021 Maya 2.0 Is In The House

I’m in the room I’m sharing with Tessa and Lucy.

They are both taking a nap. My mind is too full of everything to nap. Even though I’m exhausted.

There’s a tap at the door.

I open it and Rhett is there. His ice-blue eyes drilling through me.

“You said there isn’t a us,” Rhett says first, without preamble.

His voice is flat. He has always been direct. He was direct when he loved me and direct when he hated the choices I made.

“There isn’t,” I answer. I don’t look at him when I say it because the look I remember in his eyes is softer than I am allowed to be now. “Not now. Maybe not ever. I need time. I need space. I need to finish what I started.”

“What exactly did you start?”

I step back inviting him in. He steps through and he’s close. I feel him. I feel what I’ve always felt with him. Solid dependability. Staunch loyalty. Burning sexuality.

But I hurt him once. I hurt me. I need to heal myself and I don’t want to take responsibility of anyone else this time.
