Chapter 4

Author: Sunnys
I felt like I'd come down with a terrible fever.

The instant Julian said those words, my chest seized, airless.

My throat swelled, raw and bitter.

"Vivian, here's my promise to you. No matter how far things go with Chloe, you'll always be my only wife. That part never changes."

"All right?"

There was even a thread of tenderness in his voice.

But I felt like I'd just heard the most absurd thing in the world, too stunned to speak.

He really did love Chloe. He really couldn't bear to leave her.

He wanted both of us, me and Chloe.

God. How could a man this shameless exist?

It took me a long moment to surface. I opened my mouth clumsily.

"What are you even saying, Julian."

"Don't you think this is insane? Completely ridiculous?"

Julian smiled and patted my shoulder, utterly unbothered.

"Go home and think it over."

"I'm staying here with Chloe tonight."

Then he went back into the room.

He sat down at the edge of her bed and took her hand, his eyes full of worry and tenderness.

Something struck my heart, once, then again.

He used to be exactly like this with me.

The second year of our marriage, I got sick.

Unconscious, I had him gripping my hand, crying, begging me not to leave him.

He set down all his work and watched over me day and night.

The day I was discharged, Julian had wasted away to half himself.

For the life of me, I couldn't understand how the Julian who'd loved me like that could turn around and love my sister.

The next morning, Julian came out of the room carrying Chloe.

He saw me sitting on the bench in the hallway and asked, "Vivian, did you sit here all night?"

I couldn't find a trace of concern in his voice. Only the startled fear of a man worried I'd cling and refuse to let go.

My throat tightened all at once.

Then I pushed down the unease inside me, shook my head, and held out a few documents to him.

"The hospital needs a family member to sign these. Chloe's admission forms."

Seeing how calm I was, Julian assumed I'd come around.

He smiled, relieved, freed up one hand, clumsily flipped through the forms, and scrawled his name in crooked strokes.

Then he picked Chloe back up and strode off.

I followed behind them, my heart as still as dead water.

What Julian didn't know was that, along with those hospital forms, he'd just signed a set of divorce papers.

I was slow. I was a fool. But I still had my pride.

I couldn't accept a Julian who split his heart in two, and I couldn't accept a marriage with that kind of poison in it.

I wanted the divorce. I wanted to vanish from his life completely.

After Julian took Chloe home, he didn't show up again.

I packed a few things, and before I left for good, I knocked on the door of Chloe's place.

I wanted to see how the two of them were together. Was it like the way we used to be?

Julian answered the door in matching his-and-hers loungewear.

Chloe was behind him, hanging off him affectionately, draped over him.

"Vivian, what are you doing here?"

His face fell, as if my showing up was the most inconvenient thing in the world.

"I'm staying here for now so I can look after Chloe. Once the pregnancy's stable, I'll come back and make it up to you."

I'd already made up my mind to go, and still, seeing this in front of me, I stood rooted there, gutless, as if the ground had dropped out from under me.

I made myself smile.

"You don't have to make up to me anymore."

"I'm leaving."

Julian blinked, baffled.

"Leaving? Leaving for where?"

Then, just as quickly, the impatience set in. "Vivian, you're a grown woman. Could you stop acting out over every little thing?"

"Quit it. Be good now."

I parted my lips, but before I could get a word out, Chloe called from inside, "Julian, you promised we'd make a candlelit dinner together. Hurry up."

Julian turned at once and slid an arm around her waist.

Then he lifted his hand and shut the door, closing me out.

I smiled, and in that instant everything came clear.

I turned around too.

Julian. We won't be meeting again.

She wanted to see me. To curse at me again, the way she had last time?I was slow. But I could grow too. After a long moment, I spoke again."Never mind."I said softly, "I'm not her sister anymore.""I don't want to see her. Let her do as she likes."After I hung up, a weight lifted off me.No one mentioned Julian to me again, as if the man had never existed.I practically lived in the lab. My students took to calling me, fondly, the mad scientist.Another month went by, and the prison officer brought me a diary. She said Chloe had demanded it. That if I wasn't allowed to read it, she'd kill herself.I nodded, tucked the diary into a storage box, and had no intention of opening it.Until one night, ten days on, when I couldn't sleep. For no reason at all, I thought of that diary. It turned out Chloe had never, from childhood, truly thought of me as her sister. She'd hated me all along, envied me all along. After I started dating Julian, she kept hearing from me about how good he was t

The last shred of hope in Julian's heart went out.He said softly, "I thought, if Vivian could just accept the compensation I offered, maybe I'd feel a little better. But she won't even take that.""Keeping me at arm's length like this, she's making sure I never have an easy day for the rest of my life."Chloe asked to meet me at that coffee shop we used to love most. Her voice was raw as she apologized, like she'd been crying a long time.I sat with it for a while, and in the end I softened and agreed. She was still my sister, after all.And she'd paid a heavy price. The next day, the weather was bright and clear.I'd just reached the door of the little shop when a car came barreling straight at me.In the chaos, I saw the person behind the wheel. It was Chloe. She glared at me, eyes wild with hatred."Vivian! It's all because of you!""Because of you, Dad never loved me as a child. Because of you, my teachers and classmates never liked me!""Because of you, even Julian wants to throw

I turned and started up the stairs."Vivian!"Julian's voice came from behind me.The next second, Ethan's fist landed in his face.Julian stumbled back several steps before he managed to steady himself."My apologies, Mr. Sterling.""I have to keep my client safe."That night, back in my room, when I went to draw the curtains, I saw Julian still standing dumbly under the streetlight, head tilted up, looking toward my window.I pulled the curtains shut. I didn't want to spare him another glance. In the middle of the night, a heavy rain came down.Julian sat out in it the whole night. The next morning when I went downstairs, I heard a crowd of people gathered around him, murmuring."Professor Quinn!"Someone stopped me."This guy looks really familiar, isn't he your ex-husband? He's running a fever. He's passed out now."On the way to the hospital, Julian called my name in his daze."Vivian... Vivian. I'm sorry."I watched the tears spill from his eyes like a string of beads snapping lo

Half a year apart, and for a moment I almost didn't recognize Julian. He'd wasted away to a shadow, stubble rough on his jaw, his cheekbones jutting sharp.I frowned, looked down, and only then realized my hand was still locked tight in his.My stomach lurched. I pulled my hand hard out of his and said quietly, "I'm doing fine. You don't need to worry about me."Then Ethan, who'd brought me home, stepped in front of me.He moved up and put himself between us.The truth was, even though we were divorced, even though I'd let this love go for good, the instant I saw Julian again I tensed up for no reason I could name.I didn't know why he'd suddenly come looking for me.I'd divorced him and handed him over to Chloe. Shouldn't he be thrilled? It had been six months. Chloe must be close to having the baby by now.Not that any of it had anything to do with me anymore."Mr. Sterling, I'm Ms. Quinn's lawyer.""You and Ms. Quinn are legally divorced. "Julian! Sterling!"Chloe's eyes flushed red in an instant, and fat tears rolled down."Do you even hear yourself?! You bastard!"She lunged at him with her fists, only for Julian to catch her wrists."Yes, I'm a bastard. But what does that make you?""If you hadn't dressed yourself up like that and crawled into my bed while I was drunk, you think I'd spare you a single glance?""You were nothing but a way to kill the emptiness. You thought a pregnancy could trap me? Dream on! Who even knows whose bastard you're carrying!"Chloe broke entirely. She thrashed and screamed, "You're the one who said you'd love me forever, you're the one who said my sister was boring and cold, you're the one who pulled me back into bed again and again!
