Chapter 1

I stopped breathing for a second as I stood outside the hospital room.

Their words hit me like a physical blow, leaving a sharp buzzing sound in my ears.

Before I could slam the door open and demand an explanation, my stepmother, Veronica Tonetti, spoke again.

"Oh, that's right. How are you going to explain the engagement to Sophia?" she asked.

Papa was briefly stunned. "Engagement?" he repeated.

"The Caruso family will only accept the official successor of the Romano family as their daughter-in-law. Isabella is the successor now. It only makes sense for Lorenzo to marry her instead."

My hand froze on the doorknob. My heart felt like it was being crushed by an invisible hand.

I remembered telling myself that at the very least, my fiance, Lorenzo Caruso, would believe me when I was stripped of my title as the successor of the Romano family.

Lorenzo and I had grown up together. He personally slipped the engagement ring onto my finger before sinking to his knees in front of the elders of the Romano and Caruso families, declaring that I was the only woman he would ever marry.

Papa remained silent for a long time. Guilt flickered across his face for a split second before he said, "No. Sophia and Lorenzo have been engaged for years. We can't change the engagement just like that."

My eyes stung. Although Papa had just admitted that he had personally participated in the orchestration of my downfall, I still shamefully felt a spark of hope in my heart. Perhaps he still cared about me.

Then Isabella chimed in, her voice trembling, "Actually, there's something that I've been wanting to tell you, Papa. But I was too scared to bring it up. Lorenzo and I are already together."

Papa shot to his feet and exclaimed, "What did you say? He's Sophia's fiance! How dare the two of you do something like this behind her back?"

Isabella's sobbing intensified.

"Our feelings for each other are genuine. If Sophia didn't pressure Lorenzo to enter an engagement with her with the excuse that she's the successor of the Romano family, the two of us would have announced our relationship a long time ago.

"Sophia has everything, but I only have Lorenzo. Are you going to deny me my right to love someone just because I'm not your flesh and blood?"

The sounds of Isabella's muffled sobbing resounded from the room.

Veronica pulled her into her arms, looking utterly devastated, and said, "Don't cry. It's all my fault. I couldn't give you a noble background. Sophia is the Principessa while the two of us are only freeloaders living under their roof. Who would deny her her heart's desire?"

I bit my lip hard, suppressing the urge to slam the door open to question them.

When did I ever pressure Lorenzo to marry me? He was the one who wanted to get engaged. He was also the one who kneeled in the chapel for the entire night when Papa wanted to marry me to another family.

He claimed that he would rather give up on his status as the successor of the Caruso family than lose me as his bride.

However, Isabella was accusing me of forcing Lorenzo to marry me at that moment.

Papa's anger slowly melted away. A heartbroken expression appeared on his face as he said, "If that's the case, Sophia's the one who crossed the line. She knew that you lost your Padre since you were a child, but she still insists on fighting you for everything."

Black spots exploded in my vision. I gripped the doorknob to keep myself upright.

Papa pulled out his phone. "Tell Lorenzo to come over. We'll settle this issue today."

I stumbled into the next room, wanting to listen in on their conversation.

I wanted to know how the man who once promised to protect me for my entire life would describe me behind my back.

It didn't take long before the sounds of hurried footsteps resounded from the hallway.

Lorenzo pushed open the door. He was still wearing the silver cufflinks that I gave him on my 16th birthday.

I didn't understand. Why would he wear them if he didn't love me?

Lorenzo swatted Isabella away, his face twisted in disgust. "I would never have touched you if you weren't drugged. Only a despicable person would use such lowly tricks to tie down a man."The last spark of Isabella's hope was snuffed out.Lorenzo slowly approached me. He reached out and tried to hold my hand, but I stepped back before he could touch me. "Mi dispiace, Sophia," he said. "I had no idea that Isabella had been lying to me the entire time. I never would have treated you that way if I knew."I looked at him calmly. In the past, I would be plagued with worry for a long time if Lorenzo so much as frowned. However, as he stood before me at that moment, he felt like a complete stranger."Your actions won't be erased just because you were lied to, Lorenzo," I said.Lorenzo shook his head wildly. "I'll make it up to you. Let's restore our engagement. I'll use the rest of my life to prove that—""No need," I said, interrupting him. "I don't want you anymore."…That ni

