MIRATo my surprise, Mason cleans me thoroughly with a bath cloth, then gives me a refreshing, full bath in the bathtub, before leaving the room without a word.Thelma comes in a moment later to announce I will be having breakfast downstairs this morning.I must say, I'm shocked. Mason had a change of mind? Oh well, I do not particularly care, so long as I do not get to eat all by myself up here.I hurriedly dress up, afraid to keep everyone waiting. I plan to do a little light exploring today, so I wear very short shorts and a mid riff exposing crop top.My choice of clothes is partly to tempt Mason, more than it is for exploration. My subconscious tells me that I'm playing with fire, but I have never been known to shy away from flames. I rush downstairs. Voices filter into the hall as I descend the slightly curved, grand stairs. Male voices. I take one look at my shorts and immediately have a rethink. If Mason has guests, I do not think it would be wise to trigger him by appearing
MIRAThe silence in the room is almost deafening. Mason hasn't moved an inch from his position since the strange encounter with Devon. His back is still to me. His body visibly vibrates with anger, or tension…or both.Never one to keep silent for too long, I heave a breath. Here goes."First, I find out you have a nephew. Then I find out you have a brother. Are there any other family members out there?"His fingers clench into fists, and my heart begins a dull thud against my chest."Shut the fuck up, Mira." He growls.I clamp my mouth shut immediately. Best not to aggravate him. I'm already in a shitload of trouble. After what feels like an eternity and Mason still remains in place, I begin to get restless…and antsy."I know I've fucked up, big time." I begin slowly. " What's my punishment going to be?"In a flash, Mason appears in front of me. He grabs both my arms so tight, I wince, then proceeds to shake me until my teeth rattle."What exactly do you not understand by shut up, wom
MIRAMason's words hit me with the force of a tow truck. Suddenly, I feel cold. I wrap my arms tight around myself, trying to fight the numbing cold that settles deep in my bones. How the hell did water get on the stairs anyways? Who was responsible for it? Why would Mason blame me?Anyone could be responsible. Thelma, the guards, Devon…anyone. But this can only mean one thing. It is either the water was an accident, or a perfectly orchestrated plan. And my mind is dangerously tilting towards the later option. The room where Dorchester is being attended to isn't sound proof, so I can hear his pained cries as the doctor tries to work on him. My heart twists and turns in my chest. Poor baby.Mason's fiery, enraged eyes flashes through my subconscious. Oh, Lord, please let the little boy be okay. Mason isn't ready to listen to anything I say. I can only imagine what he would to me if Dutch's situation gets worse. When my poor heart can no longer stand Dutch's whimpering, I suddenly feel
MASON"What do you mean by she disappeared?" I grip the edges of my desk as I shoot Agent Morris a glare, trying to contain the rage that burns in my veins. He lowers his head, looking ashamed for the first time since I have ever known him."I left her in the gardens earlier to restructure the CCTV footages. When I came back, she was gone."I feel lethal, venomous anger try to crawl its way up my throat, so I sit back down in my chair, using my table as a cage. If I act out now, I could regret it later."You had one job." I begin, my voice portraying a calmness I do not feel, "one fucking job. You were supposed to shadow a god-damned female for chrissakes. And you failed."Agent Morris quickly adds," I have my men scouting the savannah for her, sir. She will be found in no time. I assure you."In a flash, and a blind burst of rage, I lift the heavy, ceramic penholder on my table and fling it in his direction. His fast reflexes save him. The penholder shatters on the wall, and falls
MASONMy driver speeds down the savannah like there's fire on his trail. In a few moments, the gates of the mansion come into view.Mira hasn't said anything else, but her shivers have gotten violent. The rain pours with a vengeance now. Everything is drab and gray, just like my mood.I look down to find her delicate face squeezed in a grimace, her teeth chattering, and my heart suffers a blow.I have definitely gone too far this time. Fuck! The gates open on their own, and the car finally skids to a stop. Agent Morris steps down quickly, running over to hold an umbrella over our heads. We are led into the mansion and I make quick work for the rooms."Call the doctor." I order sharply. "He should be here in the next five minutes, or he'll lose his god-damned job."" On it, sir" Agent Morris says, already whipping out his phone.Mira holds on to me monkey style, both her legs wrapped tightly around my waist, seeking my warmth. Without thinking, I lean down and kiss the top of her head.
MIRAI jolt awake, slightly disoriented. I heard something. The room is pitch black and silent. The drapes are pulled closed, blocking any form of light from coming in."No…no, leave me."I freeze. There it is again. I feel around for Mason. Sure enough, he's right beside me. The sounds of his gentle breathing fill the room, instantly soothing my jangled nerves."No! I want mummy!"Dutch!Eyes wide, I look around, searching for the source of the sound. A few short paces away, something glows in the dark.I pull the sheets away with shaky fingers and get to my feet. Stunned, I realise that I am completely naked. I grab a robe from a chair in the corner and hastily stab my hands through the sleeves, padding in the direction of the glow."No, please!" His voice sounds so broken, so guttural, it tugs at my already weary heartstrings. The glow turns out to be Mason's phone. Some sort of monitor recording shows Dutch, trashing atop his little bed. I pick the device up, trying to understa
FIFTY THREE – MASON"Hello, brother."I hold the phone so tight, it almost cracks as Devon's voice comes through the speakers. I shut my eyes, trying to regulate my distorted breathing."Devon. What do you want?""Tsk. Tsk. So rude. This isn't how one speaks to his brother."I lean against my office table, anger simmering in my veins." I do not have time for this, Devon. What the fuck do you want?"I left a warm and naked Mira in bed barely two hours after we had fallen asleep because the office phone wouldn't stop ringing. My patience has been stretched to its limits."Did you enjoy my surprise?" His voice is cold now, revealing the real, evil Devon who hides behind the expensive façade."What are you talking about?" I ask through gritted teeth. He laughs. It sounds like the warning bells of death."Since you've decided to play dumb, I'll give you a hint." A pause. " Did the little boy break a leg?"For a moment, everything goes still. Then I see red. I pace round the length of my o
MIRAWe finally touch down on the roof top of a gleaming skyscraper in the heart of the city. I look out my window at the breathtaking view of the Hawaiian strip, momentarily forgetting my fear of heights.Mason hasn't spoken to me since my uncoordinated confession a few minutes ago. Now, he walks over and unbuckles my seatbelt, his eyes still radiating cold.I stare at his profile, willing him to look at me. When he still doesn't, I feel the stirrings of frustration and annoyance in my veins."I didn't hurt Dutch."He pauses, finally looking at me. His stormy grays pin me in place, and I almost lose my confidence. Almost."It wasn't right for you to blame me because I would never do something like that."Mason eases to his feet, grabbing my hand and taking me with him. "We will have this conversation in the house, Mira. Not out here."His tone is gruff and serious, so I wisely clamp my mouth shut and let him lead the way off the plane. We pass through a hole in the roof, down a fli
