Chapter 2

Author: Javan Zest
Joel rolled his eyes and said, "You make it sound like living with us is some kind of hardship. You weren't born a spoiled rich kid, but you sure act like one.

"And now you're using this to get attention?"

Megan's expression darkened. She asked, "Why are you throwing a tantrum?"

I replied quietly, "I'm not throwing a fit. I just think staying at school will be more convenient for my studies."

But the frown on Megan's face didn't disappear.

"Do you think I don't know you? You could have moved out anytime, but you chose now instead. Aren't you just upset with me because of the cake?"

Then, she added, "That's enough. If you really want a cake, I'll have Lena make one for you later."

After that, she ignored me.

As she wiped the cream from the corner of Joel's mouth, she laughed. "How are you still like a little kid? You can't even eat cake without getting it all over your face."

"I'm Mom and Dad's baby forever. You got a problem with that?" Joel retorted.

"Fine, fine. You're their forever baby," Megan replied fondly.

I couldn't stay there any longer, so I quietly went upstairs.

After applying to live at school, I stood in my carefully decorated room, lost in thought.

There were the expensive, beautifully made superhero pillows on the bed. By the window stood a pot of rare orchids.

Also, there was the elegant bookshelf I could reach without stretching and the small night light on my bedside table.

Everything was something Megan had carefully chosen for me when I first came to live with the Slades.

She even had the layout changed to match my old room because she was afraid I wouldn't feel comfortable here.

Megan said, "This is our home from now on. We were poor before, and I couldn't even afford to get you a proper bookshelf.

"Now that we have money, I want to give you the best. I won't let you suffer anymore."

I was so happy back then.

We had moved into a big house we never even dared dream of owning.

We didn't have to worry about bills and living costs every day. And we didn't have to fear the roof leaking whenever it rained, or waking up to find the whole house flooded.

Megan didn't have to work nonstop just to scrape together money for my tuition anymore.

I thought things were finally getting better.

But I never imagined I would have to lose her in exchange for all of it.

A knock suddenly came from the door.

When I opened it, a beautifully wrapped cake box appeared in front of me.

Megan peeked out from behind it.

"Colin, happy birthday!"

Seeing my eyes still red-rimmed, a hint of guilt flashed in hers.

"I'm sorry. I only just remembered that today is your birthday," she said.

For a moment, I thought I saw the sister who used to have eyes only for me.

I held the cake in my arms. For a moment, it felt like I had something to hold onto again.

I followed closely behind Megan into the room.

My resolve began to waver.

But that small bit of hope shattered the moment I opened the box and saw it covered in mangoes.

My lips trembled as I said, "Megan, did you forget? I'm allergic to mangoes."

Megan's brows immediately furrowed.

For a long time afterward, I couldn't forget the way she looked at me at that moment.

It was the look someone gives when they see something that's become a nuisance.

There was a sickening squelch, and a warm drop of blood splashed onto my face.Joel's eyes went wide as he screamed, "No! I wasn't trying to stab you. You could've gotten out of the way! Why did you jump in front of me?"The bakery staff rushed outside and called the police.Joel tried to run, but the employees pinned him down. The whole scene descended into chaos.Megan didn't even look at him.Maybe the look of terror on my face got to her. She ignored the blood pouring from her arm and used her uninjured hand to wipe the blood off my face. She kept trying to comfort me."Colin, don't be scared. I'm okay. It doesn't really hurt."Seeing the blank look on my face, she quickly tried to explain."I didn't forget my promise. I'm not here to get in your way," she said. "I just didn't want you to get hurt."I thought I had already kept him in Heston. I let my guard down. This is all my fault."During that time, the Slades had sent people to look for her, and Joel insisted on co

