Chapter 2

Author: Whispers in the Water
I couldn't understand why Skyler would do something like this to me. We had grown up together and naturally got together after graduation.

Skyler had always been supportive of my pursuit of art. During my years of art studies, he would accompany me as I honed my skills and encouraged me.

I genuinely thought my life would continue to be blissful—until Skyler brought Leah to the art studio one day.

Back then, I had appraised one of her paintings, which was of a peony. Leah's technique was nearly identical to mine, and she had even copied the number of leaves. However, I didn't call her out and instead allowed her to work in the studio.

The week before, I had accidentally glimpsed something on Skyler's phone. It turned out he and Leah had feelings for each other. He was even planning an art show for her.

Skyler was the person I loved and trusted most. Yet, in the end, he had changed.

I stared blankly as I sat on the hospital bed, still unwilling to accept my new reality. I still had a sliver of vision in my left eye, but this remaining sliver merely added to my misery.

Picking up a pencil, I attempted to sketch something. However, every stroke was just painfully difficult with my blurred vision. Just then, a familiar voice sounded from outside the door.

"Julia, are you okay? I heard you were hospitalized due to an injury."

I froze in shock, and the shaky hand I had been sketching with halted, too. The voice was unmistakably Leah's.

I jerked my head in the direction of the door. Despite my blurry vision, I could still make out that the person standing before me was Leah—but wasn't she supposed to be dead?

Skyler followed her into the room shortly after. My lips trembled as I stared at them both, but I couldn't utter a single word.

Leah burst into laughter at my shocked expression.

"Hahaha! Oh, Julia. Actually, my suicide note was just a little prank. Don't you know yesterday was April Fools' Day? Although, I didn't expect Skyler to get so worked up over it and even quarrel with you for my sake. I'm really sorry about that," she said.

A prank? Then, why on earth did she pin her death on me? Skyler spoke up from beside Leah, too.

"I'm sorry, Jules. What happened yesterday was just a misunderstanding. I didn't realize Leah was just messing around.

"I mean, who wouldn't have panicked when someone's life was involved? So, try not to take it too seriously, okay? And Leah, why do you have to be so mischievous!" he said.

The two of them laughed and joked about what had happened, but neither of them brought up my destroyed paintings nor my damaged eye… Unable to hold back my fury, I shot out of bed and charged at Leah.

"Do you think this is the kind of joke you can make lightly? Do you have any idea what you've done? My art show was ruined, and my life's work was destroyed because of you! I've even lost my eye!" I yelled.

Unexpectedly, Skyler swiftly shielded Leah from me. Frowning from displeasure, he then accused me of overreacting.

"We already said yesterday was April Fools'. It's a tradition to play pranks on that day, so why are you getting so worked up? Besides, your paintings were ugly anyway—so what if they've burned?

"You're a painter, aren't you? So just repaint them—what's the big deal?"

Skyler's words were like a knife to my heart. He was once the top admirer of my work. Yet now, not only had he personally destroyed them, but he also called them ugly.

Summoning the last of my strength, I pointed at the bandage over my right eye. I scathingly asked, "Repaint them? How am I supposed to do that?"

Skyler was stunned for a second.

Then, he scoffed and said, "Don't you have just another stye? I've told you so many times not to stare at your phone late into the night, but you never listen!

"So stop acting like it's something serious! Leah and I purposely came to check on you, and yet you throw your temper at us? How about you calm down and reflect on yourself?"

With that, he dragged Leah along with him and left without a second glance.

At that moment, my heart clenched so tightly that the resulting pain was intense. Since Skyler loved Leah so much, I might as well step aside. Taking out my phone, I sent this message to Skyler's parents with great difficulty.

"I'm calling off the wedding."

I watched as the restored paintings slowly turned to ash—piece by piece. Skyler was stunned by my actions. "What are you doing! These are your paintings!""Even if the paintings can be restored, our relationship can't be fixed. Honestly speaking, I think my current works are a hundred times better than these. "So why should I still keep them? I might as well burn them," I said indifferently.Skyler sounded tearful when he spoke. "What do I have to do for you to forgive me? Please tell me, Jules! I really don't know what I should do anymore…"In truth, I did feel a flicker of emotion deep down when I saw these paintings. However, I would never forget everything Skyler had done to me in the past. The pain he had inflicted on me had long since been rooted in my heart and had now grown into an impenetrable barrier around it. Thus, the closer he got, the more repulsed I became.I shook my head lightly. "It's no use, Skyler. Why did you do what you did back then if you knew it would

As expected, the figure was Skyler. It had been three years since I last saw him. The only thing I had heard after our fallout was that the art studio he once managed had shut down.Skyler's voice was raspy as he said, "Your current works are better than before, which is unsurprising, given that it's you.""Thank you," I simply said with a small smile.Surprisingly, I didn't have anything else I wanted to say to him now that we had met again. Perhaps I had finally stopped caring, or maybe too much time had passed.Skyler and I stood in silence for a long time before he suddenly spoke again."I came today because I wanted to give you something."Before I could respond, he took my arm and abruptly led me away to a dark space.I stood still, confused."Jules, I… I never understood what you truly wanted back then. I should've done everything I could to make it right after destroying your paintings instead of trying to force you to stay with me," Skyler said. Then, he turned on the

