Chapter 3

Author: Lunar Reverie
Without the Chalice of Calm and after losing two of my soul fragments, my senses began to deteriorate in earnest.

By the fourth day, I had started to suffer severe bouts of hearing loss. Sounds became distorted and indistinct, sometimes seeming impossibly close and sometimes unbearably far away.

I could do nothing but stay on the floor. I had no idea where I was, nor could I feel my way around the room. No one had replaced my walking stick.

Someone opened the door to my quarters. I could no longer identify people by their footsteps. All I could do was guess from their scent.

I caught the familiar smell of Emile's ambergris and Giselle's powdery perfume.

"I made some herbal soup for you, Undine," Emile called from somewhere across the room. I had to concentrate just to catch every word.

He crouched beside me and slipped one hand behind my head while balancing a bowl in the other.

"Why are you on the floor, Undine? It's cold and dusty down here!" he said, his voice tight with genuine pity and concern.

I could always tell when he was sincere and when he was merely going through the motions. We had been together for six years, after all. Unfortunately, his sincerity would not save me from what was coming.

"Your Highness, what's the bracelet she's wearing? It looks so beautiful!" Giselle asked in her meek, vulnerable voice from nearby.

I immediately clamped my hand around my left wrist. I knew exactly what she meant.

The Quintessence Bracelet was a priceless mythical artifact passed down from every High Priestess before me. It had been forged from the cremated ashes of the 98 High Priestesses who came before me, and it was bound directly to my soul. It was the last thing keeping my soul from shattering completely.

"Your Highness, my injury starts hurting every night. The physician said it's because of the trauma. If I see even the slightest trace of blood on our wedding day, I may die," Giselle said coyly.

Her true meaning was impossible to miss.

Emile fell silent for a moment before reaching for my wrist.

"Undine," he began in a low, persuasive voice. "Please lend Giselle your bracelet for a few days to help her overcome her trauma. We can't risk any accidents before the wedding, understand? I promise I'll return it to you as soon as it's over."

I shrank away, tightening my grip around my wrist.

"No! If you take this from me…" My voice broke. "I'll die, Emile. I'll die."

He hesitated. I could sense his patience beginning to wear thin. His breathing grew heavier.

"Undine, you have to stop being stubborn. You used to tell me Soulforging would kill you, but look at you now. You're still alive and well," he said gently.

"I know you think this is unfair, but you should know better than to threaten me with your death. That's unbecoming of a future queen.

"Once the wedding is over, I'll personally lead an expedition to the frigid north and find the legendary Eternate. I'm sure it will protect and heal you even better than this bracelet can. So for now, just behave."

He gently began to slide the bracelet from my wrist, as though he feared hurting me.

It did not matter how gentle he was. He was killing me all the same.

"I promise you, all right? I'll bring you a piece of the legendary Eternate from the north after the wedding. So listen to me and let go of your bracelet."

The moment the bracelet slipped from my wrist, I felt something inside me break apart. It was as though every bone in my body cracked and splintered at once.

Agony erupted from my wrist and surged through every part of me. Blood seeped from the corner of my mouth.

Emile must have noticed because I heard his breath catch. Yet all he did was wipe the blood from my lips with his silk handkerchief. Then he wrapped an arm around my waist, drew me against his chest, and lifted the bowl to my lips.

"Drink this. It will help you recover," he said. "I've planned this wedding for over six years, ever since I decided you would be my bride. I want to hold your hand and stand beside you while all the nobles and knights shower us with their cheers and blessings."

I gritted my teeth and refused to open my mouth.

He responded by gently massaging my lips with his thumb until my teeth parted enough for him to pour the soup into my mouth. "There. Be a good girl. I won't let anything happen to you."

After making sure I had finished every drop, Emile eased away with quiet satisfaction. "I need to introduce Giselle to a few more nobles. It's just a routine part of the wedding preparations. I'll be back soon. Rest easy."

His footsteps faded, followed by the dull thud of the door closing.

I lay motionless on the floor, my limbs limp and powerless. Warm liquid streamed from my ears.

I could no longer hear anything. The world had fallen into absolute silence.

