The first thing Dante said when I sat down was, “You look like you are deciding whether to forgive me or stab me with the fork.”

I picked up my napkin and laid it across my lap. “If I were going to stab you, I would not warn you with my expression.”

“That is disappointing,” he said. “I like honesty.”

“Then you picked the wrong night,” I replied.

The restaurant was private in the way only Dante’s world understood privacy—no other diners. No staff hovered close enough to overhear. Candlelight reflected off crystal glasses and polished wood. It should have felt romantic. Instead, it felt like a negotiation wrapped in linen and wine.

He lifted his glass. “You came.”

“I did not say this was a date,” I said.

He took a slow sip as he watched me over the rim. “You did not cancel.”

“I wanted answers,” I said. “Not ambience.”

The corner of his mouth curved slightly. “You always want answers.”

“And you always avoid them.”

“That is not true,” he said calmly. “I choose timing.”

The promise in his voice, a dark rumble against the shell of my ear, was a jolt straight to my core. But he didn’t push forward. Not yet. His hands, slicked with my own release, slid from my hips to my ass as he kneaded the plump flesh through the torn lace.“This,” he growled, his voice thick with lust. “This fucking ass, Isidora. It’s been begging for my attention all night.”Before I could form a reply, his hand came down. Hard.SMACK!The sound cracked through the room, sharp and shocking. A burst of heat blossomed across my right cheek, followed by a sharp sting that melted almost instantly into a deep, throbbing warmth. I gasped as my fingers scrabbled against the wood of the door.“Dante!”“It’s too fucking perfect,” he snarled, his hand connected again on the same spot. SMACK! “Too goddamn round and soft and mine.” His other hand landed on my left cheek. SMACK!Each impact sent a jolt through me. The sting was bright and immediate, but it’s the heat that followed, as it spread

My back hit the bedroom door with a soft thud as Dante’s mouth claimed mine again when we entered the bedroom. There was no gentle lead-up, no sweet prelude. Just the hard, possessive crush of his lips and the slick, hungry slide of his tongue against mine. The taste of him—expensive whiskey and dangerous intent—flooded my senses. I moaned into his mouth, my hands fisted in the black silk of his shirt. He broke the kiss just long enough to growl, “I’ve been thinking about fucking you like this all goddamn day, Isidora,” before his mouth was on my neck, his teeth scraped the sensitive skin where my pulse hammered.A shiver, hot and liquid, shot straight down my spine to pool between my legs. “Yeah?” I breathed and arched into him. I felt the rigid line of his erection press against my stomach through our clothes. “What exactly were you thinking, Dante? Tell me.”He pulled back, his dark eyes burned with a fire that had nothing to do with affection and everything to do with raw, unfilte

I found Dante in darkness with a glass of whiskey he was not drinking. “Will you finish that,” I said, as I shut the door, “or simply stare it down to submission?”He did not turn. The city shone beyond the windows. Cars ran like veins of light. Life continued as if nothing had broken.“You should be asleep,” he said.“So should you.”“That was not an invitation.”“Neither was this,” I replied. “Yet here we are.”He finally turned. His expression was unreadable, which was worse than anger. But at least anger meant he was still there.“You definitely should not have come looking for me,” he said.“You disappeared in your own house.”“I had to be alone.”“Quietness is no service to you,” I said. “You need control.”His jaw tightened. “Be careful.”He gave a slow breath and put the glass down slowly and leisurely. “You are tired.”“So are you.”“I am not the one unraveling.”“That’s where you are wrong,” I said. “You just do it privately.”Silence fell. Not comfortable. Not peaceful. It

Luca’s voice was hoarse and stripped to a raw I’d never heard from him. “I am already here,” I said. “So you can either communicate with me or pass me off as furniture.” He stood with his back to me, hands braced on the edge of the table like it was the only thing keeping him upright. The room reeked of antiseptic and metal, something darker down below. It stuck to the walls no matter how much anyone attempted to scrub it away. “She never meant to betray him,” Luca said softly. I did not answer right away. I had understood that silence in this house was never vacant. It demanded. “She just wanted out,” he said again. “Matteo told her that if she told him the routes, she would be free. New papers. New life. No longer looking over her shoulder.” I swallowed. “And you believed that.” “I believed her,” he said, snapping and finally pivoting toward me. He was red-rimmed, wild in a way that made him feel simultaneously younger and far older. “I thought by loving her, I would be able t

The first explosion rattled the windows sufficiently to wake me. I lay in bed, my heart pounding with excitement, the echo of the blast continuing to rattle the night like thunder with purpose. One second later, my phone was on, its screen glowing with message after message from different numbers, all the same thing.Fire. Romano property. Multiple locations.I swung my legs off the bed before my brain caught up with my body. I stood, and I saw the third explosion growing, in the distance, a dull orange glare on clouds outside the window. The city never really slept, but this was different. This was a scream to be heard.I did not bother changing appropriately. Shoes. Jacket. Phone in my hand. I was already moving.By the time the car pulled into view on the waterfront, smell hit first. Thick, oily smoke trickled into the air like a living thing. Sirens shrieked far enough to be in vain. Flames roamed the sides of a warehouse that I immediately remembered. One of Dante’s. One he h
