Chapter 5

Author: Perfect Timing
When I arrived home, I noticed the lights were still on. One look at the garage told me Asher was back early, and I could hear voices coming from inside.

The moment I opened the door, a blast of strong perfume hit me. Then I looked down. A pair of high heels sat neatly on the doormat.

Melanie was sprawled out on the couch in the living room, wearing my silk nightgown. The moment she heard the door open, she straightened up slightly, a flash of surprise crossing her face.

I gave her a slow once-over, my tone cold. "Do you really have to take everything that's mine? Even my nightgown?"

Her face crumpled. She glanced at Asher, who'd just stepped out of the kitchen, her teeth sinking into her lip, eyes glassy with unshed tears.

Asher could never resist that look. He walked straight toward me, positioning himself between us like he was her shield.

"Valerie, Mel's drunk, so I brought her home. If you've got a problem with that, take it up with me. Yeah, I ignored your calls today, but

After the divorce, I took Mom and Dad to unwind on a private island overseas. When word got around that Asher's wedding back home was coming up, Mom started getting uneasy. She thought my marriage to Asher had ruined my future. But I didn't care. I just told Mom and Dad to relax and watch how things played out.And sure enough, within days, new rumors started swirling. Asher was calling off the wedding, and Melanie had confronted him by the shore, demanding he marry her.Asher had finally learned the truth.Inside the file I'd handed him was the investigation report on the fire's cause. The storage room curtains had caught fire, setting the clutter inside ablaze and sparking the whole blaze. And the attic, which almost no one ever visited all year, had its window shattered by a rock someone threw. It was clear beyond question that this was arson. The police combed through the surveillance footage and tracked down the man who'd smashed the glass. After being questioned, he confes

Eric pushed himself up slowly, then staggered over to Teresa's portrait and sank to his knees, his apologies spilling out in a flood."Teresa, I failed you. I shouldn't have been drinking that night. I shouldn't have fallen for Ash's bullshit about you just faking it. You died in agony because of me! It's all my fault. If I'd gone to save you, would you still be alive?"His eyes were bloodshot from crying as he suddenly jabbed a finger at Melanie, his voice raw with fury as he launched into a fierce tirade."It's all because of her! Ash, Teresa never wanted you two together. I said from the start that forcing a relationship with her would only bring trouble. And now look at what's happened."If Teresa had agreed to your relationship, she'd have died even worse than this. She hasn't even been gone a full day, and Melanie's already sniffing around her estate? She's not even human!"Melanie recoiled behind Asher, biting her lip as tears welled up in her eyes."Ash, how can Eric say

Asher tapped the divorce agreement on the table, then looked up with a scoff."Valerie, my mom's gone. No one's here to shield you now. You asked for this, so don't come crawling back when you regret it. Once it's done, there's no undoing it."Mom and Dad sat in the crowd, stunned into silence the moment they heard I was going through with the divorce. They used to say that since we'd have to keep crossing paths, a divorce would only fuel the gossip, so I should just hold on and endure it.But this time, they showed up at the funeral and saw Asher flaunting Melanie right out in the open and the whispers getting worse. That was when Dad slammed his hand on the table."Fine. Get the divorce! We never cared about being in-laws with their family anyway. And don't act like you're doing us a favor! You really think Val doesn't have other options?"In my past life, Asher stopped at nothing to destroy my family, waging war on us both in the open and behind the scenes, all to avenge Mela

Asher muttered under his breath, shooting me a venomous glare."This is all fake, isn't it? You hired someone to fake this! A body burned this badly could be anyone! My mom's still out there. I know she is!"I looked at him with quiet pity, then reached over and pulled the white sheet back over Teresa."Don't you recognize the place from the news? Asher, stop lying to yourself. It wasn't just me. Oliver's been trying to get through to you, too. But you chose to bury yourself in that little love story of yours. You killed Teresa."I exposed Asher without mercy.Right as he unlocked his phone, hundreds of WhatsApp messages poured in. Dozens of texts and missed calls lit up his phone.Every single one screamed the same thing—he couldn't care less if Teresa lived or died.Asher dropped to his knees beside Teresa, sobbing like his world had just ended. It took me back to my past life—to the day he found out Melanie had died. That same broken look was on his face now. And yet, when I

Oliver finally got through to Asher, only to hear Melanie's voice instead."Oliver, what's taking you so long to stop Valerie? Don't tell me you got lost," she teased, her syrupy laugh curling through the line. "Everyone's waiting, you know.""Put Asher on, Melanie. Something might've happened with his family," Oliver said quickly.Melanie scoffed."Oh, come on. Not you too. How much did Valerie pay you? I'll have Ash double it."Oliver's voice shook with urgency. "Quit screwing around. Put Asher on."There was a pause. Then Asher picked up."Oliver, did Valerie get in your head, too? Now you're part of her little circus? Knock it off and get back here. Mel's waiting for you."He hung up. The sharp tone of disconnection buzzed in the silence.Oliver lifted his eyes to me, his face drawn with worry.I gave a dry smile, then hit the gas, tearing down the road toward the villa. The rest of the drive was wrapped in tense silence.Flames were already tearing through the villa by
