Chapter 2

Author: Anonymous
After spending a month in the hospital, Chloe was finally discharged and brought home.

“Where is Lillian? Did she drop dead outside and decide never to come back?” The moment my mother stepped through the front door, she saw a thick layer of dust coating the floor and cabinets. Spotting the moldy food inside the refrigerator, she flew into a rage. “Her endless little tantrums are really getting out of hand!”

It was deeply ironic. During Chloe’s month-long hospital stay, both of my parents had remained by her bedside every single day.

Not once had they stopped to think about how I was supposed to survive all alone without a single cent.

Seeing that the house was in disarray was the only thing that triggered their memory of my existence. Yet my mother’s very first words were not out of concern for where I had gone, but to criticize me for being unreasonable.

I had long since grown cold and numb toward them. Their slander and misunderstandings no longer stirred even a ripple of emotion inside me.

Chloe, seemingly intent on fanning the flames even further, adopted a pitiful expression.

“It’s all my fault,” Chloe said softly. “I’ll call Lillian right now to apologize and beg her to come back. If she’s still unwilling, I’ll go out and look for her. I’ll drop to my knees and beg her to come home.”

It was always like this. Whenever Chloe put on a show of play-acting the victim, my mother’s heart would break for her. A mere few words from Chloe were all it took to shift all blame onto me—and I was always the scapegoat.

Since childhood, the endless grievances I had suffered because of Chloe were too numerous to count.

Sure enough, my mother ground her teeth in disgust.

“Does she think she’s worthy of your apology?” my mother snapped. “It was just a simple blood transfusion! It wasn’t going to kill her, yet she insists on being so dramatic! If she doesn’t want to come back, then she might as well drop dead outside!”

Chloe refused to let the matter rest and proceeded to dial my phone number anyway.

Despite her harsh words, my mother strained her ears to listen to the phone, looking completely ready to launch into a barrage of verbal abuse the moment I answered.

Because my phone had been powered off the entire time, Chloe sent a voice message on our family group chat instead.

“Lillian, everything is my fault. Please don’t blame Mom and Dad. Whatever it is, let’s talk about it at home. You can hit me or yell at me all you want, and I won’t complain at all.”

Chloe spoke with such deep sincerity that had I not known her true face, I might have been moved.

After waiting for a long time without any reply from me, my mother grew impatient.

“Chloe has already apologized like this, yet that ungrateful wretch still refuses to appreciate it!” my mother fumed. “She doesn’t deserve to be my daughter!”

With that, my mother removed me from the family group chat.

Had this happened in the past, my mother’s action would have devastated me.

Even though every single message sent in that four-person group chat revolved around Chloe, I had never brought myself to leave it.

I had deluded myself into believing that as long as I remained in that group chat, I was still part of this family.

I was like a thief peeking into their warm, happy life—even though there had never been a place for me in their world.

“Mom, don’t be angry,” Chloe purred, having achieved her goal. A triumphant smirk flickered across her lips before she sweetly snuggled into my mother’s arms. “You don’t just have Lillian. You still have me.”

My mother affectionately stroked Chloe’s hair. “You’re the good child after all. I wish I had never given birth to that ungrateful wretch!”

I let out a bitter smile.

Ever since I was little, my mother had repeated that exact same sentence over and over.

“I wish I had never given birth to you!”

I wanted so badly to tell her that I had never been given the power to choose my birth. If I’d known my life would turn out like this, I’d rather have been born a stray dog than into a family like mine.

She had given me life, and to save her precious younger daughter, I had paid that life back to her. We were even now.

My father emerged from the kitchen with a broad smile on his face, carrying a lavish spread of delicious dishes to invite my mother and Chloe to dinner.

Although my mother was a career woman who never cooked, I had never tasted a meal prepared by my father either.

Whenever it was just my father and me alone at home, he would always tell me to go eat some plain bread. Yet whenever Chloe was around, he would enthusiastically dash into the kitchen to prepare a meal for her.

I used to believe that my father was simply clumsy and didn’t know how to express love to his children. Only later did I realize that it wasn’t that he didn’t know how to love—he just didn’t love me.

“Chloe’s only just recovered,” my father said with a scoff, looking at her with unmistakable affection. “Don’t bring that curse up again. I wish she had even half of Chloe’s sense.”

I knew my father despised me. He simply wanted to bury the fact that he was the one who had caused my mother’s premature labor all those years ago.

Watching the three of them sit together so joyfully over dinner was painfully jarring.

For the very first time, I felt an overwhelming urge to leave this home forever.

