day, I would speak to him in such a polite, aloof tone."My company's raising capital right now. If you sue me, dozens of employees will be affected." "All I'm asking is that you stop violating my intellectual property rights and recalculate the revenue

When Mom came to, the first thing she asked about was the bracelet. "I seriously didn't take it, Janice!"I held her hand. "The surveillance cameras caught everything. Willow was the one who put it in your bag."Mom froze for a couple of seconds before tearing up. "Does Samuel know?""It doesn't matter anymore."Mr. Smith sent the surveillance footage into the Sullivan family's group chat at my request.Layla immediately called me. "Willow knows she was in the wrong, Janice. Why did you have to send it in the group chat? It was just a momentary lapse of judgment on her part. She didn't mean to hurt anyone! "Besides, your mother's fine now, isn't she? We're family. You really shouldn't make a mountain out of a molehill!"I pressed stop on the recording. "Minor or not, the cops will be the judge of that."The other end of the line fell silent. Willow sent me a voice message in no time. "I've apologized to Mrs. Fischer, Janice. I only meant to leave my bracelet there for a mome
