“You know he isn’t coming back, should I just refrigerate the food?”

I held back a scornful scoff as I watched the maid walk towards the dining table to pack up the food I had spent my entire day preparing for my husband.

I couldn’t even stop her from touching the food because she was right. Lucas wasn’t coming back home. I thought he would make an exception since it was our third wedding anniversary.

But I was wrong.

Lucas didn’t care about me.

To him, our marriage was just for convenience. He only got married to me because his family forced him. I also had no choice but to marry a man I knew nothing about.

Lucas had made it clear to me that he wasn’t in love with me and would never be. But I was delusional enough to think he would change his mind as the years passed by.

It had been three years but nothing had changed.

Even though we shared a room on the nights he saw fit to sleep at home, it still felt like we were strangers under the same roof.

He only made love to me whenever he felt like it. He always used protection because he didn’t want me to have his baby.

My life practically fell apart the minute after we said our wedding vows to each other. He took everything away from me - all my dreams and ambitions in life.

I wanted to have kids. I wanted to start medical school. But no, Lucas turned me into a housewife who barely had any social life.

Most girls out there were dying to be in my position. I mean, who wouldn’t want to be with one of the finest men in New York? But they had no idea what I was going through behind closed doors.

We appeared as a perfect couple to the world.

I always accompanied him to all his work events and put on a fake smile. Everyone thought I was lucky to be with him. They thought I had it all. But I knew what I had to go through every day.

My eyes wandered back to the wooden wall clock in the living room. It was only a few minutes before the day was over.

I had been waiting for my husband since 8:00pm and it was almost midnight. The maid had already refrigerated the food and returned to her room.

I was holding on to a little hope that he would come back before midnight. I mean, he was nice enough to have dinner with me the previous years.

But this time around, he had more important places to be than to be with his wife on his anniversary.

I wasn’t surprised because I saw it coming a long time ago.

Shit, my best friend even warned me about it.

But I couldn’t do anything about it.

Letting out a frustrated sigh, I stood up from the couch and walked back to my room. As I lay on the bed, I was tempted to pick up my phone and check the news.

But I let out a scoff and closed my eyes.

I was already hurt and didn’t need to make my situation worse. I just decided to sleep and forget about my problems.

Maybe Lucas would have a reasonable explanation for why he didn’t come back home for our anniversary dinner in the morning.

A strong stench of alcohol filled the air and my eyes were forced to flutter open. I strained my eyes to adjust to the bright light coming through the window.

I was so exhausted the previous night that it slipped my mind to close the curtains. Letting out a deep breath, I looked at Lucas who was standing in front of the closet.

He turned around and looked at me but he didn’t even acknowledge my presence.

I swallowed hard and cleared my throat. One of us had to say something. “You didn’t come home yesterday. I made us dinner to celebrate our anniversary.”

Lucas scoffed, running his fingers around his scattered brunette hair. “Oh my goodness, Layla.” He paused for a second, then he continued. “We haven’t had dinner together for the past month, what made you think yesterday would be different?”

My heart sank as I tried to speak. “Emm, our… it’s… anniversary.” I was too hurt to even come up with a coherent sentence.

“Please, I’m too tired for this. I just want to sleep.” He continued as he took off his white shirt. “Can you leave the room? I need to be alone.”

It was a normal thing for Lucas to dismiss me whenever he felt like it. Even though we shared the room. Most times, I would sleep in the guest room or an empty room.

I always wondered why he didn’t just ask me to leave permanently. Sometimes, I wondered what was going through his mind.

“Lucas, you can’t just dismiss me whenever you like. I’m talking about our anniversary here.” I sat upright, staring at him. “I made us dinner and you spent the night drinking alcohol with whoever.”

“Happy anniversary, Layla!” He responded sarcastically. “Are you happy now? Please leave the room. I’m too tired for this.” He reminded me again.

I pushed the sheets away from my body and climbed out of the bed. “The maid helped me refrigerate the food, should I reheat it, so we can have breakfast together?”

Lucas laughed. “What is wrong you you?” He asked, shaking his head. “You know what? I can’t do this anymore.”

He turned around and walked to the closet. He rummaged through the closet searching for something. I stood in my spot as I waited for him to be done.

I had no idea what he was searching for and was curious to find out.

After a few moments, he turned around with a brown envelope and handed it over to me. “Take.” He tossed it on my body when I was hesitant to take it.

My heart was pounding in my chest. “Lucas, what is this?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.

Why was he giving me a brown envelope? What was inside? I hope it wasn’t what I was thinking.

