Chapter 2

Author: Eternity
The next morning, I returned to the Moretti estate to pack.

Three years of my life filled only two suitcases.

I had just wrapped Nora’s photograph when the door opened. Bianca entered with my mother, followed by my father, Uncle Enzo, and several relatives.

They gathered around my luggage as if they already knew how this performance would end.

“She’s really packing,” Uncle Enzo said.

Bianca smiled. “Let her finish. She’s waiting for someone to stop her.”

A few relatives laughed.

I opened the bottom drawer of my desk. Inside lay a dust-covered petition to amend my birth record and change my name.

When I first returned, I had practiced writing Claire Moretti until my hand cramped.

My mother had sat beside me and held my hand.

“Once your father and I complete the public acknowledgment, we’ll file everything together.”

I had been too happy to sleep that night.

Then Bianca cried.

“Why is Claire in such a hurry? First she wants the name. What will she ask for next?”

My father refused to sign.

“Wait until we know you didn’t come back for our money.”

Legally, I could have filed the petition without them. But I had never wanted a collection of letters on a document.

I wanted my parents to claim me openly.

Three years later, the only signature on the petition was mine.

I placed it on the desk.

My mother stiffened. “Why are you taking that out?”

“It’s no longer needed.”

Beside it were my applications to enter the family office and be formally recognized in the family’s records.

None had ever been approved.

My surname was still Vale. My name appeared in no family documents. Even my estate access card identified me as a guest.

My mother had always said a piece of paper could not decide whether I was her daughter.

But whenever she had been asked to put my name on one, she had refused.

I tore the applications in half.

My mother stepped toward me.

Bianca caught her arm. “She wants you to stop her. If you do, she’ll know this worked.”

My mother looked at Bianca.

Then she lowered her hand.

That small movement hurt more than I expected.

I placed my estate access card, credit card, employee badge, and every piece of jewelry my mother had given me beside the torn papers.

Nothing belonging to the Moretti family would leave with me.

Footsteps approached outside. The family attorney entered carrying a briefcase.

My father frowned. “Who called you?”

“I did.”

The attorney opened the briefcase and laid three documents on the desk.

The room fell silent.

“What game are you playing now?” my father asked.

“It isn’t a game. You said you could not accept me until you knew I wasn’t here for Moretti money. Sign these, and you will never have to wonder again.”

The first document withdrew me from the Moretti family trust.

The second revoked my requests for public acknowledgment and entry into the family office.

The third waived every future claim I might have against my parents’ estates.

Bianca tightened her grip on my mother’s arm.

“She knows you won’t sign. That’s the point.”

I picked up the pen and signed all three pages.

Claire Vale.

Then I pushed them toward my father.

“Your turn.”

He stared at my signature, waiting for me to lose my nerve.

I did not.

Finally, he signed.

My mother stood motionless over the final document. The same hand that had once guided mine as I practiced writing Claire Moretti now hovered over the line that would ensure I never became one.

She looked at me.

Then she signed.

The attorney notarized the documents.

“They are effective immediately. Miss Vale is no longer a beneficiary of the Moretti family trust and has waived all future inheritance and financial claims. Her requests for formal recognition and family-office membership are withdrawn.”

My mother’s face went white.

“Do you understand what you’ve surrendered?”

“Yes. The inheritance you thought I wanted and the name you never wanted me to have.”

I picked up my suitcases and Nora’s photograph.

“From now on, I am only Nora Vale’s daughter.”

My mother’s lips trembled.

“We are still your parents.”

“When I asked you to acknowledge me, you refused. I won’t ask again.”I met her eyes for the last time.

My father’s voice followed me to the door.

“If you walk out today, don’t imagine you can return when you regret it.”

I paused without turning around.

“The documents are already effective. I won’t regret them.”

Then I left the estate where I had lived for three years without ever being allowed to call it home.

