CHAPTER FOUR: BLOOD AND STRANGERS.

Mara Marino sits at a corner table of a coffee shop in Williamsburg, and she looks exactly like what Giuliana's file described a twenty-eight-year-old woman with money she doesn't remember earning and no real idea how the world works beneath the surface. She's wearing a blazer that costs more than most people's weekly groceries, fingers moving across a MacBook keyboard with the confidence of someone who has never had to wonder whether her work will pay.

Alessandra sits at the counter and orders an espresso she doesn't want. She watches her sister in the mirror behind the machine.

Her father's second chance. The life that might have been if things had gone differently.

The door opens.

Tall with Italian features. Alessandra recognizes him immediately -- Carmine, one of Accardi's button men. The kind who does jobs other men don't want to touch. The kind who sleeps well at night because he's learned not to ask questions about the people he hurts.

Carmine doesn't order anything. He sits down two tables behind Mara and opens a newspaper he doesn't read. The message is clear: we're watching. We know where you are. We know everything. We are always going to know.

Alessandra sets down exactly what she owes cash, no tip, no trace -- and walks out without touching the cup.

Twenty minutes later she's on the phone. "I need Carmine picked up," she tells Francesca. Her voice is calm but there's something underneath it, cold and old and furious. "Quietly. And I need to know his orders before I make any move."

"You want him alive?"

"For now. I want to understand the full scope of what's coming before I start killing people."

"What about your sister?"

Alessandra's hands tighten on the steering wheel. "Make sure she stays safe. Without her knowing she's being protected. I want people watching her, but I want them invisible. I want her to feel like nothing has changed."

She ends the call and sits for a moment, letting the weight of what she's set in motion settle over her.

Inside the coffee shop, Mara is still typing. Completely unaware that the woman who ordered espresso at the counter was her sister. Completely unaware that death was sitting three tables away deciding whether to strike today or Saturday.

The city moves around Alessandra's car like blood through veins. Traffic flows. People walk. The world continues its indifferent rotation, oblivious to the violence simmering beneath it. This is the thing about power most people never see it. They walk through their days thinking their choices matter, thinking the universe cares about their individual paths.

They don't understand that there are women like Alessandra. Women who move in the shadows, who shape events from positions no one else can see.

She makes another call. "I want surveillance on Mara Marino. Twenty-four hours. Everywhere she goes, she meets everyone. Invisible."

"How long?"

"Until I say stop. And make sure your team understands -- if she gets so much as a scratch before Saturday, every single person responsible dies. Slowly."

"Understood."

She pours herself a drink back at the penthouse. It's only four in the afternoon, but time has become meaningless. There's only before Saturday and after Saturday now.

She thinks about Mara. About the life her sister has been living in complete ignorance -- a life built on lies, yes, but also a life lived without the weight of knowing. Sometimes ignorance really is bliss. Sometimes not knowing is a gift.

But Mara will know soon. And when she does, Alessandra needs to be there to catch her as her world falls apart.

Her phone buzzes. A message from a number she doesn't recognize: She visits the SoHo watch boutique every other Thursday. This Thursday is in four days. Sullivan has already been briefed.

Alessandra stares at the message. Then she goes to her window and looks out at the city she owns.

Four days.

The apartment is thirty-one floors above the street and cold in the particular way of high-rise buildings in March, when the heating system is cycling down for spring and the residual chill from February hasn't cleared the walls yet. Alessandra stands at the window for a long time, watching the lights of Brooklyn across the water, thinking about a girl who grew up believing her father was unknown and her mother was simply unlucky in love.

Mara has no idea what she is. Has no idea that her blood carries the weight of an empire, that the money in her bank account traces back to decisions made in warehouses exactly like the one where Giuliana Torelli stood and delivered information that changed everything. She has no idea that every birthday she's celebrated, every Christmas dinner at Elena's apartment, every ordinary Sunday morning in her Williamsburg life, was underwritten by a deal made over a dead man.

Alessandra should feel angry about that. She does, but it's a slow anger, the kind that doesn't need to announce itself because it's been burning for so long it's become as much a part of her as her father's eyes or her mother's silence.

She picks up her phone and looks at Mara's number again.

She needs to do this right. Not the way she does most things -- efficiently, clinically, with the minimum of emotion and the maximum of forward momentum. She needs to do this the way she would have wanted someone to do it for her, seventeen years ago, when she was standing in a warehouse on Fifth Street trying to understand a world that had just been rearranged without her consent.

She needs to do this like a sister.

She puts the phone down. Not yet. Not over the phone. This conversation happens face to face, in a room with exits Alessandra has already mapped, with her people in position and a plan ready for every possible reaction Mara might have -- including the ones Alessandra wouldn't blame her for.

She pours another drink and sits with the weight of what's coming.

Outside, the city moves through its indifferent evening.