Chapter 111 Lucas Brown ~•~ Becky’s sister actually wanted to drag me to court. After she realized she didn’t have a solid case, she resorted to asking for a settlement. She asked for a million dollars. I didn’t understand her pain, but if a million dollars would make her feel better, I didn’t mind wasting it on her. At least, she would get off my back. I stopped by my parents’ house after l was done with my lawyer. I hadn’t seen them in a while, and with everything that was going on, they requested to see me. “Lucas, come here.” My mother pulled me into a warm hug as soon as I stepped foot into the living room. “I missed you so much.” My lips curled into a soft smile. “I missed you too, ma’am.” “How are you holding up?” Her expression turned sympathetic as she broke the hug. “Do you need to go for therapy?” I couldn’t hold back my laughter even if I tried. “No, I don’t need therapy,” I said as we settled down on the couch. “Where is Dad?” I asked, my eyes

Chapter 110 Layla Patel ~•~ Lucas had to take care of some stuff concerning Becky’s passing, so he wasn’t present for lunch with Olivia. A part of me was relieved because I knew that they weren’t exactly fond of each other. And I wasn’t in the mood to mediate tension. Still, I hoped one day we would all be able to sit together and just be civil. But that was a task for another day. Lunch lasted for about two hours. The kids engaged in conversation with me and Olivia. It was fun and I enjoyed catching up on our lives - even if most of my part was sad. I managed to smile - not because it didn’t hurt, but because I felt proud of myself for surviving them. It made me stronger. And I was happy that phase of my life was over. Now I was surrounded by people who genuinely loved and cared about me. Life felt a little bit lighter and I couldn’t stop smiling. Soon enough, the girls got bored with us and retreated to their room. After they left, I finally got t

Chapter 109 Layla Patel ~•~ My lips curled into a proud smile as I watched everyone sit around the table, eating dinner. For a moment, everything seemed perfect. The girls were happy to be in New York. I was also happy to be there. It felt like a veil of sadness had been lifted from my life. There was peace. “Are you guys enjoying your food?” Lucas and the girls nodded collectively. “Mama is the best cook ever.” Akira bragged, turning to Lucas. Lucas chuckled. “I know, I’ve been missing a lot.” “I’m so happy that we are all here now.” Lily chimed in on the conversation, grinning from ear to ear. I felt the same way too. After dinner, the kids went upstairs to their room, while I stayed back to clear the table and wash the dishes. “You know you don’t have to do all these by yourself, right?” Lucas asked as he followed me into the kitchen. I laughed. “I know, but I just want to do it.” “You’re so humble.” I nodded. “I guess I am.” Sho

Trigger warning: This chapter depicts suicidal themes and may be triggering for some readers. Reader discretion advised. Chapter 108 Lucas Brown ~•~ “You killed my sister! You fucking killed my sister because you didn’t want her to give birth to your child!” Becky’s sister’s voice sounded far away even though she was standing in front of me. I couldn’t bring myself to process what was happening. I just stood there, shocked. “Wait to hear from our lawyer. You will lose a lot of money after I take you to court.” She continued to threaten me as she cried. I didn’t kill Becky. She committed suicide. Becky killed herself by overdosing on drugs. I don’t know why she did it. But I didn’t ask her to do it. Why was her sister blaming me? Even if I didn’t want to have anything to do with her, I didn’t wish death on her. Becky had been my assistant for years, and I cared about her as a person. Seeing her lifeless body made my blood freeze. But I felt g

Chapter 107 Layla Patel ~•~ In the middle of our conversation, Lucas received a phone call that left him shocked. “What’s going on?” I asked, my eyebrows etched in confusion. He exhaled sharply. “I don’t know yet. I have to go.” Without another word, he turned around and left me standing alone. I couldn’t help but wonder who was on the other end of the phone or what they had said to him. After he left, I walked back to my room and shut the door. I would get an explanation when he returned home. I just hoped that it wasn’t something bad that had happened. I picked up my phone and called Olivia. “Hey, it’s me again.” I chuckled lightly as she answered the call. “What’s going on?” Olivia asked with a hint of curiosity in her voice. “Something just happened,” I replied, sitting down on the bed. “Would you judge me if I told you that I have feelings for Lucas?” There was a brief silence. For a moment, I thought Olivia had abruptly ended the call because s

Chapter 106 Lucas Brown ~•~ Becky seemed terrified. “I didn’t know you would show up. By the time I called my sister to stop her, she was already at your house.” She offered a lame apology. My fists curled into a ball. I had to take multiple deep breaths to calm myself down. Before I could say anything else, Jamie stepped in. “You’ve been nothing but ungrateful. You should be lucky we didn’t sue you for trapping my brother with a baby. I don’t even like you but I’ve been here for you throughout your pregnancy but it’s not enough.” Becky whimpered, her voice shaky. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean….” Jamie cut her off before she could complete her sentence. “I don’t know what your intentions were but best believe, we will file for custody after you give birth and you will be out of our lives for good.” I stayed quiet as Jamie continued speaking. Someone actually needed to put Becky in her place. I had been giving her grace because I felt she was just lashing
