Chapter 1

In the dimly lit private room, Carl Lester frowned in confusion.

He said, "Dad, how can you still not trust me? I've done a great job keeping everything a secret these past few years. That idiot never suspected a thing. Once Ms. Short wins the photography award, our family will finally be able to live a good life."

Sebastian Lester sighed cautiously and replied, "Don't let your guard down. The most important thing is for Jolene to win the award. When Jolene's work goes on display, we'll still need to use her to create media buzz.

"Netizens nowadays love playing moral police. With her as a contrast, Jolene becoming wildly famous is only a matter of time."

Carl nodded like he understood, but not completely. "Fine. I'll put up with her since she is still somewhat useful. Otherwise, I'd feel disgusted even calling her Mom. How can a former convict like her be worthy of being my mother? How is she worthy of being with you?"

I had always thought Carl was sensible and lovable. Now, he was viciously mocking me with unbelievably cruel words.

My mind went blank. I couldn't believe any of this was real.

Five years ago, I treated a patient suffering from an eye disease. She was a well-known photographer.

After hearing that I had a way to ease her pain, she came to me for help.

But during her final treatment, the eye drops had been switched with industrial cleaner. Her eyeballs became damaged, and she went completely blind. Unable to accept the blow, she jumped from the 20th floor.

After the hospital investigated, the only thing they found on the bottle was my fingerprint. No matter how I defended myself, it was useless. I was sentenced to five years in prison.

By the time I was released, the Medical Alliance had expelled me. Feeling disgraced, my family had cut all ties with me and had driven me out.

Everyone treated me like trash. The photographer's fans publicly condemned me everywhere. Even beggars on the street knew I was a murderer.

Just when I was drowning in despair and ready to swallow a handful of pills to kill myself, Sebastian and Carl found me in the nick of time.

He held my hand tightly and said sincerely, "Pamela, I believe you. You're a kind person. You would never do something like that."

Ignoring the objections of his family elders, he brought me home.

The two of them had been like a beam of sunlight that illuminated my dark world. I regained the hope to keep living and willingly devoted myself to taking care of them.

But I never expected that all those years I wrongfully suffered in silence had only been to help Jolene gain fame and praise.

Tears silently slid from my eyes as I dragged my heavy steps away from the private room. The salvation I once believed in had actually been a carefully planned trap from the very beginning.

In a daze, I returned home, wanting to find more evidence of the conspiracy between Sebastian and Carl. I went into Sebastian's study and yanked open the drawers. Then, I started searching frantically.

In the bottom drawer, I found a thick stack of letters carefully stored away. Every single one was a love letter Sebastian had written to Jolene. There were 99 of them in total. Inside the final pink envelope was a diamond ring he had treasured for years.

He poured all his love into those letters. Each and every word was filled with deep affection.

To everyone else, Sebastian was a man of few words. After so many years of marriage, I had never once heard a single confession of love from him.

It turned out he wasn't incapable of saying such things. He had simply saved them all for another woman.

I closed my eyes in bitter disbelief and gathered up all the letters wordlessly.

Five years ago, Jolene had only been an up-and-coming photographer. She had been constantly overshadowed by my patient. So, she lacked the chance to become famous.

So, Sebastian and Carl had switched the eye drops. Jolene lost her strongest competitor and transformed into an internationally renowned photographer overnight.

Meanwhile, I became the murderer everyone hated and scorned.

How ironic.

Gridano was only about a 30-hour flight from Jasvale. While Sebastian and Jolene were still at each other's necks, I had already settled down nicely in Gridano. With my excellent cooking skills, the local children quickly grew fond of me. They frequently gathered around me, calling me "Ms. Coleman" in their sweet voices. And thanks to my outstanding surgical abilities, I became a doctor for Doctors Without Borders. I treated many patients, and they often brought gifts to my doorstep to thank me.I politely refused them all and was just about to go into my house when I suddenly heard footsteps approaching.Reflexively, I said, "I'm sorry, but I don't accept gifts…"To my surprise, it was Sebastian and Carl. It felt as if a century had passed since the last time we met, but in reality, it had only been three years. Sebastian looked as though he had aged ten years. His body was gaunt and thin, and he no longer looked handsome at all. Carl was also pale and skinny—he clearly lacked

