Chapter 9-- Dangerous Curiosity

I tried to stop thinking about what happened in the room behind the iron door yesterday.

But the more I try to stop myself from thinking about it, the more my brain goes back to it.

I wish I could confront Damien about what I saw and make him explain it to, but he's not around.

As usual.

I'm beginning to wonder if he's avoiding me or if he is actually busy.

He's definitely avoiding me.

I had tried the forbidden iron door, thinking maybe I could find the answers to my questions behind it.

But it was locked. Which is no surprise.

Damien must've known I'll try to get back in there. Which I'm impressed by his quick thinking.

The one place I think holds the answers to my questions is none other than,

The library.

I head over to the library determined to find answers.

The library is quiet and empty, which gives me all the time I need to rummage through the books.

After several minutes of looking for the old books section, I search through the old books until I find an ancient book with what I've come to believe is the Ashcroft crest embossed on it's cover.

I take book with me over to the library table and sit down.

I open the first page of book and see the same symbol on the cover with the words written underneath,

Power Demands Sacrifice.

I stare at the three words feeling them etched in my skull.

‘Power Demands Sacrifice’. I say them out loud, wanting to feel the taste of words on my tongue.

I flip through the pages of the book. Inside is a map of the estate. But there's something strange about it.

The mansion is marked clearly.

The stables.

The gardens.

The servants quarters.

The surrounding forest is marked too.

But deep inside the forest is a symbol that doesn't appear anywhere else.

A black circle surrounded by three claw-like marks.

Underneath it is written in cursive,

“The hollow”

I raise a questioning brow.

Why would the Ashcrofts have a place hidden inside the forest?. I think to myself.

I continue flipping through the book but find nothing that talks about ‘the hollow’ or answers my questions.

I scan the map one last time.

Maybe this “hollow” place could have the answers to my question. I have to check it out.

I walk out of the library and head towards the forest.

The position of the sun in the sky tells me it's late afternoon. I have to be quick, I don't want to break anymore of the rules.

The forest is quiet. Too quiet for my liking. I walk deeper until I find the location from the map.

There's an old structure hidden beneath the trees. I smile to myself for finding it easily.

Before I can enter, I hear a voice behind me.

‘You shouldn't have come here’.

I turn, expecting to see Damien or a servant.

A stranger is standing between the trees.

Not Damien.

Also not a servant by the looks of his clothes.

He approachs me.

‘Who are you?’. I ask taking a step backwards, trying to run.

But he's fast. Too fast for a human.

He grabs my wrist.

Then I notice his eyes.

They're red.

Vampire. He's a vampire.

‘Do you have any idea how much you are worth?’. He asks, a sadistic smile on his lips.

That's when I realize.

He's isn't interested in killing me.

He's interested in something else.

Someone wants me to be brought to them alive.

Cassian's POVIt had been too long since I'd been to the Voss mansion.Long enough that I almost forgot how much I liked the place.Or maybe it was the people.Or maybe it was someone.I pulled my coat tighter around myself as I walked toward the enormous estate, my mind running through everything I wanted to say to Eveline.I had rehearsed this conversation more times than I cared to admit.I would tell her how I felt. How I felt in a long time.I would tell her that avoiding each other wasn't going to solve anything.I would tell her that whatever happened between us in the mansion didn't change the way I felt about her or that I was using her in anyway.Simple.At least, that was how it sounded in my head.In reality, my stomach had been twisting since I left the Ashcroft mansion.I stopped in front of the doors and took a deep breath. For someone who had faced enemies, threats, and vampires who wanted him dead, I found it ridiculous that one woman could make me this nervous.I kno