In the middle of the flames, my mother looked at my floating soul and slowly reached out her hand, wanting to touch my face. But I took a step back.My mother closed her eyes, two lines of clear tears falling down her cheeks.“Go on, Lillian,” she whispered. “I hope you’re reborn into a family that loves you. I failed you in this life. Please... don’t choose me as your mother in the next.”As she spoke, tongues of fire licked across her body.If I wasn’t mistaken, my mother hadn’t looked surprised at all when she saw me. It was as if she had been able to see my spirit all along.I was just a ghost, completely unbothered by the fire. I stood there and watched with my own eyes as the home I had lived in for over ten years slowly burned to ashes. My father’s screams started off loud and powerful, turned raspy, and finally faded into complete silence.Through it all, my mother didn’t make a single sound.I should have felt a flood of mixed emotions, yet my heart remained entirely ca

The victim’s family refused to accept any money. They insisted on taking the case to court and sending Chloe to prison. My mother acted as Chloe’s defense lawyer.Watching this, I felt only irony. My mother stood in this courtroom twice for her daughters. The first time was to force me to my death to save Chloe. The second time was to save Chloe yet again.Members of the jury looked at my mother and Chloe with cold, disgust-filled eyes.My mother pulled her suit coat tighter around herself, trying to hide behind her professional outfit. But she was only fooling herself.Just as my mother got into her zone and tried to deliver a speech, someone in the jury scoffed loudly.“Why even try to protect a monster like that? Like mother, like daughter. If I remember correctly, isn’t she that lawyer from the viral video?”“A woman like her doesn’t deserve to be a mother. If I were her dead eldest daughter, I’d want the younger sister dead too!”The speech my mother had prepared caught i

My parents were summoned to the school while the injured girl was rushed to the hospital for emergency treatment. Chloe, on the other hand, stood to one side with a defiant expression. When Principal Maxwell Hayes explained the sequence of events, my mother stared at Chloe in utter disbelief.“You’re someone who is usually scared to death of stepping on an ant! How could you harm someone like this?”My parents couldn’t bring themselves to believe it, but I did. When I was little, I had personally witnessed Chloe abusing small animals on multiple occasions.I had told my mother back then, but she had refused to believe me, even claiming that I was making up tales about Chloe just to compete for affection. She had even declared that Chloe was the kindest, soft-hearted child she had ever met.I knew my mother would never take my word for it.Yet Chloe was simply born with pure malice.A year ago, Chloe had nearly killed me by accident. While our parents were away on a trip, Chlo

I found it laughable listening to her.Since when was I so powerful in Chloe’s eyes?Ever since I was born, my parents’ eyes had been glued to her. When had they ever lingered on me?When Chloe cried as a child, my mother would beat me, claiming I had made too much noise and frightened her. When Chloe failed an exam while I earned a perfect score, my mother delivered another slap across my face. She accused me of harboring ulterior motives—saying that instead of tutoring Chloe, I had chosen to show off in front of them just to humiliate her.Even when I fell ill and brought my medical diagnosis to my mother, she kicked me hard in the lower abdomen. She glared at me viciously. “Chloe is sick right now, and you’re actually fabricating a lie like this just to compete for attention? Lillian, how can you not have a single shred of conscience?”Every expectation I had ever harbored for this family had vanished piece by piece amidst their distrust and cold indifference.Inequality cu

My father numbly transferred money to the nurse to cover the cost of the broken phone, moving like a walking corpse.“Dad, don’t be like this,” Chloe whined nearby. “Lillian was so disrespectful to Mom and even fought her in court. A daughter like that doesn’t deserve to be mourned.”Overhearing Chloe badmouthing me behind her back, my mother turned around, marched over, and delivered a ringing slap across Chloe’s face.“I won’t allow you to speak about your sister like that!”Chloe was stunned by the slap. She had likely assumed that because our parents hated me to the bone, insulting me would earn her attention. She had never expected it to ignite my mother’s fury instead.Fortunately for Chloe, she reacted quickly. She slapped herself hard several times in succession, muttering repeatedly through her tears, “It’s my fault! I shouldn’t have been the cause of Lillian’s death! I’m the one who should die!”Seeing Chloe like this, the cold hardness on my mother’s face softened slig

Chloe had been back home for half a month already. It seemed that after my parents mentioned me once on the day they returned, they completely forgot about my existence and never brought me up again.Early in the morning, my parents took Chloe to the hospital for a follow-up examination.Chloe’s attending physician reviewed her lab results and confirmed there were no issues. Just as my family was about to leave, they noticed a few nurses gathered around watching a video on a phone.“How can a woman be so inhumane? She actually dragged her own biological daughter to court!”“She’s a lawyer, too! Highly educated, yet playing favorites like this and driving her own daughter to her death.”My mother froze in her tracks when she heard the familiar voice emanating from the video. The video showed my mother passionately recounting my supposed offenses and presenting her legal arguments during our court trial, insisting that I undergo the blood transfusion.I had remained silent through