When Sebastian returned home in a daze, Carl immediately rushed over to hug him.As Jolene supported his staggering frame, Carl flashed her a sweet smile. He said, "Ms. Short, can I call you Mommy from now on? I've driven away that evil woman! The three of us can stay together forever now!"Thinking about how miserably I had left, Jolene grinned smugly. "That idiot is finally gone. No one can stand between our happiness anymore, Seb."The next second, Sebastian suddenly slapped her across the face. "You drove Pamela away! If it hadn't been for you telling Carl to switch the eye drops, how could I have let Pamela go to prison? This is all your fault! If it weren't for you, she would never have left me!"Jolene covered her swollen face and fell to her knees, unable to believe what Sebastian had just done.Seeing this, Carl shoved Sebastian hard. "Dad, what are you doing? This is Ms. Short, not that evil woman!"Looking at Sebastian's furious and bloodshot eyes, Jolene smiled mock

No one realized that I had already left until Sebastian's assistant, Derek Fisher, came over to deliver a dress for Jolene. He was the first to notice something was wrong.Everything that belonged to me in the room had disappeared. The entire room was empty, as if I had never lived there at all.Upon seeing this, Derek immediately panicked and called Sebastian. "Mr. Lester, something's wrong! Please come back quickly!"Sebastian thought something had happened to Jolene, so he rushed back without another word. But when he arrived, he found Jolene sleeping soundly while holding Carl in her arms.Jolene woke up from the commotion and pouted in complaint. "What's going on? What happened?"Sebastian frowned at Derek. "What exactly is the matter?""Mrs. Lester is missing!" Derek replied.Hearing that, Sebastian seemed to visibly relax. "I thought it was something serious… She is perfectly capable of going out herself. What could possibly…"Before he finished speaking, he realized th

When I opened my eyes again, I was still in the restroom. No one had come to help me. I could only endure the pain radiating throughout my body. I forced myself to stand as I staggered back home. The moment I pushed open the door, I saw Carl using a pair of scissors to cut apart our family photo. He shredded the part with me into pieces. With vicious ferocity, he stabbed at my face in the picture. "Go die! Just die already! Only when you're dead can Ms. Short become my mommy!" he hissed. When he saw that I was back, he made a face at me. Then, he snorted coldly and left.At that moment, I no longer had the strength to stop him. I only wanted to get my passport and leave as quickly as possible.During the five years I spent in prison, my health had deteriorated badly. My blood-clotting disorder made it difficult for wounds to heal. Now, my entire face was a bloody mess.Making my way to the bedroom was an arduous task. As I reached the door, my ears picked up on Jolene's soft an

By the time I arrived, the award ceremony was just about to begin. The moment I walked into the hall, I saw Sebastian arm in arm with Jolene, toasting the guests.Everyone praised them for being a match made in heaven.I also saw my father, Maurice Coleman. He took Jolene as his goddaughter in front of the media. Even from far away, I could see the affectionate fatherly look in his eyes when he looked at her.He publicly announced, "I will transfer 30 percent of my shares to Jolene as her wedding gift for marrying Sebastian."A shy smile appeared on Jolene's face as she buried her face in Sebastian's arms. The moment I walked up to them, Dad frowned and asked me harshly, "Why are you here? Is this the kind of place you should be showing up at? You may not care about yourself, but I still care about my reputation!"You're a murderer! If I were you, I would've hidden in some dark corner and not shown myself. If you know what's good for you, hurry up and divorce Sebastian so Jolene

Late at night, Sebastian and Carl returned home.As usual, Carl wrapped his arms around mine and acted spoiled. "Mom, I missed you so much today, like I always do."Sebastian pulled out a bouquet of roses from his arms. "I got you pink Jumilia roses today."Looking into their affectionate eyes, I felt a chill run down my spine. Why was I incapable of acting as naturally as they did?The smile on my lips almost failed to hold. "It's getting late. You should go to sleep."Carl chimed in, "Yeah! We still have to attend the award ceremony tomorrow. I'm so excited!"He couldn't hide the excitement in his voice. Worried that he might reveal something, Sebastian shot me a cautious glance. I pretended not to understand and got up to walk toward the bedroom.Fresh flowers filled the vase by the bedside every single day. Sebastian remembered that roses were my favorite, so he always bought me different varieties. Now, every sweet memory had been brutally shattered by the ugly truth.M
