Chapter Four: Scholarship (2)

Jane widened her eyes in disbelieve.

"No, that's can't be. Why??? Who would do that ? Because of what?"

The last word came as a whisper, while she slumped back gently on the bed.

"Grandma, this is too much. Why this?! So, you mean there is nothing for us right us? No savings?"

Mama liya nodded her head at her granddaughter's questions, and they both sighed.

" I will try and borrow money from my friends tomorrow, cause right now it already late. I guess we will have to sleep with an empty tommy." Jane voiced out sadly.

At 11 pm, Jane was still up. Not able to sleep. She was thinking about how things just turned out for them, no good food to eat daily, no good wears, and no one to aid them.

Everyone just scorned them both and look at them with eyes full of disgust.

She sighed heavily asking her self, why is life so unfair to her and her grandma. They hardly ate three meals in a day, not to talk of no dinner this time at all.

Sometimes, when she thinks about their situation, she just badly wanted to give up and let life tune them anyhow. But whenever she looks at her grandma hazel brown eyes, a new hope always surged in her. She looked back and stared at Mama Liya's sleeping figure.

Meanwhile, all Jane's thinking and sighing didn't go unnotice by Mama liya, but she still pretended to be at sleep.

Soon, Jane laid on the bed, exhausted with all her thoughts coupled with hunger and after some minutes, Mr. sleep came and took over.

~~~~~
Jane can be seen yawning continuously, her eyes were covered with dark circles.
"Jane, what's wrong? " Mart asked, coming closer to face her.
Viva and Mabel nodded. " Yeah, we want to know why you look scary!"
Jane looked up at her three besties and smiled, not reaching her eyes.
" Am fine, just a little bit exhausted. C'mon, I will pass. Now stop worrying. I will be fine."
"Hummm, you sure girl? "
"Yes, am sure. I will be and oh by the way, can I get some money from you guys? You can lend me any amount , I won't mind.
"You see.......yesterday, our goods got thrown away and there is nothing for us, so..........."
Mart exhaled in shock.
" Are you serious?! Who did that?"
" Is that the reason why you are like this?" Viva stared at Jane curiously.
"Em,,,,,,, " Scratching the back of her head, Jane stuttered and asked her self why Viva was too intelligent and smart.
" Seriously, you don't have to hide it anymore. It already obvious, but don't worry we won't judge you. Infact, by afternoon we will contribute some money and give you." Mabel sessed
Mira sat comfortably in her father's sitting room, Mr. Sal, who was also the village head.
" Father, I need your help. "
Mr. Sal looked up at her daughter acting cute and sighed. " What do you want now?"
He knew his daughter was a very cruel person, who doesn't give a shit and none of her actions are nice at all.
"Well, I just need you to help me use your power as the head of village to stop the school from giving my enemy any scholarship. Though, initially I want to include her friends in the punishment, but i don't want want that anymore, just Jane."
She beamed and replied her father.
Her father shook his head indicating a "No sign"
" But father, you promised you will do anything I want, or else I think you know what I can do." Mira smiled smugly.
Exhaling deeply. " Fine, but am telling you, you will regret bossing me around."
"No father, I won't."
She gave a come back immediately.
" But who is this person you called your enemy?"
Her father asked.
"Jane , the granddaughter of Mama liya." She replied without blinking an eye.
"And why her? She is not someone to cause trouble as I know."
Mira rolled her eyes at her father's words.
" Yeah, I know, but I just want it to be her.
" I don't like her. The sight of her irritates me to the gut, and I don't want to see her progressing at all."
Mr. Sal stared at her daughter with disbelieve. " It your wish anyway. Have it your way lady!"
The scholarship program main aim was to let the students in the village further their education in the big cities of Abuja, Ibadan, or Lagos ( populary called small London), including free accommodation and free school fees for four years.
Tomorrow will be the big day.
Jane has been so busy improving herself the more, including her friends. Now, she is confident in herself, though not hundred percent sure but at least eighty percent.
~~~~~~~

A night to the big day.

" Grandma, am so happy, cause if I can pass. Then, our life will turn better, maybe then I can locate some of our other families. Ohh, am so glad!" Jane smiled sweetly.

Mama liya smiled at her granddaughter's words. " Yeah, am happy for you too but don't get too over excited, it not good. Just keep it moderate okay my dear. "

"Ok ma, I will keep it down. I just can't help it. "

"My dear, don't worry all is well. I wish you nothing but success."

Her grandma prayed.

That night, Jane was too happy to let sleep take over her. She stared at the roof praying for the sun to rise faster.

She hoped to pass the exam and, when she does, her first plan was to look for a good job with a good pay, so as to save up for her grandma, cause the tumours are growing fast in her Grandma's blood.

It obvious, even though Mama liya didn't voice out or complain about anything. Also, the cities have good hospitals, that will be able to treat her grandma well.

The village doctor, Mr. Lowes, wasn't that competent.

He can only diagnosed with the modern medical equipment he brought from the city, and he is still under training, so he can't be trusted with the cancer case of Mama liya.

Jane also hoped to achieve her dream of becoming an entrepreneur, becoming the head of a big company, and having many subordinates.

Throwing commands, acting like a lady boss, and been respected.

She also wished to meet her other family members, if she is able to get to the city. Wanting to know why no one bothered to check on them or take pity on them.

"There must be a reason right? Not all people are cruel." Jane thought.

She always dreamed of a complete family with a simple life. She also wonders, if her parents were still alive, will she be in this condition with her grandmother??

Such a rethorical question!

"Somethings are just meant to be accepted, whether one like it or not."

Jane chuckled to herself but she sort of miss her parents, even if she didn't spend much time with them.

Jane turned over and stared blankly.

" Enough of the thinking Jane, you still need to pass the scholarship exam." She told herself, and soon she drifted off to sleep.