  • Black Suit and Broken Oath   CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN: DOMINIC REALE

"Raymond," Nadia says. "Ames. Can I trust her?"The silence this time is different from Ames's silence. It is the silence of a man whose worst suspicion has just been confirmed rather than the silence of a man deciding what to do about a name he already knows. The distinction is small, and it is everything."Yes," he says. Without hesitation. "Ames is clean. But her office is not." A pause. "Reale has someone inside the Washington field office. Has had someone there for years. If Ames took your call on an internal line""He knew within minutes," Nadia says."Yes."She closes her eyes for one second, then opens them. "Can you reach Ames directly. Not through the office. Her personal cell.""I have it," Raymond says."Tell her, Inwood. Tell her to come alone and to use her personal vehicle and to tell nobody where she is going." Nadia pauses. "Tell her Dominic Reale. She'll understand.""I'll call her now," Raymond says. "Nadia." His voice drops slightly. "Be very careful. Reale is not

Three seconds. That is how long Nadia stands looking at the dead phone before she moves. Three seconds is long enough to run the possibilities and short enough that nobody in the black car outside has made a decision yet either. Three seconds is the difference between reactive and proactive, and Nadia has survived seven years in this work by understanding that difference in her body before her mind catches up.She turns."We need to move," she says. Her voice is low and entirely level. "Right now. Both of you."Elena is already standing. She has been standing since the car pulled up, Nadia realizes. She saw it before Nadia did. Seventeen years inside Ruiz's operation had calibrated her threat perception to something that operated below conscious thought.Alexandra looks up from the envelope. She reads Nadia's face and puts the envelope inside her coat in one motion and stands."How many?" Elena says."One car visible," Nadia says. "Assume more.""Back exit," Elena says. Not a question

  • Black Suit and Broken Oath   CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE: KEEP IT STILL

She watches it pull away and stands on the pavement for a moment in the morning light. Her phone was ringing; it was Ames again. The review board has been notified. She is to report to the Washington field office tomorrow morning at eight. Her badge and service weapon are to remain with her pending the outcome of the review. She is, for the moment, still an agent. She goes back inside.Alexandra is at the table. The map of midtown is still spread out in front of her, but she is not looking at it. She is looking at her hands, flat on the table, the way Francesco had looked at his hands in the coffee shop on Chambers Street, what feels like a lifetime ago and was actually yesterday evening.Marco is still on the couch. He looks young in a way he probably doesn't look most of the time. Like the last twenty-four hours have temporarily removed whatever surface adulthood puts on a person.Nadia sits across from Alexandra.Neither of them speaks for a while."He's been with me for seventeen

  • Black Suit and Broken Oath   CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR

Francesco already knows. That is the first thing Nadia understands when she steps fully into the room and looks at him.He is not checking exits, angles, or the distance between himself and the weapon on the table. He is standing with his hands at his sides. His shoulders settled, and his eyes were on Alexandra's face with the expression of a man who made a decision eight months ago and has been living inside the consequences of it ever since, and is now simply arriving at the last one.He looks tired in a way that has nothing to do with the wounded shoulder.Marco is very still on the couch. He has the look of someone who walked into a story already in progress and is only now understanding how long it has been running without him.Alexandra stands to Nadia's left. She has not moved since she said, " Your turn. She is watching Francesco with an expression that Nadia cannot fully read and does not try to; whatever is happening between these two people has seventeen years of architectu

  • Black Suit and Broken Oath   CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE: THE OATH

Alexandra does not move for a long time. She stands in the middle of the conference room on the forty-first floor, looking at the phone screen, at Francesco's face on it, and does not move or speak, and the stillness of her is not the stillness of someone calm. It is the stillness of someone who is holding something enormous inside themselves and has not yet decided what to do with it.Nadia keeps her weapon on Ruiz.Ruiz waits. He is good at waiting. That much is clear. He has the patience of a man who has spent decades playing games measured in years rather than minutes and he is content to let this moment breathe because he believes he controls the outcome of it.He is wrong about that."How long?" Alexandra asks. She is still looking at the screen.Ruiz understands the question. "Francesco came to me eight months ago. Not willingly. I had something he wanted to protect. A debt from before your time as head of this organization. Something your father knew about and chose to look pa

  • Black Suit and Broken Oath   CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO : USING THE ENEMY

The forty-first floor is so quiet unlike how it used to be. The elevator opens onto a passageway that smells like freshly printed money, this particular silence of places where important decisions are made and then buried. The carpet is thick and dark. The lighting is low. There are no windows in the room, only closed doors on both sides, each one numbered in small gold letters.Alexandra leads them, and Nadia follows.4113. 4114. 4115.They move without speaking. Their footsteps make no sound on the thick carpet. Nadia has her hand near the unregistered weapon and she is aware of every door they pass, every camera mounted at each end of the hallway, two visible, which means at least four, and the key card warm in Alexandra's hand.4116. 4117.Alexandra stops and listens and then puts one hand flat against the door the way you press your hand against a thing to feel whether it is dangerous before you open it.She uses the key card. The lock clicks softly. The door opens. The room is

Carmine doesn't talk easily, but he talks eventually. They all do, given the right amount of time and encouragement.By the third hour in the basement of a warehouse that doesn't appear on any official record, he's broken down to the point of apology."Accardi wants it to look like a robbery," Carm

  • Black Suit and Broken Oath   CHAPTER FIVE : THE CONFESSION.

Her mother is older than Alessandra remembers.Elena Marino sits in her penthouse living room with floor-to-ceiling windows, the kind of tasteful luxury that whispers money instead of shouting it. watching the sunset like it might disappear if she looks away. She doesn't turn around when Alessandra

The file sits on Alessandra's desk like a bomb waiting to go off. It's thick professional and expensive. The kind of document compiled by someone who knows how to dig into the spaces between official records and hidden truths. Photographs. Bank transfers. Legal documents signed by her mother -- Ele

  • Black Suit and Broken Oath   CHAPTER TWO: THE WOMAN IN THE SHADOWS.

The warehouse in Red Hook smells like rust and old rain. Alessandra has used it before for meetings with people who weren't quite enemies but weren't quite allies either. She's conducted interrogations here and made deals here. Ended lives here. She goes alone. Not because she's stupid. Alessandra