My parents did not leave immediately. They rented a place near the base, and my father made an unconditional grant from Moretti Holdings to the program’s community recovery fund.I received him as one of the project leads. When he handed me the commitment letter, hope made his expression almost cautious.I verified the terms and issued the receipt.“Thank you to Moretti Holdings for supporting the recovery fund.”His hand froze between us. “I didn’t do this so you would thank me.”“What response did you expect? Should one grant make me call you Dad again?”He said nothing. My mother brought food to the base each day. On the first day, minestrone. On the second, lasagna. On the third, chicken soup in an insulated container. She sat in my office and insisted on watching me eat.I opened it and divided the soup among colleagues working late.“Do you hate me that much?” she demanded. “I spend hours cooking, and you won’t taste a single bite. Must you watch us suffer before you’re satisfied

Three months later, my parents found the Western Corridor project base.I was at a rail freight terminal checking fixed-asset valuations against an equipment handover list. Wind snapped the pages until a colleague held down one corner.“The carrier confirmed. The last equipment transfer will be completed tonight.”Someone behind me said my name.My mother stood several yards away, her eyes swollen. My father followed in a black suit dusted with sand, carrying a thick stack of documents. They seemed surprised by what they saw. I had not begged them to take me home, nor had the West reduced me to ruin. I was thinner and darker from the sun. A cut across the back of my hand had already scabbed over.“Who are they?” my colleague asked. After a pause, I said, “Mr. and Mrs. Moretti.”My mother went white. She hurried forward and seized my hand.“Don’t call me that. I’m Mom.”I withdrew gently. “What else should I call you? I was absent from the family-office register, the public acknowledgme

That night, my father ordered the security team and the consigliere to reopen the hospital investigation. Most records from twenty years earlier were incomplete, but they found a retired nurse who remembered my adoptive father.“His wife had just given birth and was in poor condition,” she said. “But he kept wandering near the nursery. Around midnight, he asked which room held the Moretti baby.”My father’s voice tightened. “Why didn’t that alarm you?”“He said he was your driver and that you had asked him to check the child’s security. He wore a Moretti uniform and knew the names of the mother and the guards. How could I have imagined he meant to exchange two infants?”The next day, the team located a former freight partner. Afraid that the driver might one day silence him, the man had preserved a recording. My adoptive father’s drunken voice filled the room.“Moretti thought he was too good for me. Let him raise my daughter. His daughter is in my hands, and the life she gets depends

The next morning, my father went to the Moretti Foundation.“Bring me every project Claire handled.”No one moved.Bianca frowned. “She resigned. Why are you investigating her now? You don’t really believe two melodramatic emails, do you?”He did not look at her. “Bring me the files.”Her expression stiffened. “Those were my projects. Claire ran errands and organized paperwork.”The project director lowered his head. My father noticed.“You have something to say?”After a long hesitation, the man answered. “Mr. Moretti, Miss Vale conducted field reviews in twenty-seven communities. The six projects that received last year’s Philanthropic Alliance awards were based on her research, budgets, and compliance reports.”My father turned sharply. “Then why was Bianca’s name on the awards?”The director remained silent.Bianca scoffed. “She organized a few files. That doesn’t make them her projects. I set the strategy and contacted the partner organizations. Without me, she would never have en

It was afternoon when I landed. Sunlight blazed off the pavement, and fine sand stung my face. A project vehicle waited outside. The colleague who met me took my luggage and offered me a bottle of water.“You look exhausted. Bad flight?”“Not too bad. I’m just not used to being this far from Greyhaven.”“You will be.” He opened the car door. “Conditions aren’t elegant, and the local rules are complicated, but the team is straightforward. If you need something, say so. Don’t carry everything alone.”I held the water without speaking. I had waited three years for that ordinary kindness at the Moretti estate. A stranger gave it to me within minutes of my arrival. Not long after we left the airport, an unknown number called. Expecting the closing attorney, I answered. My father’s voice came through at once.“Claire, this has gone far enough.”No greeting. No question about whether I had landed safely. In his mind, crossing thousands of miles was merely another tactic.“What do you need, si

My father stared at the signature on the agreement.Claire Vale. The daughter he had kept away from Moretti Holdings had been chosen to help lead a project trusted by powerful institutions.Bianca laughed first. “Convincing performance.”She reached for the file, but my father held it down.“Dad, you don’t actually believe this? She arranged for the project to send the documents to Moretti Holdings because she wanted us to know exactly where she was going.”“People who truly intend to leave don’t make such a spectacle,” Uncle Enzo agreed. My father’s expression eased slightly. “When does her flight land?”“In approximately two hours,” the assistant said.My mother called. A recorded voice informed her that the number was no longer in service. She tried again with the same result.“She changed a number,” Bianca said. “That is hardly a reason to panic. She wants you to search for her.”On WhatsApp, my profile picture was gone and my mother’s message remained beside a single gray check. H
