Chapter 4

Author: Marvelous Meow
"What does your company have to do with me?" I set the pen down. "Weren't you the one who said I'd received a share of the company's profits, so it wasn't like I worked for free? Since it was just a one-off transaction, I'm under no obligation to keep authorizing the use of my work."

Samuel stared at me for several seconds. "We can negotiate. How much money do you want?"

"I want a divorce."

"I can give you anything but that." He was still convinced that I was simply attempting to get more compensation out of him.

That certainty exhausted me more than any insult ever could.

Mom abruptly clutched her chest. When I caught her, Willow gasped. "My bracelet's missing!"

She felt all over her wrists and pockets before fretting, "It was left to me by my grandmother. It was still on my wrist just a moment ago!"

Layla immediately sprang to her feet. "Did you drop it in the room?"

Everyone searched high and low, but her bracelet was nowhere to be found.

Willow looked at the canvas bag beside the couch. It belonged to Mom.

It contained her medical records and post-surgery medications. We hadn't had a chance to unpack it since she came home from the hospital.

Willow hesitated for a moment before asking, "Could it... be in that bag?"

Mom was caught off guard. "I never touched any of your belongings."

"Oh, I didn't mean it like that," Willow said softly. "Mrs. Fischer and I were sitting on the couch together earlier. Perhaps it accidentally caught on something in your bag. We won't know until we take a look."

I tucked the bag behind me. "You have no right to go through Mom's belongings."

Layla sneered. "We're just going to take a quick look. It's not like it'll kill you. If she seriously didn't take it, what's there to be afraid of?"

Mom was so anxious that her breathing began to tremble. "Let them check, Janice. I didn't take it!"

She reached for the bag, but I refused to let it go. While we tussled over it, the zipper of the canvas bag was yanked open, spilling pill organizers, medical records, and hospital bills all over the floor. A silver bracelet, tangled around a bag of medicine, tumbled out.

The living room plunged into pin-drop silence. Layla was the first to break it. "Well, look at that. It was in there."

The last bit of color drained from Mom's face. "It wasn't me! I didn't..."

Willow picked up the bracelet and hurriedly explained, "It probably fell into the bag by accident. Mrs. Fischer, you just had surgery. It's totally normal for you to be forgetful."

Even though she sounded like she was helping Mom out, her words only reinforced the suspicion that Mom had taken her bracelet.

I looked up at Samuel. "We have surveillance cameras in here. Check the footage."

His brows knitted together. "We've found the bracelet. Let's not blow this out of proportion."

"I said, check the surveillance footage."

"Willow's willing to let this go. What more do you want from her?"

A derisive chuckle escaped my lips. "Mom's the one being framed. Since when does Willow get to decide whether to let this matter go or not?"

Mom's body suddenly swayed. The heart rate monitor on her wrist began blaring.

She clutched her chest and slowly slid down the wall. I dropped to my knees and called out to her.

Samuel was about to rush over, but Willow abruptly clutched her wrist. The clasp of that bracelet had somehow torn open her wound.

Layla hurriedly stopped Samuel. "Willow's bleeding! Check on her first."

I looked up at Samuel. "Call an ambulance for Mom."

He pulled out his phone, while Willow leaned against his shoulder. Her face was as pale as a sheet of paper. "I can't breathe, Samuel… I think I'm having another panic attack."

Samuel supported her. "Rowena has you, so I'll be rushing Willow to the hospital first."

I planted myself in front of the door. "Willow barely scraped her skin!"

"Severe panic attacks can induce shock. You don't know what you're talking about, so don't jump to conclusions," he said calmly. "The ambulance is already on its way. There's no point in me staying here."

As Mom lay on the floor, her breathing grew fainter. Willow, on the other hand, clutched his lapels, whimpering that she was scared.

Five years ago, when I fell unconscious with a high fever, Samuel had rushed me to the hospital. He'd stayed by my side all night.

When I came to, his eyes were bloodshot as he told me, "No matter what happens from now on, I'll never let you face it on your own."

I'd clung to that promise and made excuses for him for five long years. However, I'd finally run out of excuses.

I stepped aside. "Go ahead."

Samuel took one look at me. "I'll come back and have a proper conversation with you once Rowena's condition stabilizes."

The moment the door clicked shut, the ambulance sirens drew near. Mom was rushed into the emergency room.

The doctor explained that since she was still recovering from surgery, the emotional distress had triggered a severe cardiac arrhythmia. Fortunately, she'd been brought to the hospital in time.

I waited outside the emergency room and pulled up the surveillance footage from home. Willow had deliberately stuffed her bracelet into the canvas bag while Mom wasn't looking. Mom hadn't so much as laid a finger on Willow.

I saved the footage and sent it to Mr. Smith, along with the patent certificate, five years' worth of design drafts, and the divorce agreement.

…

At 2:00 am, Samuel finally texted me. "Willow's condition has stabilized. Stop using your mother's illness to force me into a divorce. Let's talk after you calm down."