"I didn't know that Veronica actually tampered with the brakes," Papa said in a shaky voice. "I just thought that she was jealous of Chiara. I had just secured my position as the Don. I couldn't afford to let outsiders find out that there was a scandal between me and my lovers."Grandpa shot a cold look at him. "You decided not to investigate your wife's death all for the sake of your position?"Papa suddenly let out a roar before he lunged at Veronica and clamped his fingers around her neck."You ruined my family!" he screamed. "I'm going to kill you!"Veronica frantically thrashed around.Isabella shrieked before she grabbed a gun from one of the family members. Her entire body was trembling as she gripped it tightly and shouted, "Get your hands off Mamma! I'll kill you if you get any closer!"Papa stared at her with a stunned expression. The daughter he had spoiled rotten for so many years had aimed a gun at him. He suddenly burst into laughter, but he sounded absolutely miser

The screen in the hall lit up again.A recording of what happened at the club played on the screen. In the video, Isabella was wearing a cap and mask as she personally handed a stack of cash to the Associates of the Casano family."Escape from the back door once Lorenzo arrives," she said. "Don't forget to leave Sophia's private code behind. We must make him believe that she's the one who wants to ruin me."Her voice echoed clearly from the recording, burrowing into everyone's ears.Isabella was trembling as she instinctively took a step back. However, the members of the Bellini family blocked her path.Lorenzo stared unblinkingly at the screen. "No… This can't be real…" he muttered. The young man opened another document that showed Isabella's transaction records, proving that she wired money to the thugs. There was also a statement from one of the Associates. The Associate confessed that they were just following her orders to put on a show.Isabella drugged herself beforehand

The front doors swung open once again. The Romano family's Consigliere and lawyers strode into the hall, keeping their eyes on the floor."What are you doing here?" Papa snapped, glaring at them.No one answered him. A few of them nodded respectfully at Grandpa before turning to me and greeting me."Principessa."Their united voices echoed around the hall. One of the lawyers opened a black folder and said, "Ms. Chiara Bellini left a set of written documents behind before she passed away with the intent of managing her own assets after her death. Ms. Sophia would automatically become her number one beneficiary upon her 18th birthday—"Papa furiously interrupted him, exclaiming, "That's impossible! I took charge of Carmine Logistics with my own hands!""You only have the authority to manage it," the lawyer explained calmly. The Romano family's Consigliere stepped forward and said, "We were willing to follow your orders because Ms. Chiara and the Bellini family vouched for you, D

The Bellini family's doctor swiftly approached me and tended to my wounds. The bastards who forced me to my knees earlier didn't dare to look at me.Meanwhile, Isabella rushed to Papa's side in a panic and pulled him up."That's impossible!" she screamed. "Chiara was supposed to be nothing more than a wretch who was abandoned by her family. If she truly was the heiress of the Bellini family, why didn't anyone look for Sophia for so many years? Why didn't anyone step in when we were harassing her—"She hastily slapped her hand over her mouth before she finished her sentence.I couldn't help but laugh as I looked at her pale face."Why did you stop talking?" I asked. "You're wondering why the Bellini family didn't take revenge against you and your Madre after you harassed Mamma and me for so many years, am I right?"Isabella shook her head wildly. "I didn't mean that."Papa crawled back up to his feet before he began scolding me. "Watch your tone, Sophia. Isabella is your sister.

A deathly silence descended upon the hall.A silver-haired old man dressed in a tailored black suit slowly entered the hall, gripping a black cane.He hadn't said a single word, but his intimidating air made everyone hold their breath. An elderly Consigliere of the Caruso family was the first to recognize Grandpa. His voice was shaking when he exclaimed, "Don Bellini! He's the Don of Siraluna's Bellini family, Vittorio Bellini!"Gasps echoed across the hall. The Made Man who had been exacting "justice" on me hurriedly lowered his head.Papa quickly adjusted his tie and fixed an amicable smile on his face before he approached Grandpa."I've heard much about you, Don Bellini," he said. "I'm Marco Romano. I didn't know that you were coming to New Vormino. I would have personally picked you up at the airport if I had known."Paola also pushed Lorenzo to the front, saying, "This is my son, Lorenzo, the successor of the Caruso family. The Caruso family is happy to assist you in any w