Megan held my hand tightly, her words coming out in a rush."No, that's not true. That's not it, Colin. How can you say that? We were always family."I listened calmly.I waited until she finished and her panic slowly faded. Then I spoke."If you really see me as family, then leave me alone. You've already ruined my life once. So I'm begging you. Please don't ruin it a second time."The color drained from Megan's face. She stood there in silence for a long time, as if all the strength had left her. Finally, she quietly said, "Okay."-For a long time after that, Megan never appeared in front of me again.Sometimes, when I left school during breaks, I would notice a luxury car parked in a corner near the school gate. But the moment I looked at it, it would drive away."Colin, I know what we should eat! One of our classmates posted about a new diner nearby. Let's go there," a classmate suddenly said. The passing thought in my head disappeared before it could fully form.I t

A major story spread across Heston this month. At Megan Slade's wedding, someone whispered something to her. Right in front of her family and all the guests, she abandoned the groom and ran away. The whole thing caused a huge stir in Heston.Meanwhile, I was thousands of miles away and knew nothing about it.After the SAT, I moved to a new city by myself with nothing but a suitcase.Using the money I had worked so hard to save, I enrolled in a private school to repeat my senior year. The private school had a strict boarding system, and students had to turn their phones in.I spent every day at school, stuck in the same routine of eating, sleeping, and studying. So I had no idea what was happening outside.A month later, I finally got my phone back. The moment I turned it on, countless missed calls from different unknown numbers flooded the screen. One glance at the location displayed on the call screen was enough for me to guess it was probably Megan calling me from different

Joel was startled by the icy glare Megan gave him.For a moment, it felt like he was back to the day she first came back to the Slade family. Back when Megan only cared about me.Joel stared at her, his eyes turning red-rimmed."What's the meaning of this?" he asked. "It's not like I've never taken Colin's things or worn his pajamas before. You never had a problem with it."Now that he's gone, you're suddenly regretting everything? Why?"Why? He had worked so hard to slowly win Megan over. But all it took was me leaving home to make her panic. Everything he had done before was falling apart."Because he's my brother," Megan replied."But Mom and Dad said I'm your brother too!" Joel argued."No, you're not." Megan cut him off."I don't have a brother as cruel as you. Do you think I don't know why the whole thing with the needle got so out of hand?"You paid people to spread lies about Colin online."Seeing the icy expression on her face, Joel suddenly laughed."You're right

Megan's expression was frighteningly dark. She stood in the airport terminal, dialing my number repeatedly. But no matter how many times she tried, all she got was a busy signal. She exited the call screen and angrily typed a message. "What the hell did you mean by that message? Answer your phone!"The moment she sent it, she saw that it had failed to send.Megan's eyes widened in disbelief.Joel stood beside her with his suitcase, looking ready for a vacation in Harborton. When he saw the screen on her phone, he scoffed."He's really putting on a show now. Is he throwing a tantrum just to make you go comfort him?" he said. "Why don't we go have fun in Harborton first and leave him alone? "Once he realizes he has no school to attend and suffers a little, he'll come crawling back to us."With that, Joel casually grabbed Megan and tried to pull her onto the plane. But the moment he touched her, she violently shook him off.For some reason, an uneasy feeling crept up on her.

  • Beyond You   Chapter 4

A woman I had never met before rushed at me like she had lost her mind. She punched, kicked, and yanked my hair."You put a needle in my son's pencil case and cut his hand!" the woman screeched. "The SAT are just two days away. "If we hadn't brought him in time and the injury hadn't been minor, you would've ruined his whole life!"You're only 18 years old. How can you be so cruel?"I pulled away from her in confusion and said, "I didn't do it! I don't even know your son.""Colin, stop lying. I saw you put the needle in his pencil case!" Joel suddenly stepped out from behind her. He was pointing at me with complete confidence. My expression hardened. "Why would I put a needle in his pencil case? You have no proof. What gives you the right to accuse me?""Who says we don't have proof?"The moment I heard Megan's voice, a chill ran down my spine. She held up her phone and played a video.Because of the camera angle, it looked like I sneaked up to a classmate's desk and slipped