I left him on read.

When the nurse wheeled Mom out of the emergency room, I took off my wedding ring and placed it in the envelope with the divorce agreement.

Three months after the divorce, Mom completed her rehabilitation. On her first day back home, she insisted on going to the market to buy fish. I couldn't talk her out of it, so I had no choice but to push a shopping cart behind her. Mom took her time picking through the produce, complaining that the tomatoes weren't red enough and the ribs were too fatty. When we reached a flower stall, she came to an abrupt halt. "Our balcony could use some life. Let's buy a couple of potted plants."Thus, I picked out two pots of jasmine. After we returned home, Mom sat on a small stool and directed me to repot the plants. "Pack the soil down a little more, or the roots won't take hold properly." "Got it.""Don't give them too much water. Anything in excess can end up doing more harm than good." I looked up at her. Mom pretended not to notice and turned around to go into the kitchen to braise the fish. …After the project went live, the first batch of senior-friendly equipment was

Samuel didn't meet up with Willow, after all. He handed the call recording and the company documents to the cops. The investigation results came back in no time. The so-called original documents Willow claimed to have were actually copies she'd taken from the company computer while she was filming a promotional video. She had used them not only to blackmail Samuel but also to sell confidential product information to a competing company. When the cops tracked her down, she was already at the airport. Initially, she denied it. Eventually, she shifted all the blame onto Samuel. "He was the one who said he'd do anything for me. When I asked him to come over in the middle of the night, he came. When I asked him to lie to his wife, he did that too. He was the one who had no boundaries. Why should I take all the blame?" When her words made their way back to the company, even the last few shareholders who'd still been supporting Samuel fell silent. The investment fell through, and th

The proposal was far more detailed than I'd imagined. Willow would deliberately damage household appliances in advance and get Samuel to come over and fix them. She would edit secretly recorded footage into suggestive clips and pair them with titles like "A Decade-Long Promise" and "The One Who Got Away".Every time traffic to her account increased, she would raise her advertising rates. Samuel hadn't been completely in the dark. Their chat history showed that Willow had once asked him if he was willing to cooperate with the filming.Samuel: "Keep my face out of it. Janice will overthink if she sees it."He was well aware that I'd be hurt, so he chose to hide it from me. The operations employee also provided unreleased footage. That day, before Willow arrived at Mom's ward with the fruit basket, she'd smiled at the camera and said, "The look on Samuel's wife's face when she sees her husband's ex taking care of her mother is going to be priceless!"The moment the footage was

After returning to Norchester, I moved into the rehabilitation hospital with Mom. The company I'd resigned from five years ago reached out to ask if I was willing to return. "I'll rejoin, but only if it's at the Norchester branch." The human resources representative agreed without a second thought. On my third day at work, I was assigned a smart eldercare community project. The client was interested in the senior-friendly interactive system I'd designed five years ago. After my first presentation, the project lead shook my hand. "Ms. Fischer, your design addresses two major problems for seniors—accidental inputs and emergency alerts. Why haven't you officially launched it?" All of a sudden, I recalled how Samuel had told me that elderly users had little purchasing power and zero commercial value. Yet, when Willow said she was afraid of the dark, he had been willing to customize the entire system just to give her personalized nighttime lighting. "I chose the wrong business

Samuel didn't touch either document. "Leave us. I'd like to talk to my wife alone." Mr. Smith looked at me. I shook my head. "That won't be necessary." Samuel stared at me, anger simmering in his eyes. "Do you really have to air our dirty laundry in public, Janice?""My lawyer isn't an outsider. He's my legal representative." I paused for a beat before continuing, "You, on the other hand, won't be family much longer." The moment the words left my lips, a slight tremor ran through his fingertips. In the past, every time we fought, I'd always waited for him to offer me an olive branch. A meal together, a bouquet of flowers, or even a simple "Cut it out" had been enough to make me stay. He had probably never imagined that one day, I would speak to him in such a polite, aloof tone."My company's raising capital right now. If you sue me, dozens of employees will be affected." "All I'm asking is that you stop violating my intellectual property rights and recalculate the revenue

When Mom came to, the first thing she asked about was the bracelet. "I seriously didn't take it, Janice!"I held her hand. "The surveillance cameras caught everything. Willow was the one who put it in your bag."Mom froze for a couple of seconds before tearing up. "Does Samuel know?""It doesn't matter anymore."Mr. Smith sent the surveillance footage into the Sullivan family's group chat at my request.Layla immediately called me. "Willow knows she was in the wrong, Janice. Why did you have to send it in the group chat? It was just a momentary lapse of judgment on her part. She didn't mean to hurt anyone! "Besides, your mother's fine now, isn't she? We're family. You really shouldn't make a mountain out of a molehill!"I pressed stop on the recording. "Minor or not, the cops will be the judge of that."The other end of the line fell silent. Willow sent me a voice message in no time. "I've apologized to Mrs. Fischer, Janice. I only meant to leave my bracelet there for a mome