Elara's POVThe first thing I felt when I woke up was warmth. Not the warmth of the morning sunlight filtering through the curtains.Something warmer.Stronger.Something wrapped tightly around me.Or should I say someone.I blinked my eyes open slowly.A strong arm was wrapped around my waist, holding me against a familiar chest.Damien.For a moment, I simply lay there. Then memories from last night came rushing back.My confession. His confession. Our kisses. The kisses he trails down my neck. The way everything between us had finally changed.A smile slowly spread across my lips.We were finally here.We were finally on the same page. After everything. After all the confusion, the secrets and the fear of saying what we truly felt...Damien and I had finally chosen each other. We were bonded together.Body and soul.I felt his lips brush against my neck.I melt into him.Another soft kiss followed. Then another.A quiet giggle escaped me.'You're awake.'His voice was low and sleep

  • Between thirst and love    Chapter 58-- Intimacy

Damien's pov. What in heavens name is wrong with me?.I sigh annoyed with myself yet again. Why didn't I tell her I love her too?. More than she'll ever know. Why didn't I kiss her worries and doubts away and tell her she's the best thing that's ever happened to me.Instead I looked away not answering her.I made her think I didn't feel the same way or that she was forcing this on me.I have no one to blame but myself. How am I supposed to tell her everything I know?.How am I supposed to look her in the eye and tell her I've been in love with her ever since I saw her at a ball seven years ago.How am I supposed to tell her I haven't stopped thinking about her since I laid eyes on her.If only she remembered. Why didn't she remember?.That was one of the few things I had hoped for when I'd married her. When we stood on the altar together. That she would remember me.But she didn't.I wish I could say the only was just a contract marriage to benefit both families.Just a sickening con

  • Between thirst and love    Chapter 57-- 'I Love You'

Elara's pov.Moments Before The Crash.I had my breakfast in the gardens today. It reminded me of the first time I had arrived in mansion.Alone. Frightening.Clueless.I didn't want to feel those things anymore. Not that I did anyways. I just wanted to be alone. To think.I hadn't seen anyone when I got downstairs and I didn't question it.Eveline went back to the Voss mansion, after the ball saying she still had matters to attend to.I think she is still avoiding Cassian. She's made it abundantly clear she won't tell me what happened between them no matter how many times I pout my lips or plead with my eyes. She just won't tell me. It makes me wonder if whatever happened was that bad?.Damien and Cassian were absent which is no surprise. I hadn't seen them also when I came downstairs. There were probably somewhere in house talking about ‘business’.My goes back to the ball last night. To Steven's expression when I told him about what I had found in my mother's diary.More specific

Damien's pov.I've sat in my study, in the same position for the past hour staring into space.I haven't' gone down for breakfast, for some annoyingly disturbing reason I'm not hungry.Which isn't surprising at all.Even the fresh supply of blood being delivered today doesn't entice me now.Not after what I found out yesterday.Or more precisely, what I heard. And I know I'd have to eat if I don't want to lose control. The last thing I want is to lose control. But my mind keeps racing, keeps replaying the words Steven had said to me at the ball last night.‘I heard your mother is in town’.I keep telling myself that he was wrong.I keep telling myself Steven was just looking for a way to get under my skin. But knowing how Steven operates, I know for the first time in his life he was saying the truth whiles trying to get under my skin. Why is she here?.After all those years?Centuries. What was she doing back here after turning her back on us?.After disappearing with a trace. What sh

Damien offers me his hand and I gladly take it.He leads me towards the dance floor. Everyone crowding our way stepped aside so we could pass through.Even the people who were already dancing left the dance floor until it was just me and Damien standing on the dance floor. And everyone stood around us.Watching.The sound of the music changed to a slow gentle tune.I placed my left hand on his shoulder while our right hands were raised slightly, interlaced with each other. His left hand found my waist and I let out a shaky breath as goosebumps flooded my arm.Damien's response to my reaction was a small teasing smirk.I glared at him.He knows what he does to me.And he even enjoys it.His hand on my waist felt so comfortable, as if that was where it belonged. Then, we were off dancing. At first, I was focused entirely on keeping up with his movements. One step. Then another.I didn't want to step on his feet by accident.Damien guided me effortlessly across the floor, his movements s
