27. The Monster

“You’ll be fine, Beatrice.”

Beatrice took a deep breath and sat on her bed. She had only been away from them for a few weeks, but it felt like an eternity. She was fortunate that her stepmother hadn't yet interfered with her room. She overheard her stepmother's plan to turn it into a gym for Clementine. She gently touched her cheeks, still slightly stinging. It wasn't the first time Veronica had done that because of Clementine's complaints. Usually, she just let it go and accepted it. But today, she felt different. Maybe it was because of Mateo's sudden arrival. She suddenly felt sorry for herself.

She stood up when the door suddenly opened. Beatrice furrowed her brow when she saw Mateo.

“Are you done?” Beatrice asked. It hadn't even been half an hour since she entered the room, but he came in. She stepped back when Mateo didn't respond and continued to approach her.
