The house was too quiet. The kind of silence that wasn’t peace, but pressure. The kids had been dropped off at Rita’s for the afternoon, and I should have used the empty hours to focus on the files sprawled across my dining table.

The ones with Rose’s name scrawled and underlined in red, the clippings, the receipts, the little scraps of “proof” I’d been collecting like a detective losing her mind.

But I hadn’t been reading. I’d just been staring.

My eyes kept returning to a single word written on the corner of one page: Jack. The name felt like it burned even from ink. It had taken me weeks to even write it down, to admit what my gut already knew.

And now that it was there, I couldn’t look away.

The knock at the door startled me so hard that my pen rolled off the table and hit the floor.

I froze, breath caught in my throat. For a half-second I thought it was him. But when I looked through the frosted glass, the silhouette was broader, the posture less predatory.

Familiar.

Riley.

I didn’t see it coming. One minute, the kids were laughing in the next room, the faint sounds of a cartoon echoing like a buffer against the silence pressing in between Ashton and me. And then, out of nowhere, he pulled a folder from his jacket pocket and set it down on the table between us. The sight of it punched the air out of me. My throat tightened. Even before I touched it, I knew what it was. I’d know those ivory covers anywhere. The divorce papers. The same ones that had ripped my world apart six years ago.My fingers trembled against the edge of the folder. Heat flooded my cheeks, my pulse racing as memories rushed in. Bloodshot eyes, nights spent crying on the bathroom floor, three babies screaming at once while I remembered the papers that severed me from the life I thought I once knew. The betrayal. The humiliation. The certainty that Ashton had cast me aside like I was nothing. My chair scraped hard against the floor as I shoved back, nearly knocking it over. “Yo

The head waiter appeared to know a secret I didn't. His courteous smile altered slightly when he grasped my arm and guided me into the candlelit exclusive room that was reserved in Riley's name, so Helen would not be suspicious immediately. The triplets were chattering excitedly behind me, speaking too loudly to one another. Jake had his mischievous look in his eye that I know signals trouble is brewing, and Blake kept prodding Kate and asking, "Do you think she's going to cry?"I put my finger on my lip and got in close so they could listen to me. "Shh. Stop jumping up and down, men. Your mother comes in here and finds you jumping, she's gonna think something is terribly wrong. We must make this seem as though, uh, what's the word?""Relax," Kate answered quietly, smiling. "Like we weren't ready for two weeks."I chuckled. “Exactly.”Candles swayed in the gentle light. There were two chairs in the center at the dining table, and a tiny table in a corner for the kids to sit as a group

The news hit me like a blade, sharp and merciless.“Ashton Hale Invests in Helen Gray’s New Film.”The headline glared from my phone screen, the glossy press photo showing him stiff and polished beside Riley, that smug little producer. And Helen, oh Helen, caught mid-smile, glowing in a way I hadn’t seen in years. It wasn’t fair.I had spent years building Ashton’s world around me, curating the appearances, orchestrating the scandals, feeding just enough gossip to keep myself shining while keeping others dim. I was the center, I wasn't just the woman at his side. And now? He had poured money, serious money, into her. I dropped the phone onto the marble counter with a clatter and reached for my wineglass. The stem trembled in my fingers, and I hated myself for it. Rose Yael didn’t tremble. She didn’t get rattled either. She controlled the game. But right now, the headlines were controlling me.Helen wasn’t just surviving. She was thriving.“Ashton… you fool,” I whispered into my g

I wasn’t prepared for the sight that met me when I walked into Ashton’s office the next morning. The space was polished, professional, all glass and steel, as usual. A place where serious decisions about money and power were made. But what hit me first wasn’t the glint of sunlight on the windows, or Ashton behind his desk. It was the sound of laughter — shrill, joyful, unmistakably childish.Specifically my children’s laughter.Jake, Blake, and Kate.Sitting right there on Ashton’s plush leather chairs, as though they belonged. And beside them was Rita. Smiling brightly, like this, was the most natural thing in the world.“Ashton, look!” Kate exclaimed, holding up a drawing, crayons scattered across the polished coffee table. “It’s us. Our family!”She scampered across the office, her small sneakers squeaking on the marble, and thrust the paper into Ashton’s hands.I froze at the door, my pulse hammering.Rita. My children. Ashton. And none of them even realized how out of place th

I preferred to quietly work. The business took place without anyone's knowledge, over late night telephone calls, and papers circulated but weren't signed yet. It was less difficult to maintain control with nobody present. But lately, everything in my life seemed too conspicuous. Jack was sauntering through my life like he didn't care. Investors were in doubt. And Rose was delivering bad news politely.Worst of all was Helen. She had done nothing wrong, but the paparazzi harassed her for news articles. All her errors, all the speculation about her, and all the rumors hurt me, my career, and my reputation. But I couldn't help thinking about a plain truth: if Helen got up once more, if she regained strength, then the attacks on her character by Rose would not be so effective. Rose's entire tale relied on demonstrating Helen as weak, needy, and insignificant. If this changed, then Rose would have less to weaponize against her. That is why I made the call.Riley replied immediately, yes

It started with a call that felt quite heavy in my heart in the morning. I had just prepared the children to go to school. Their lunchboxes were packed and their shoelaces were securely tied. The phone rang next. It was a call from the principal of the children's school, and it made me anxious. School calls never seemed to bring good news."Mrs. Riggs," said the principal softly but firmly. "Can you come in today, please? It involves your triplets….. Jake, Kate, and Blake."I observed my face turn pale. "Is everything all right?""They're fine," he replied hastily. "But, there was. another issue. It would be better if we spoke in person. Please, as soon as possible."Another day. Those words remained in my head, hurtful and difficult to forget, as I put on my coat and picked up my keys. The triplets had explained that Henry had been bullying them earlier — telling cruel things about how his father had more money and how they lacked a father. Every time, I attempted to reassure the