My situation quickly went viral online due to the plagiarism scandal and the lawsuit victory. Because of this, I gained a wave of attention. However, I never wanted to be famous, so I secluded myself and focused solely on painting.Everyone assumed I had quit for good, but fate had other plans. After months of dedicated training, I relearned how to paint on a large canvas and make color adjustments with the sliver of vision I still had. I was the artist I once was again, and it hadn't been as hard as I thought it would be.Despite my nearly blind state, I was able to rely on my memory of colors, my perception of shapes, and my passion for painting to keep creating—slowly and effortfully. Thus, I poured all of my energy into my craft as the seasons passed. The physical fatigue and mental pressure had been overwhelming. Most of the time, I would work until I could no longer lift a brush and my eyes could no longer see color. However, I never gave up.Fortunately, all those late nig

"You're cutting ties with me? Is that why you kicked me out of the studio a few days ago and started ignoring all my calls and messages? And for what? Just to win Julia back? What about me, Skyler?" Leah shrilly questioned.Skyler's expression turned gloomy upon seeing her. "What are you doing here?""I called her here," I immediately interjected. "I'm the one who told her you were here."I had secretly called Leah soon after discovering Skyler was my buyer, just so she could hear our conversation for herself. She was someone who had broken up our relationship, so I wanted her to know that she had eventually been betrayed, too.Skyler was stunned at first before he eventually nodded."I may as well make it clear to you since you're here, Leah. You knew I was with Julia from the very first day you came to the studio. All the misunderstandings between me and Julia started because of you. "So, from now on, let's not have anything to do with each other anymore. Okay?" he stated.Le

I had almost forgotten how wealthy Skyler's family was. Back then, he had given up on being the successor to his family's business and had chosen to struggle alongside me in the art studio. That was why I had agreed to marry him.Skyler pulled a dainty box from his pocket and opened it. Holding it out to me, he said, "When you threw away the engagement ring before, I searched for it for a long time but couldn't find it. "But it's okay—I immediately went out and bought a new one. Look, it's even prettier than the last one—"Then, as if suddenly thinking of something, Skyler took out his phone and swiped to a picture. Then, he showed it to me.I recognized it instantly. It was the wedding dress I had designed, although it had only been a rough sketch. I had always dreamed of the day I could wear it, but it was a shame that day would never come.Skyler sounded hopeful as he said, "I've placed a custom order based on your sketch, Jules. It's finished now—do you like it?"I was baffl

I continued receiving treatment at the hospital after cutting ties with Skyler. While a full recovery was likely impossible, I still felt any improvement was better than none. At the very least, I wanted to still be able to perceive all the colors of this world.During this time, I picked up my pencil and tried to draw again. The process was agonizing, and my eyes started to sting sharply if I drew for too long. Because of this, I tried closing my eyes and drawing based on the images in my mind.Surprisingly, the outcome wasn't too bad. Some parts were crooked and uneven, but it could also be a unique style in its own.Filled with excitement, I posted my work online. However, people weren't accepting of it and began belittling my drawing skills."God, what even is this? Can any random person be an artist now?""Is this one of Julia Grayson's works? Why does it look so poorly done? Has her account been hacked?""Hacked? No way. Her work was good in the past because she plagiarize

"Jules… Y-Your eye… It's actually injured?" Skyler stammered. His eyes were wide from shock, and he sounded nervous."That day, I thought you were also playing an April Fools' Day prank, just like Leah…" he continued.I stood there silently, facing him. Skyler was just a blurry figure in my eyes, but I could still make out the look of guilt on his face.Skyler didn't stop talking, perhaps out of shame."I'm truly sorry, Jules. I didn't know your eye was actually injured… I was just so angry that day—that's why I burned your paintings… I genuinely thought you could just repaint them," he explained.I wasn't sure when I had started to tear up, but my eyes had already turned red. I stared at the man I loved standing before me.Years ago, Skyler knew nothing about art. Yet, he had spent all his savings just to open an art studio for me. And now, he had destroyed all of my life's work without hesitation.Skyler had ruined my life over Leah's prank. And now, he stood here, apologizing

Skyler didn't visit me for several days after that. Leah, on the other hand, deliberately taunted me every day by sending photos of the two of them together. She even sent a few voice messages. "The art show Skyler organized for me was a success. It's such a shame you didn't get to see it in person, Julia. He even said he would set up an art studio for me—you don't mind, right?"Skyler had done all those things for me, but it turned out he could easily do them for another woman, too. The pain in my chest was suffocating—I couldn't believe any of this was real.I drifted off to sleep in a daze. In my semiconscious state, the sound of conversing voices came through the door. Two nurses were gossiping quietly in the patient room next door."Did you see today's trending news? The patient in Room 101 is a plagiarist. How shameless.""Isn't she a well-known artist? I never thought she'd do something like that."A sudden wave of dread washed over me upon hearing this. When I unlocked m