Emile opened his mouth to call Undine's name, but a whip cracked across his back before he could speak. The blow was powerful enough to send him hurtling through the air. His spine slammed against a rock beside the fence with a sickening crack. The attendant who had struck him did not even spare him a glance as he muttered, "Filthy lunatics. Get away from us!"Emile lay in the mud, his mouth filled with dirt and icy water. He watched the carriage roll farther and farther away until it finally disappeared at the end of the street. He remembered the things he had said before."Stop threatening me with your death! You're the High Priestess of Aubin!""Don't tell me about death and all that. It's depressing. I detest it.""Don't make that face. None of these things are anything special. I could get you far better treasures from the treasury, or the finest herbs from the garden."He remembered wrapping her cold, trembling hands in his while a handmaiden carried away the Chalice of C

He raised the items cradled in his arms toward me: a bloodstained letter, a stick snapped in half, and a handful of shattered beads. His hands trembled uncontrollably."Let's go home, Undine," he croaked. Joy, grief, and ecstasy tangled in his broken voice. "I have my life back because I have you back! You're back... You're alive..."I studied the strange, bloodied old man before me. I could not remember who he was. His face, his voice, and even his name stirred nothing within me. He was an unimportant stranger. Nothing more.He reached for the hem of my robe, but I stepped aside. My priestly attendant immediately kicked him back into the snow.He quickly scrambled to his feet, then looked up at me from the ground. Blood streaked his face, now marred by tears. His lips moved as he recited something. It was the last letter I had written to him. With each line, his voice broke a little more. By the end, the words had dissolved into a pitiful whimper."I see," I replied with such ca

Divine power flowed into the magic circle.I watched the purple aura Emile emitted, the so-called "innate spirit of a sovereign," strip away layer by layer before rushing out of the building and into the Temple of Aubin.A gaping hole suddenly tore open in his chest. It was the wound from the arrow strike, the very one I had removed through Soulforging. Now it had returned, festering as blood poured freely from the opening. The pain forced him to writhe, and he accidentally slammed his head against the bloodstained floor. Even so, he refused to pull his hands away from the center of the circle.Someone kicked the door open. The king and his men rushed inside, followed closely by a group of stunned court mages."What in the blazes are you doing?!" the king thundered as he watched the purple aura dissipate. "Y-You're sacrificing your spirit for this?! Are you mad?!"Emile did not even turn to face his father. He remained kneeling in the pool of blood he had created, his hands char

Emile dragged Giselle into a secret room in my quarters while I watched coldly from behind him. There were no torture devices inside, only a chair and a single gaslight.Giselle was forced to sit on the floor. Blood still clung to the corner of her lips as she trembled in fear. Emile settled into the chair opposite her with effortless elegance."One thing bothers me, Giselle. Did you know she would die if she performed Soulforging for the third time?" he asked softly. She froze. He caught the reaction and answered it with a dangerous smirk. "You don't need to answer so quickly. Allow me to remind you what happened."The day before you demanded that I lend you Undine's Quintessence Bracelet, the Hierarch sent his apprentice to deliver medicine for her. Your handmaiden stopped him in his tracks."He told her that the High Priestess' soul had been reduced to only three fragments by that point. If she were separated from the bracelet, she would die."Your handmaiden received the mes

I thought everything would end once I died. I was wrong. My spirit remained. It floated in midair and watched the man kneeling before a pile of exquisite fabric.Emile's brocade robe was already caked with dust. Silvery fragments of my soul still danced through the air. He waved his hands frantically, trying to catch them. The only thing he managed to grasp was the paper bearing my will. He read the bloodstained words, his eyelashes trembling."I want the physician, now!"I had never heard him bellow like that. His voice broke. It was as though the last thread of his restraint had finally snapped. He gripped the paper so tightly that it crumpled in his fist as his chest heaved violently."Bring every medic and physician from the Royal Hospital here at once. If none of you can bring her back... all of you will become her burial goods!" he growled, his voice low, ragged, and broken. The threat sent a chill through the room. The poor physician shook visibly. "B-But Y-Your Highness

I could hear neither the wind nor my own heartbeat. In that silence, the third fragment of my soul shattered. I felt as though I had already lost my life and been abandoned in my empty, silent quarters.…It was now the seventh day. I knew because I had counted my heartbeats to measure the passing days.Today was the day of my death... and my supposed wedding. My body had already become half-transparent. I touched my hand and felt the edges of my fingers beginning to blur. They were losing their solidity. My breathing had grown so shallow that even I wondered whether I had stopped breathing altogether. The door swung open.I could not hear a thing, yet I somehow sensed his presence and recognized his scent. I smelled ambergris, musk, and every perfume he never usually wore. I knew he must have been dressed in his wedding attire. He cupped my face in his hands. They felt almost searing against my skin. I could feel his fingers trembling. He must have noticed my half-transparent
